Great video. Thanks for the details on how you pick them. You are one of the most knowledgeable person on breeding and fish keeping in the world. 🌎. Thanks.

Thank you. Well, I've probably made every mistake one can make in raising fish, so I've mostly learned what not to do. Charles

We raise pure species as well as hybrids. Both are interesting and offer different issues. With pure species, we try to maintain the fish as we got it. Sometimes, however, some interesting variations arise, such as our Protomelas taeniolatus 'Sunset' line. See this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qer1IYKaizg.html With hybrids, I feel free to select and create new colors and patterns. The important thing is to properly identify hybrids and to carefully maintain pure species. Charles

If you go back in his videolist, there are some videos on his setup. Also Cory from co op aquarium has made one, some years ago. Thats how I got to learn about Goliad Farms. But here is one of Charles own videos 😊 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-stuCiMWZZPE.htmlsi=xSMhDr1kuaIl49dU

Here's a link to an early video discussing our filtration system: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c4lrt1y5z_A.html It is, however, probably time to make a new video. I'll put it in the queue to be done. Charles

I saw some in your sump fish video that were beautiful. Couldn't you select some of them and select breed them?
@goliadfarms7029
@goliadfarms7029 20 дней назад
We have used some of them. Our Dolphin Cichlid strains are descended from one male I caught from Greenhouse 1's sump. Our current Convict Cichlids lines (to be featured soon to show our selection for color) descend from fish that survived the Texas Winter Storm in the floor gutters. Charles

I would appreciate it if, perhaps in another video, you would talk about how you feed your fish. I think I remember pellets for the adults, but what about the fry? Do they get dry food in the fry cages? Or do they risk all to venture down to the mulm to hunt water bugs? Wouldn't many fry starve? Or get eaten by the swords, who would surely go after small fry if they could? Do you ever reconsider inputs versus results, or is your system so efficient you're content with what your vats produce? Just very curious! Thanks for all the videos, which I absolutely love. I'm amazed by how easily you handle your fish! A sort of Zen mastery... 🙂

We'll do a feeding video during which I'll discuss feeding strategies. Each vat gets the proper mix depending on size of the five dry foods we feed. The fry cages receive food. Also, there are for the tiniest fry plenty of Paramecium and juvenile scuds in the vats. None of the fry starve. I'm sure there is some predation by swords, platies, and even the cichlids, but each vat is loaded with feeder guppies to satiate the fish-eating urges of the larger fish. We constantly analyze our results. I maintain a detailed file in our database on yields, containing any parameters that I think might impact yields. Charles

@@billgarner9352 One problem with a feeding video is that Susie (wife, business partner, now videographer, etc.) is convinced that I dramatically overfeed (she's only concerned about the cost). Having her video feeding is will just confirm her fears. Oh well... Charles

@@goliadfarms7029 I admit, I'm laughing! It makes sense that your huge system can manage lots of food, whereas I'm careful that everything is eaten in my little aquariums. Knowing you use 5 types of dry food satisfies me (for now, lol)... Thanks, Charles.

@@billgarner9352 For some more detail, we buy Cargill and Purina fish diets in bulk in 50 and 55-pound bags. These are full diets for fish and average around $0.11/ounce. When I had aquariums, I fed the fish every time I walked by but only what they ate immediately. We used to feed our hatchery fish three times a day, then dropped that to twice. Now, we feed only once day in the evening. The fish do just as well with that single feeding. Of course, there are scuds, Paramecium, feeder guppies, etc. in the system for them too. Susie still complains about how much I feed, but the fishies tell me they are hungry! Charles

So did that young camera shy lady move on to drier pastures or just hides better? That amazing male and the dark female should make amazing fry! Do you feel better at dealing with a winter storm or will it still be a disaster?

That was Kate. She tries to dodge the camera, but I manage to get some footage of her. Kate and Sklyar started working with us in April and have rapidly learned our fish rearing techniques. I have high hopes for the next generation of this Peacock strain. We are working on hardening our systems. We have a major infrastructure improvement project that will start in a couple of weeks once hurricane season is over. Charles
