As a german carpenter I can tell you that this hammer is called "Latthammer" here, which means joist hammer. The advantage of that one longer spike is that you can easily disassemble nailed crossing joists from roof beams. Just put the short spike on the beam, the long one underneath the joist and lever it apart! Hoch die Zimmererkunst!

TheSphat As an English carpenter, I would use the right tool for the job if I was levering timbers apart: a bar. I've got to say, American hand tools can't be beaten for design and quality

It's a roofing hammer in the UK, spike is for punching nail hole in a slate tile.

I would say that the paint on the hammer is to help prevent rust in places that are dificult to acess

I can imagine the slating/carpenters hammer confusion is that, traditionally, there may been more overlap between the two. I can't see them being used as a brick hammer as most of them have a "chisel" edge, stonewalling maybe; I ended up using an cheap old roofing hammer (not claw) to rake out joints for repointing.

At a regular hardware store or where particularly? I was there and France and was at a big box store(in France) and it wasn’t that great. I was on the hunt for what it seems you found. It was a random stop on the way to the beaches of Normandy

The comments here are hilarious. From what I can gather, the point is there likely originally from slating roofs and siding, to punch holes in the slates. Whatever else it's useful for, or why else anyone uses it, I think if you could look back through it's development, that is likely the story. I've slated an entire roof with one and the only significant thing it is missing over some slating hammers is a sharp, knifelike shank edge that can cut slates against a stake or other straight edge. It seems likely that someone just developed a better all around carpenters hammer that could still be used for repairing and installing slates and this is the result. Regardless, pretty neat and the extra leverage of a long and very strong point is pretty cool, as is being able to use it as what is called a pickaroon in the states, for handling logs and lumber. I have the Freund, which is super similar to this, maybe even the same under a different brand, or one is a copy of the other.

Wiha has an Electrician Hammer now, I'm curious to see that also, looks well built. Since I only do roofing I use a AJC Mag-Hatchet Magnetic Face Roofing Hammer, it's not cheap but works very well and the nail puller is located under the magnetic head. Very good design (USA made).

That hammer isn't a carpenters hammer in our country (the Netherlands) It's used by bricklayers and mostly by scaffolders.

It's definitely a carpenters hammer here in germany. here the bricklayers hammer has something like a shovel end instead of the claw end.

I wouldn't use a 'lathamer' for fine carpentry, but for the more coarse stuff like timber framing they are the bomb. Bricklayers use a hammer that is much more like a 'straathamer'. Also the spike end is super useful for moving large lumber around. So yeah, great for building a shed, not for making fine furniture. I do a fair bit of carpentry and while a lathamer is my default hammer, I do have a proper mallet for chisel work, and a bunch of other more specialised hammers. It's not like a latthammer couldn't do those things, it just doesn't do them as good as the proper hammer for the job.

This is typical hammer used by concrete workers and unfortunately it have one minus. When you join PERI or DOKA panels you have to put on oil to prevent concrete from sticking to plywood. When you get this oil on handle this hammer becomes really slipery. Texture on the handle would help a lot.

I've been pounding nails professionally for over 40 years now and really don't like steel handles. Wood absorbs some of the vibration that gets transmitted to your hand.. Much better for lots of nailing. Right now I'm doing a shear wall that the nailing schedule is 4" on edges and 8" in the field. Thats when the difference between a steel handle and wood soon becomes apparent. I think the slight flex in wood also delivers more power. Kind of like a golf club shaft. I love your reviews but you could not give me a steel handled hammer!

I thought it was a roofing hammer..The spike used for punching nail holes in. metal roofing..Thats what it said on the packaging on a hammer with a identical design of head,but a fibreglass handle,that was in sale here at ALDI...Down here we dont nail metal roofing sheets on anymore,they must be screwed down (Aust.Standards) and we use cordless drills with hex head self drilling roofing screws..have done so for last twenty years...many houses down here have Colorbond (tm) coloured painted corrugated steel roofing...As far as claw hammers go..,they are rapidly losing ground to nail guns and self drilling screws..The best Claw hammer is the Australian Designed one called Redback

Does anybody actually put on safety glasses on outside RU-vid when hammering? I have never seen a carpenter putting on safety glasses before they start hammering. I have never heard of anyone getting an eye damaged from hammering either. How often does this happen and what is it that typically flies in their eye then?
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 8 лет назад
Depends on the job really, I have glasses with polycarbonate lens so they are ok for most jobs. But if I'm doing anything with power saws, lathes, etc, I would usually get out the real safety glasses. For a hammer it is possible for a piece of the head to fly off, however this is usually because the hammer is being used for something it was not designed.

ITubeTooInc have something fly in your eye just once and it'll change your view on the glasses thing,. agree many don't wear them myself included until I had the tiniest sliver fly in my eye and end up not just under my eye lid but in-between the two folds of the eye lid .talk about fun...smh.. safety glasses,never leave home without um.. :-)

No. Woke up in the middle of the night with a burning in my eye and a feeling like there was a bump on it. I could feel it under the lid. Went to the hospital. Piece of steel from the screw pierced my pupil. Had it taken out with a pin. Left a rust ring and gave me pink eye. Glasses...

I can see why they would not sell for long in the US. Some person would end up swinging too hard, impale themselves with the extended spike on the hammer, and some greedy lawyer/corrupt judge would award millions for the impaled person to sue the company.

american carpenter here but you guys are stilling using hammers? really? cordless nail gun anyone? cordless impact gun and torx screws are starting to gain popularity for framing around me. even hangers and brackets are screwed now. nailing is getting rare for me, generally only for trim/finish work which is where cordless nail guns rock. my nail set is spring loaded so im trying to remember the last time ive used one of my many old dusty hammers, i think it was like so ten years ago. ohh wait they are still good for demo but you dont really want a new or good one for that.

I’ve worked in all phases of carpentry for 20 years and this hammer lol has a magnetic nail holder. 1st off, it would be a rare occasion that a framer would use it to set and drive a nail in high places. This is also no innovation as the curved claw hammer can hold a nail in the claw to set and drive but who uses curved claws for all day framing? Straight claws are better in that after framing a wall laying on the slab you can swing the claw into a plate when it needs to be lifted up. as I said I’ve never had to do put fix a nail in a hammer claw except to impress a new guy once starting in the trade. It’s also stupid to think this hammer with a waffle head is a good idea to use for any finish work when the waffle would leave waffle marks exposed on the finish. Secondly, steel handle hammers do not come close to absorbing the shock that wood or fiberglass handles do hence if all you do is fast and furious framing work all day then at the end of the day you’ll be worn out as your arm would absorb all this shock. Don’t get me wrong I buy and use German tools myself rather than the adulterated globalist corporate crap that use to be well made leading brands until around the 80s. There’s very few old school union trained framers left if any more who worked by the piece not by the hour who could set a nail with 1 swing and drive it home on the 2nd swing. That means when track homes were growing like weeds the faster and harder one worked the more money you made for conventional framing before trusses were rolling. Waffle heads are not suppose to be used for nailing wood decking unless you’re Goober Pyle wanting to impress the big boys lol. I can’t think of any advantageous use for this hammer except maybe mounting it on the wall of one’s living room as a conversational piece or some goober wanna be mounting it on the hood of his hillbilly truck.
