Germanicus was perhaps the most popular general of the Roman Empire. His reputation among his soldiers and with the Roman public was unparalleled during his short life and increasingly after his death.
He is remembered for restoring honor to the Roman Empire after the disastrous Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. The victories of Germanicus over Roman nemesis Arminius allowed him to be considered a hero to the empire. His legacy lived on after his passing, with his brother, son, and grandson all becoming emperor of Rome.

@Astuga
@Astuga 5 лет назад
Actually it was less glorious then the title of the video claims. There are very few Roman sources who describe these events (and they are to be taken with a grain of salt). And very likely for a reason. In the end all those military actions were very costly also for the Romans and they didn`t achieve their main objective. In the time following they made use of a more defensive military strategy. Which turned out to be more effective in the long run. Due to the conflicts between the Germanic tribes themselves.

He didn't distinguish himself with any major victories but he made no huge errors either. While his stepfather octavian thought about the moment Tiberius thought about the future. So yes the policy was preferred to another war. Germanicus may very well have been a Better officer than his step uncle but the bottom line is octavian's place in history was saved by tiberius.

Just before Octavian died, In one last insult to his stepson, Octavian compelled Tiberius to set aside his son Drusus in favor of Tiberius' Nephew, Germanicus. @House of Savoy Romans destroyed any people when they were on their way. However they didn't fight against Germanics, Celts or Greeks or other People because of ethnicity or racism but because they wanted to rule and dominate the world . They were not like Nazis. Actually Rome had also Germanic allies and mercenaries that were part of the Roman army. Nordicists are ignorant and stupid üeople since they pretend that Southern Europeans are less European than Northern ones. Europe is losing it's Christian and Greco-Roman identity while Northern and Southern Europeans fight each other over history.
@wisedragon173
@wisedragon173 5 лет назад
@@SuperMrFriendly Bear in mind European heritage and identity are based largely on Greco-Roman culture but also on Germanic-Celtic culture. After the Roman Empire fell ironically the Germanic tribes became the successors and hires of the Roman heritage and founded many European nations/kingdoms. It's a matter of fact that Rome is the mother of all European Empires, formed and shaped Europe. Hence the Germanic Kings called their Empires "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation". Furthermore, there are many ridiculous and racist Nordicists who pretend that Southern Europeans are less European or less Caucasian. Bottom line Romans, Germanics or Celts were all native Europeans that belonged to the so-called Indo-European stock and shared common distant ancestors.

It is interesting to reflect that Germanicus had all the qualities to make a superb Roman Emperor but for his untimely death. His family was treated very poorly by Tiberius but one of his sons, Caligula, "little boots" as his father's soldiers called him, followed after Tiberius as Emperor with high hopes that he would be just like his dad. Caligula quickly turned into a full blown monster, as terrible as any Emperor, before he was assassinated after 4 of so years.
@Dbusdriver71

Octavian compelled Tiberius to set aside his Son Drusus by Vispania in Favor of Germanicus his Nephew. Drusus had to remain outside Rome until Octavian dies and he could be brought to Rome to join his father Tiberius. One last insult from Octavian who didn't want Tiberius to be Emperor. Tiberius had strong reservations about his Nephew based on how he acted and handled himself with the Revolt of the Army on the Rhine. To the credit of Drusus, he cooperated with his Father as he knew it was not his fathers doing. Germanicus was likely poisoned by someone close to Piso; Tiberius' hands are 'clean'. Octavian's place in history was saved by his Step Son whom he didn't favor but had no choice as his two other nephews were dead in accidents.

Actually, Tiberius took good care of Germanicus' children. Germanicus' sons Nero and Drusus Caesar were adopted by Drusus the Younger, Tiberius' son, and boosted their careers in the senate, praising them and promising both the office of Quaestor in 5 years time because both were before the legal age at the time. where it all went to shit though, was with the Praetorian prefect Sejanus. He went out of his way to poison Drusus the younger, prosecute and execute the family of Germanicus, in the end only Caligula, Agrippina the younger, Drusilla, and Livilla remained of his children.

