We had a German Shepherd called Herman when I was younger and I remember one time when we were at the beach my sister who had not long learnt to walk, had made her way down to the shoreline(mum was watching her) and after walking just a little bit into the water our Shepard had bolted over to her and picked her up by the back of her nappy and carried her back to mum 😂 Miss that dog every day

Of course he protects her. She's part of the family now. 🙌

I’m an old codger and have raised and owned GS my entire life. They are natural protectors (especially females) of anything. They will defend anything that’s being threatened. They were bred from shepherding stock ,which were charged with protecting sheep. Their natural instinct is to protect. I know your baby will be safe with her watching over it. I have a gsd that was introduced to the grandkids at a very early age. She is was brilliant with them they used to sleep next to her on her bed. She adores the pair of them and wants to be with them all the time when here.

My family had a female German shepherd, Princess, as our family dog for years. When she had her first litter of pups and we gave them away, she transferred all of that maternal love and protectiveness to me, my brother, and my two sisters. We became her puppies. There were a few times when we had to hold her back to prevent her going after a stranger when someone passed too close to us for her comfort. She was VERY protective, and she stayed that way her whole life. So when your baby gets a few years on her, you'll have to be careful about introducing your kid's friends to your dog, especially if there's any horseplay or roughhousing that could go on. But introduced properly, your dog can adopt the friends into her "pack" and will be protective of them, too (but her immediate family comes first, of course).

There are comments calling this irresponsible because the dog is too close to the baby. The parents are there. Dogs can gentle with babies. The baby won't die. What they're doing is letting the dog see the baby and the parents want Lucy to know what's going on. Give the dog the benefit of doubt. She knows when to be gentle. I don't have a dog, but Lucy will be great around the baby and can't wait for the child to grow up and be her playmate. Lucy isn't dumb.
