Aquarium with shop lights in them works great to, just put the baggie on top of the aquarium and the heat radiating from it will keep your seeds at a stable temperature.

Also, not all heating mats for plants are the same. Some are too hot. Get one with a thermostat. I'm waffling on whether to start in a dark place or not. I had very little luck with heat mat and bright LED lighting. Maybe 10% of my seeds sprouted and those were marigolds and cosmos. Literally none of the peppers. May have to give this chamomile thing a try this February.

This is the proverbial golden nugget! Now I know how to protect my seeds from fungus and bacteria! I've been having this issue with my starter seeds before even getting the plants in the ground! Thank you for the brilliant germination tip too! I'm Subscribing. I'm a struggling newbie. To be in point to your gardening information, what growing zone are you in? I'm in 7a, Virginia. In a community with stamp size plots and trying to grow a garden in to raised planters on the deck. Last year wasn't a total fail, but wouldn't survive on it. I have found out how important soil is and the organic soil from the stores have not been prepped for much so I've been adding kitchen scraps since last fall. I've had some success in regrowing kitchen scraps like celery, scallions but haven't been able to sustain others like lettuce. They start and then rot. I do have an abundance of avocado plants however, I know the area won't be warm enough to sustain them long term. It just isn't consistently warm enough here for them, and my roommate is already complaining about the amount of 'greenery' in the family room. This is the problem with the open concept floorplan, discretion isn't possible. 🤭 There is no basement for a grow light, and the double garage is taken up. If this has given you ideas to share, please do. Many are in the same situation just in my crowded area. 👍🥳

Very cool to know!! Would using chamomile tea to water some plants help with killing fungus or bacteria, then?
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 6 месяцев назад
If you are referring to the green algae growing on the surface of your starting mix that's not bacteria or fungi and technically not harmful to the seedling. The algae can make seedling growth slow down because it blocks the exchange of gas in and out of the medium. Just scrape it off and add some vermiculite over top of the seedling mix. I can't really speak on house plants too much because I try to grow organically. Seedling mix is soilless and why I would use a anti-bacterial anti-fungal tea. Not in my compost or soil because I want to encourage both beneficial bacteria and fungi. Not sure if that's what you are asking.

Honestly, I learn from watching you all. I like to know why things work in the garden so I keyword search. “Why are pepper seeds difficult to germinate”? The seed cost…. Keyword “testa”, so on and so on. When you have more information on the function of the testa you know why hot peppers are more difficult to germinate. They have a tight seal. Keyword “scarification” The answers all are in keywords. That’s how I try to make the content interesting. Simple with just a bit of textbook. People feel that they leave with more than they came with. They subscribe to say thank you. Thank you.

It's not necessary to do it with all seeds. But it can be done with seeds that take a really long time to germinate like peppers. I also do very similar to my okra seeds. Wooow, thank you. This is amazing information!! I'm definitely going to try this very, very soon. Will this work for any seeds or peppers specifically? Silly question, I know but thank you❤❤

I do a similar technique with okra. I would only try this on seeds that take longer to germinate.

Can we use any kind of tea or does it have to be chamomile?

You would have to look up the health benefits of the particular tea. That’s how I came up with chamomile.

Wow! That's crazy. I just planted seeds almost a week ago and nothing yet. 😂 I'll try this method for sure.

The key is getting them to germinate. This takes maybe 12 hours on average.

Instead of chamomile tea, would honey water work too? Honey is also antibacterial and anti fungal
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 6 месяцев назад
That maybe interesting to try just honey. I wouldn't do it outside but that sounds like it may make since.

thanks for getting back to me! I was only planning on trying this indoors anyway to give my pepper plants a head start. Will try this with some ghost pepper seeds. I'm told that they normally take a long time to germinate. @@growingoutthebox
