This is a wonderful song about the men forced to emigrate to foreign shores to survive the bad times in Ireland. God they worked hard and to dull the pain played hard too.
I listen to this song often,as someone who was lucky enough to have good people round me when I lived in England,I know many who have fallen by the wayside, thankfully I was able to move home,
wonderful song Gerry the best emigration song I know of..covers so many aspects of leaving home...this song was written with Gerrys uncle P.J.Kelly in mind. P.J. was killed on a building site accident in 1960s I was at his funeral in Bekan a very sad day.. There are many fine versions of this song but this is the original and the BEST...... Well done Gerry....
Yea, agreed with everything everyone said, I emmigrated in 1989 with 126 pounds and got of the bus and looked right and left and thought Ok which direction should I go at Victoria Coach station in London - only a young girl - its just happening all the time but thank God our young people are least going abroad with an education now. Well done Gerry - brilliantly captured
@pembrokeshire100 as you can see from the comments, you are pretty much alone in your opinion, but of course you are entitled to it. i am proud to have written this song, and it has changed my life. it is dedicated to my late uncle pj kelly, who was killed in a trench on a building site in england in 1964 at the age of 21 years. thanks for going to the trouble of posting your comment, its sbout the only negative one that i have recieved and it doesn.t bother me in the least
gerry l love this song paddy and lt tells the life of the lrish man that worked in England all them years ago so well done 👏 and may your uncle rest in peace 🙏
Love this song. Think it is on par with Phil Colter's song, "The Town I Love So Well". It is a song that will have so much meaning to a lot of people that had loved ones forced to travel to England to find work in order to put food on the table. Well done Gerry, brilliant.
This is a song that any and every Irish man woman and child will remember and most likely hail as the NEW IRISH national anthem...........FABULOUS. The melody is lovely too. I dont know anything about you yet Gerry......but I have a feeling I am gonna hear an awful lot more very soon...........best wishes for the future
As someone who lived away this song will always be special to me, so many still for one reason or another will be alone this Christmas n this song always reminds me how lucky I was to be able to return to my homeland,
Fantastic Song Gerry, caught you few times live and it you were superb. Well done and keep writing these great songs. everyone over 40 can relate to these and sadly those youngsters can now. Keep up the great work and don't worry about the begrudgers
