GERMANY: "This is a real danger!" The urgent warning from a security expert!
According to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the war in Gaza are also exacerbating the security situation in Germany. The security situation remains tense, said Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) on Tuesday at the presentation of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution's report for 2023 in Berlin. The President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, spoke of a "currently very high level of threats" and "complex challenges". The danger continues to be caused by the right-wing extremist scene, whose following has continued to grow in the past year.
Haldenwang said that since Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel, there has been an increased risk potential from Islamists. According to his report, the number of Islamists in Germany has remained almost unchanged at 27,200 people (2022: 27,480). Nevertheless, the domestic intelligence service estimates the risk to have increased since Hamas' attack on Israel. Faeser referred to the recent knife attack by a suspected Islamist in Mannheim, in which a police officer was killed, and reiterated her intention to deport violent offenders and dangerous individuals to Syria and Afghanistan in the future. Germany's security interests have priority here, she said.
Faeser also emphasized the ongoing threat of Russian espionage, cyberattacks and disinformation that attempts to sow anger and hatred. Since June, Faeser's ministry has been working on an interdepartmental office that is designed to identify foreign attempts at manipulation as early as possible.
Haldenwang also pointed out the dangers posed by domestic actors. The networking activities of the so-called New Right have continued to increase, he said. The importance of these actors for the right-wing extremist scene is growing. At the end of last year, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution counted around 40,600 people as part of the right-wing extremist scene. That was almost 2,000 more than the year before. More than one in three (around 14,500 people) of them are considered to be prepared to use violence. The classic right-wing extremist scene thus remains the largest anti-constitutional group in Germany.
According to the annual report, the scene of “Reich Citizens” and “Self-Governors” also grew: at the end of 2023, around 25,000 people belonged to it, also around 2,000 more than in the previous year. Ten percent of them are classified as being prepared to use violence.
The Office for the Protection of the Constitution counted around 1,600 people in the group of those who do not fall into the classic extremist spectrum but who nevertheless act against the state and its institutions in a manner relevant to the protection of the constitution, 200 more than in the previous year. 250 of them are considered to be prepared to use violence. This is slightly less than in the previous year's report, which, according to the domestic secret service, is mainly due to the fact that the end of the protective measures associated with the corona pandemic has eliminated the central emotionalization and mobilization theme of this scene.
According to the report, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution estimates the potential number of left-wing extremists at 37,000, 500 more than in the previous year. More than one in four (11,200) are classified as being prepared to use violence.
