Germany had great defenders this time. Hard to score against Briegel, Breme Förster and Eder. ANd great goalkeeper Schumacher. He was a little bit crazy but legend :)
In fact it was pure class. What a pity this video doesn't show it properly. And @pascalgigi9917: You want to thank Rijkaard for spitting his opponent in his face? (admitting that this was the only dark spot in F. R.'s quite brilliant career) What kind of football fan are you?
Germany played to their abilities, they were hard to beat, were in good physical shape, didn't concede too many high-danger chances and even showed hints creativity in some attacks. France were dominating in the 2nd half but too often lacked composure in the final third. All in all Germany was the better side on the day. Their game wasn't pleasing to the eye but they proved more clinical up front and very committed defensively.
If you have Rummenigge, Matthäus, Schumacher, Magath, Brehme and Briegel on the pitch you can sit back and relax. But France had a real winning team at the start that was destined for the title. A great fight from Germany.
It is interesting that Germany reached both of the WC finals of the 80's (eventually losing) but probably there should have been France instead. Likewise, I think France would lose both of the finals. At least, the 1982 one, while in 1986 Maradona vs Platini would have been truly amazing.
why should have been france in the finals ? the germans beat them crystal clear. it's like u say........germany should win both finals they lost in the 80s in '82 and '86........no they shouldn't. they lost clearly just like france lost the semis....CLEARLY.
@@teamzawafootball1370 Concordo porém a melhor partida deles sempre é contra o Brasil.
They copied German fight and athletics under the rule of Didier Deschamps. And lots of French young players obtain their skills abroad, in German ligue. If it's not in English Premier League
I distinctly remember that one. Up to that point in the whole WC of 1986, the German squad was offering unsightly performances devoid of all playing culture which nonetheless took them to the semi finals. Cos one thing they excelled in was NEVER EVER give up even with your limited means. On the other hand the quarter final game that went before between France and Brazil was, even then, recognized as a hot contender for the very finest match of all time. I am pretty sure that the Selecao would have beaten Germany...but the Equipe Tricolore was, for all the furious, glorious play they offered, for all their Platini, Giresse, Tigana and Rocheteau magic, at a psychological disadvantage to the Germans. Why? Because of Seville 1982...! Those in the know will know what I'm talking about, anybody else check out RU-vid for that in its own turn. So now, all of a sudden, and no doubt helped by a substantial cooling down of the everpresent exhausting heat following a bit of rain, the Germans were able to accept the French challenge to foil fencing. They simply and totally unexpectedly beat them at their own game by their own means...! Still, the second half was downright nerve tearing because the decisive 2nd goal didn't and didn't come, until at the tail end of the game, and in a fashion that richly rewarded all the anxious waiting. Watch and jugde for yourselves, Ladies and Gentlemen...!
Platini was injured and at the tail end of his international career. Does not explain everything, but when France playmakers are injured (Platini 86, Zidane 2002), it does not bode well. But a third place finish is rather decent. What followed was a long dry stretch almost all the way to 1996 (Euro 96 semi).
In general, the German virtues were feared by the enemy at this time. Germany fights for victory until the last second, no matter how well they play. There were also some good players on the pitch for Germany in this match. The Winnertaem France failed not for psychological reasons, but because of the iron will and the convinced fighting ability of the Germans. Nothing remains of this mentality. Germany has simply lost this extra power. Very unfortunate.
@@oleolsonn100never forget that France lost a lot of energy during the previous (fantastic and one of the most beautiful of all times where Platini was good and scored the first goal) match against Brazil which lasted until penalty shootout under a very hard sun. And that they also lost a lot of "mental" strenght during this high-emotionnal game.
Yes, but still, France had all the players there to win the title. They met a good German team, okay. Today Germany would lose with this team and mentality. Back then, German teams never gave up a game until the final whistle blew. The winning team was actually France. France, England and The Netherlands suffered during this time. Today? Oh now...Frends @@oldschoolgeek4199
I clearly remember this match. I slept at living room where our black and white 24” TV was there. I was laying in bed and watching the match. In German football manager face (Frank), I did not a smile to end of the match. He was in very intense situation at that night. At that time, I was in Kabul, Afghanistan
I'd say the French became more clinical without pleasure and finesse now, just athletic - kind of inspired by the former German marks. And Germany now's got talent and technics without aiming straight. 😅
Yet preferred the phantastic swing of "Les Bleus" of that great 80s decade. They really deserved a title by then, even more than just European champion 1984. Germans were terrifying the whole football community by then. But matches were always breathtaking for suspens of getting punished by some 'bomb'. Only Italy - on their best level- could take revenge on teutonic efficiency. Maradona's triumph was kinda forced, though merited.
Strange how the finest generation of this French team lost 2 consecutive world cup semi final to Germany in 82&86. Strange how Germany also both finals to Italy in 82 and Argentina in 86.😮
Was it in this game that Shumacher did that 'murder attempt' challenge on Batiston? How come its not included? Its something that rather shocked me as a kid, and broke some childish ideas about sportsmenship. Or was it in some other meeting of these generations?
It was in the other semi final: France and West Germany in Spain four years before this match (1982 World Cup). Germany won again. Later Batiston forgave Schumacher and invited him for his wedding.

@@M.EngelhART 🙋🏻♂️ Das stimmt allerdings!
I am not a fan of either of them, but Germany was not lucky. Germans simply took their chances and the French were not clinical in their shots. All Maxime Bossis had to do at 2:20 was to tap in, specially when the ball is above your knee which makes it difficult to make a volley. Instead he shoots it with force. I don't blame him; a defender doesn't experience too many such occasions and lacks the experience.
there's no such thing as luck in sports. by your logic everybody when he loses can say it was bad luck.......what r u talking about ? who forbade france to score a goal or two ? nobody. they were just incompetent in this match. admit it and move on dude.
