Ahh it feels so good to be back uploading! Seriously doing RU-vid makes me the happiest person in the world 💖 Anyways I hope you all have enjoyed the video! The north american measurement got messed up in cm's it's supposed to be 76cm by 38cm.
I am from Germany and I do own a hamster and I can 100% say that everything that has been said in this video is true. And I hope that other countries change their care for hamsters. BUT I've to say that in pet stores in Germany they do sell cages that are way too small.
Actually the care for ALL animals has a much higher standard here, since we have strict rules against animal cruelty/abusing. But still not everyone sees it in the same way and still puts their Hamster/Mouse/Rat/etc in too small cages. My Hamster and Guinea Pigs came out of this type of "care" and I'm really happy to give them a happier life now!
@lena/anyone is there a link to pet care guides/articles. I’m having a hard time finding them. I can read German so any links would be appreciated!!! (For any animal care)
@@iananstaett6235 'diebrain.de' for basically any animals and 'kaninchenwiese.de' for bunnys and guinea pigs. These two are the best ones i know, cause they do know what they're talking about and put so much effort in there. Have a nice day!
This is true also in nordic countries, northern europe. Pet care in UK and north america is weirdly outdated for us. What baffles me the most is all the plastic and especially the transparent plastic hides. We do not have paper bedding of rainbow colour beddings, we use natural beddings.
I love the care in Germany but it’s so sad that some people have such low standards and think it’s ok too keep there hamsters in such small cages. I think this video will help lots of people to realise the proper care they need❤️🐹🐹🐹❤️💓
i adopted a robo hamster a couple of weeks ago now. i live in the UK and the pets at home worker was mentioning that their fur can get especially greasy to which i mentioned sand baths, and the worker told me that the hamster would ignore a sand bath as it wouldn’t not know what to do with it. i almost couldn’t believe my ears! as expected the first thing that my new hamster did was dive into her sand bath. it concerns me how little pet store workers seem to know about hamster care..
Sadly, most pet store personnel are only tought to sell products, the animals would also count as a product. Even a random (hamster spieces) wikipedia page has better info than you would usually get from a pet store owner or the staff.
To be fair, some hamsters do ignore sand baths. I've got 5 robos, only 4/5 bathe lol. And yes, Pets at Home are truly terrible. Never giving them money again.
@@CelesticCF some hamsters choose to bath when noones looking, mine was like this for first few months and for short time after he recovered from mini eye surgery. Same goes for wheel, my fella loves to run when no one is around ;)
I´m from germany and I can confirm all of this xD ^^ Also the employes at the store I got my hamster were very informated and cared for the well beeing of the animals ^^ Their informations were the same I got when doing more research. And when we recently had this heatwave they didn´d sell any animals because the heat added with stress and a ride in a car would have been very dangerous for all rodents.
0:34 CAGE SIZE 1:15 BEDDING 2:12 SAND BATHS 2:35 WHEELS 3:30 TOYS/ ACCESSORIES 5:09 DIET Hope I helped! ☺️ But I do recommend watching the whole video, Victoria has great helpful facts! ❤️ - AnimalChannel101 (a small RU-vidr!) lots of love 💕
Frankly, if the pet stores in America sold suitably sized cages, and didn't sell the very tiny cages, most Americans buying hamsters would buy a proper cage. As it is it doesn't take long for many to realize the very tiny cages aren't large enough and research online either buying a 40 gallon breeder aquarium or the largest clear bin in stock at the nearest store that sells bins. Pet stores be damned! I have a 50 gallon/200 quart bin for the main habitat, and a 38 quart bin as the travel bin. the 38 quart bin is as large as most, not quite all, of the tiny cages pet stores sell, not much larger than a shoe box. The 200 quart bin is above 600 square inches, its the largest clear bin usually in stock, and the 38 quart bin is above 150 square inches, revealing the size of these very tiny cages sold in America...Unfortunately, the chain pet stores are more interested in greed, the moolah, than they are in proper animal husbandry... Bins are a great value, the large Niteangel 11-inch wheel cost more than the 200 quart bin, the nice Kaytee large wooden hide cost more than the 38 quart bin... Bins are easier to clean and provide much more area size than these very tiny cages that costs much more, especially that dinosaur monstrosity sold at Petsmart which woun't even make a good lawn ornament...
