Bonn is a city in the south of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, spread on both banks of the Rhine River.
Bonn is one of the oldest settlements in Germany with a history of 2000 years. Until the end of the 18th century, the dukes of Cologne preferred Bonn as their administrative center; Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn in 1770. The Friedrich Wilhelm University of the Rhine in the city has been counted among Germany's leading scientific centers since the 19th century.
With the unification of East and West Germany in 1990, Berlin became the capital of Germany, and it was decided to refer to Bonn as the "government center" until 1990. Although the Bundestag and most of the government departments have moved to Berlin, the main buildings of 6 federal ministries are located in Bonn, and some departments of other ministries continue to operate in the city.