"Rome was in her six hundred and fortieth year when the alarm of the Cimbrian arms was first heard, in the consulship of Caecilius Metellus and Papirius Carbo. Reckoning from that year to the second consulship of the emperor Trajan, we get a total of about two hundred and ten years. Such is the time it is taking to conquer Germany. In this long period much punishment has been given and taken. Neither by the Samnites nor by the Carthaginians, not by Spain or Gaul, or even by the Parthians, have we had more lessons taught us. The freedom of Germany is capable of more energetic action than the Arsacid despotism. After all, what has the East to taunt us with, except the slaughter of Crassus? And it soon lost its own prince Pacorus and was humbled at the feet of Ventidius. But the Germans routed or captured Carbo, Cassius, Aurelius Scaurus, Servilius Cacpio, and Mallius Maximus, and robbed the Republic, almost at one stroke, of five consular armies. Even from Augustus they took Varus and his three legions. And we had to pay a high price for the defeats inflicted upon them by Gaius Marius in Italy, by Julius Caesar in Gaul, and by Drusus, Tiberius, and Germanicus in their own country. The boastful threats of Gaius Caesar ended in farce. After that came a lull, until the Germans took advantage of our dissensions and civil wars to storm the quarters of the legions and make a bid for possession of Gaul. This attempt ended in another defeat for them; but the more recent 'victories' claimed by our commanders have been little more than excuses for celebrating triumphs." TACITUS Germania

It might have been a guy called Piso. Tiberius had given Germanicus authority over the Eastern part of the Empire that superceded the power of Governors and client-kings...to make feel the presence of Rome. By this time, Germanicus was basically a junior Co-emperor. Anyway, Piso was not happy with the new setup. He and Germanicus got into a power struggle and Germanicus removed him from his position. Since Egypt, Germanicus got more and more sick and suspected that Piso had cursed him.😅 Germanicus didn't die all of a sudden. But his body did display signs of poisoning. Perhaps he was poisoned slowly by a cook or a slave or something (in the service of Piso).

Germanicus was a very competent general and statesman. That combined with the love of the people makes you wonder what if Tiberius hadent sent him off to the boondocks and positioned. His family suffered, and the people suffered at the hands of his family. He could have changed the fate of the Julio Claudian dynasty and with him as emperor continued the golden age of empire. Its all speculation of course, but he would have been a fine emperor and his male prodigy and heirs wouldnt have ended up dead or monsters

3:20 Arminius was not a Roman ally he was a Captain of the Roman army
@tylerdurden3722

For a while, he was the leader of the Cherusci, who was officially a Roman ally at that point in time. When he executed his planned ambush, the Romans were still under the impression that the Cherusci were allies. Later, the Romans learned that the Tribe had split into two factions. One wanting to remain allied with Rome led by Segestes...and the other faction wanting to break allegiance, led by Arminius. Arminusx of course won. Rome arranged an expedition to rescue the faction that argued to remain allied once the Romans learned of their allies' now uncertain situation.

There wasn't really an invasion like you imagine. What happened was: 1. Rome was already rotten by corruption. 2. It became reliant of barbarian mercenaries, half of whom lived inside the empire. 3. The Huns were marauding across the Eurasia Steppe from the east. Massive numbers of Goths begged the Romans to let them in warning about the coming of the Huns, promising to help the Romans fight the Huns. But, some Roman commander decided to slaughter the massive number of refugees he hadjust let in, but he failed and this backfired. Those Goths who were let in, had also realized that Rome was just an empty shell of its former glory, once they were allowed to see inside. So it wasn't really an invasion. They were let in as refugees. But they were backstabbed, and so they rampaged across the western half of the empire. The Eastern half of Rome still survived for another 1000 years.