As a German and animal lover I have to admit that I'm quite proud that we have these standards. My family has 6 hamsters and we keep them according to these recommendations 🥰🥰🥰
I live in Germany and the standards that are talked about in this video aren't checked or always followed... I think many pet owners here use similar care for their hamsters as in North America, though there are less people that do so.
Thank you so much for educating me on hamsters. I've had my Syrian for a week, and I think I've been the best owner I can be. But my parents won't listen to me about getting her a bigger wheel and a bigger cage, they only believe what the shop keeper has said. I feel so bad about her only having a 350 squared inch cage. So luckily I let her have 3 hours walking time outside of her cage when she's awake.
Go to your local store (Walmart, Target, those types of stores) you can buy a bin for about $15 USD I bought my hamsters bin for $25 and it’s around 850 inches squared.
Wow good job Germany! I love how much they care about little hammies. Hopefully North America can reach that level soon! (And get rid of those terrible terrible critter trails and happy tails cages....)
I live in Belgium and it is very easy to have hamster stuff that comes from Germany (it is one of our neighboring countries). Most of my stuff comes from Rodipet or Zooplus. The quality of their products is pretty crazy and their mentalities level well-being hamsters (animals in general) is the most developed I’ve ever seen. I think that for animal welfare Germany is an example to follow! The product I’m most pleased with is birch litter, which I frankly think is one of the best litters I can find. Since it is not softwood it is not toxic for hamsters. It holds the hamster galleries well and is 100% natural. It’s a shame that in my country (and in a lot if others country) it’s so hard to find... Instead, we’re being fed softwood litter, the worst thing we can have!
Ich lebe auch in Deutschland ich habe einen kleinen dschungarischen Zwerghamster er ist super süß was für einen Hamster hast du oder hast du gar keinen
They think this because I spent a lot on my cage and bake my sand because it's not heat treated and the fact I keep the sand outside. Then they think the hamsters should get one toy when really that not the case each chew is different for every hamster Thank you for reading have a great day
Germany Pet store workers actually have training snd they had small cages but the employee they recommended a giant 910SQ inches of floor space Cage and they give us big wheels for Robos
If the Germany people’s see the hamster care in Brazil they’ll die! It’s horrible, they buy hamsters for kids, and the kids don’t know about the hamsters cares, keep them in critter trails, it’s sad. :( (i am Brazilian, and I hate the fact that don’t have the Carefresh or Kaytee substrate here tho)
I feel so bad now, i am from norway and i have a lagre cage for my hamster but not so much bedding. I have the digging tower that you didn`t recomend, but i am a child who`s living a long road from pet stores. Therfore i can`t really buy stuff by my own, and my mom is working a lot so yea. I feel really bad. Btw; Sorry about my english, ,,,,, hehe
Fun fact about german pet stores: When Christmas is coming closer they dont want to sell hamsters, mice, rats etc. Because they don't want that they r selling an animal as a present or gift for a lil kid❤️🇩🇪
If only everyone could see your videos, I just got a hamster a week ago but realised the cage was too small because of your channel and now I'm going to get a larger one.
This video was really interesting and helped me know alot more things about Hamsters. Great video Victoria and also congratulations on 200K! (Sorry I'm late.) I've been waiting ages for a new video. Thank you for replying!!
Hamsters love multi-chamber hideouts. When ours is drying afer cleaning and my hammie have to wait for it, he is mega sad, walking from one corner to another looking for it, digging in spot where it used to be. This hideouts can be made of wood or just cardboard and are quite easy to do ;)
Wow, I really admire the German care standards! Unfortunately though, since I live in a dorm my two hamsters only have 660 sq.in of space. (They both have the bin cages I could fit in my room) I guess that means when I move to a bigger place, I should upgrade them.