Augustus held tiberius as the last choice of being his heir because he knew that tiberius wasn't the best Drusus and Germanicus were his top choices
@tylerdurden3722
@tylerdurden3722 2 года назад
Tiberius was actually a very talented general. He was the reason the eagle standards were retrieved from Parthia. And many times he had to come and help Drussus in the west. The problem with Tiberius was that he was unwilling and uninterested. He made great efforts to avoid becoming Emperor. Even withdrawing from politics and declaring himself a private citizen. (Augustus had to beg him to come back when everyone else died) While Augustus was still alive, Tiberius tried to groom several individuals to become Emperor, just so that he himself could escape becoming emperor. But these kept on being assassinated😅. Germanicus, became Tiberius' new attempt to escape political life. It was Tiberius who fast tracked Germanicus' career. Putting Germanicus through the political ladder in record time (these were literal records). He even put Germanicus at the head of an army at age 21, just so hie career could go faster. When Tiberius recalled Germanicus from Germania, Tiberius had basically made Germanicus co-emperor, who was given authority over the Eastern Part of the Empire. The eastern part had less supervision due to its distance and the governors there got away with a lot of autonomy. Hence why Tiberius sent Germanicus there with supreme authority. Germanicus being made the boss, got him into a power struggle with Piso. Piso was removed from his position by Germanicus. Germanicus continued to rule the east. After going sight seeing in Egypt, Germanicus started to feel unwell. Germanicus blamed Piso for his inexplicable illness. Another one of Tiberius' groomed heirs died.😅 And Germanicus wasn't the last.

This video brings up a few questions I have had about the tribes of northern Europe at this time: 1. I had thought that during the first millennium BC, the Celtic tribes were the dominant tribal group of northern Europe, and that at one point they controlled what is now Germany, France, Britain, and Ireland. I had thought that the Gauls of France were a Celtic tribe and spoke a form of Gaelic. I guess that Arminius and his people were German and spoke an ancient form of German. When did the Germans replace the Celts as the dominant tribe of what is now Germany? 2. Regarding later tribes, e.g. Huns, Goths, and Vandals, what languages did they speak? Were they Germanic too?
@Michael-wn4jj
@Michael-wn4jj 5 лет назад
I think the germanic tribes did not replace the celts located roughly south of river Main. Actually the Romans romanized celtic culture. Centuries later when the Franks and Alemannies pushed against Rome celtic culture had already disappeared from this area of Europe. However that ancient celtic/germanic border survived till our days in a certain manner. f.e. South Germany dialects are more bright and soft, in the north rather sharp and clear. The south is catholic while the north is protestantic In the north they like potatos while in the south nudles are preferred. People in the northern part of Germany have often blonde hairs, in the south mostly brown.

Unadin After the Fall of Rome they got stronger, they built there own Kingdoms and most Celts adopted German culture and mixed with them, i have for example Blue eyes and golden dark hair common by Germanic people, but my nose is bigger and a little bit hooked, that noses are more common by Celts, so i am a mixed guy of Celtic and Germanic.

Germanicus did win battles against Arminius (while severely losing others, and ending some effectively in a tie), but he was most definitely not successful in his campaign objectives into Germania Magna, completely failing to revive the conquest of the territory east of the Rhine. He neither managed to convince Arminius to give in, nor did he capture or kill him, he failed to break the alliance of Germanic tribes and didn't manage to decisively decimate the Germanic forces, which continued to be a considerable threat and lead Rome to change its strategic approach from conquest and expansion to securing and controlling a border with only rather limited campaigns beyond it. The fact that he recovered only two of the three lost Eagles was considered a symbolic sign of failure, much like the fact that he found himself unable to rebuild the memorial tumulus at the Varus battle site after the Germani had first destroyed it. Tiberius considered Germanicus' campaigns as catastrophic and too costly, and recalled him with the promise of preserving his honor regardless. All this hogwash around Germanicus' "superiority" and "minor Roman losses" vs. "huge German(sic) casualties" and a "brilliantly fought campaign" smacks of fiction and propaganda. Apart from that you are missing two things: The near disaster of Caecina (losing 15.000 soldiers in one battle alone at the Pontes Longi) and the panic in Vetera when only Agrippina maiors intervention stopped the garrison from destroying the rhine bridge, saving the withdrawing legions. These incidents of 15 AD don't indicate a very succesful campaign of Germanicus. Considering Arminius being able to defeat Marobodus 17 AD (Marbodus have had a 74.000 srtong army) his losses to Germanicus in 16 AD couldn't have been crippling. Germanicus led 8 Legions into Germania, a third of the imperial army, without lasting success. Compare this with Vespasians 3 legions (plus allies) in Iudaea or Traians 7 Legions in his first dacian war, both successful campaigns. Even Tacitus described Arminius as victorious: "wining some and losing som battles but unbeaten in war and with no doubt the Liberator of Germania".