A downside to german hamstercare (or any pet care in Germany) is that people in online forums and on FB groups tend to be really aggressive towards anyone who doesn't meet the standards. They say "it is the law"(it is not, small cages are sold in stores) and "you are abusing your pet" if you don't meet these standards, while many of these people probably still eat meat. I think it is important to inform yourself before getting a pet and try to give them the best live possible is important, but there should always be room for error and improvement and mentoring in a nice way (like Victoria does!). To me as a 13 year old it was very discouraging because I felt whatever I did for my guinea pigs was never enough, while the 30 year olds that told me this is necessary could dedicate a whole room to their pets. Don't get me wrong, I think it is good to hold yourself to a high standard... but if others don't need that standard, there should be constructive and nice criticism given. Not just judgement and threats, which I often see in german pet groups.
honestly, germany has a higher standard for pet care in general. it would be a lot easier to take care of my pets if there were higher pet care standards in north america
Hello where did you get your pink hamster wheel? Or where do you recommend to buy wheels like websites 😊 please and thank you ive been having trouble finding a wheel for my robo i have the 6.5 inch wheel rn from kaytee
American minimum hamster standards- bare minimum care so you aren't actively torturing your hamster Germany minimum hamster standards- provide a good and happy life for your hamster
I‘m from German and I always watch your videos and I was so suprised when I saw your video cuz there is „German“ in your title and I was like: „German what?“
If 100cm x 50 cm is the standard in Germany, why they have 12 Syrians in one of those tanks at the pet store. I house our Syrian in an 80 x 50 tank and he is very happy living in it. He has plenty of hideouts, toys, burrowing space. No signs of stress. Seems to me these new standards are aimed to discourage people from getting these pets.
Hi Victoria how are you doing today fine I hope. Thanks so much for sharing this video with us it was so informative. And a happy Saturday to you to. I really love watching your videos so so much. Your brilliant. Well take real good care of yourself and your pet's and lots of love from Jackie Beauty and Ginny bye for now love Jackie xxxx
I live in Wisconsin, walking into petco makes me wanna slam my head against a wall, NONE of the cages are acceptable. At least they don't sell softwood, cotton, or scented bedding?
Yay!I love your videos so I was waiting all day and I was really excited!I love the German care guide,at least they know how to give a hamster a happy life💖😀
@@VictoriaRaechel I really love your videos because now if I get a hamster I will know how to give them a proper happy life,so thank you for giving us great hamster information and I hope you are ok,because Tater Tot was lovely, but she is in an amazing place now and has everywhere to explore, love you and thank you for everything 💖
Another very important thing is that we dont use chew toys made out of any textile (like the carrot chew toy, which was seen in the video) because it can lead to bowel closure . :)
I was doing something similar to North American care for my hamster but recently I upgraded his enclosure and so now it’s much more like German hamster standard without even realizing how much it’s like German care. I’m rly glad tho!
The inches and centimetres weren't perfectly translated, the minimum entrance for a dwarf (5cm) is 2 inches and (7 cm) is 2.5 inches, the translation of the north American minimum cage measurement is also wrong in cm 💕😇 I'm a proud German hamster owner and what you said is true ahah lysm! 💕
5cm is 1.9 inches, 2.5 inches is 6.3cm. The measurements were correct but thank you. The north american measurement was supposed to be 38cm but it got mixed up to 83 a simple mistake.
Thank you! Sadly it's a bit hard for me to do bloppers since when I'm editing I cut out any mistakes so then I'd have to go through the clips again and find them and it would be quite time consuming!
its quite hard living in the Philippines when you own a hamster they don't have paper bedding and if there were paper bedding here it would be like 800 pesos witch is almost half of my allowance so i use aspen bedding witch is 500 pesos still expensive but anything for my hamsters and there is no like as in NO hamster vets where i live but.. Great video iv'e never clicked a video so fast in my life keep up the good work
