That first sax intro does something to me. This song takes me right bank to being 5, in the back seat of my mom's 67 Mercury Cougar, diving from San Jose to Santa Cruz for the weekend.

When this first came out I was 16. I had Red Flu. Our old Victorian house had no heating upstairs, so lay on a make shift bed in front of the coal fire in the living room. I kept hearing this being played on our old peeling blue Roberts radio, from the kitchen. I was sweating and slightly "gone". That sax just filled me up. People say that 1970's England was a dark time. It wasn't for this teenager. We had far fewer material possessions but we had this kind of music and the BBC was amazing back then. The darkness, sadly, is now.

@Cicada 3301 The song was written during Rafferty's disatisfaction with the music industry and the legal ranglings of contracts he no longer wanted to be a part of. He did drink during this period but due to the financial frustrations while staying in a flat in Baker Street (London), travelling between Glasgow and London, not 'sleeping around and alcoholism'. Listen to the song.

I lived on a farm out in the country and all I remember complaining about was having to eat corn, carrots, and potatoes for every meal. I wish I could go back. Now, I’ve barely left home since last March due to Covid and I have too much to worry about. Hope everyone is hanging in there during these trying times.❤️🙏🏻

No one remembers that it was Raphael Ravenscroft, the “stand in” saxophonist, who made this song so great and memorable. It wasn’t even written for Sax, the other musician never showed up & one of the band members rang Raphael and asked him to come in & play the part. The rest is history as they say.

The sax is wonderful and totally did elevate the song, but all the other elements are critically essential too. Everything works together and builds off each other so beautifully in this masterpiece. But I do miss the sax, and I've been missing it since the late seventies/earlier 80s.

Your version of history is incorrect! ! The master tapes are all dated and signed by the sound engineer, that same riff by Ralph was on tape in guitar and Gerry thought it had something missing, Ralph was in the studio as a session player for another recording that day, and was asked to play. the riff and done so brilliantly, this information came from Gerry's Owen mouth on interviews, and is backed up by other musicians present and the dated master tapes which are done so for "COPYWRITING".all easily checkable.🙏 PS. The original recording was filmed and as you can clearly see there was "NO" missing musician.

I just thought that I would tell a story about myself. Way back in 1979 I got my heart broken and I was so down and out. But for some reason I would listen to this album and every bit of my sadness would go away and I just felt so good. Once the album was done I would pretty much go back feeling depressed again. I met someone else who I really really love and have been married to for going on 38 years. But I still have days where I still miss the girl I was so in love with. I am sure that they she never thinks of me. She will be in my heart for the rest of my life. I was like 19 at the time and I am now going on sixty two. I love my Wife but I so pose I will get over the other girl. My Wife has given me the best days of my life along with my stepdaughter who I also love with all of my heart.

Rest In Peace: Gerry Rafferty (1947-2011): The song "Baker Street," from the album "City To City" came out in 1978. I was 8 years old when it came out, flashback 46 years later, it still plays in radii stations around the 50 state's & around the world.

Honestly if I hadn’t had my music, I think I would’ve gone absolutely insane. This started for me in March and now we’re on Round Two. I’m so ready for “life to be good again” like Dolly Partons new song suggests. ❤️🙏🏻hope you are well in these uncertain times.

I want this played at my final services. It simply fills a void in my soul. Ranks at the top of my all time greatest hits list and I’m 76 this year. I’ve heard some of the very best music in my life that has ever been made.

Jim, I agree! Best music ever in our lifetimes. I started listening to contemporary music in the 1950’s, it just got better decade after decade. The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were unmatched. All the while country was coming on strong in the 80’s. I was listening to country starting in the 60’s but it blew up in popularity in the 80’s. We are so blessed to have lived and loved in these decades.

Story goes that the sax player was supposed to do a guitar riff but when he went to his car to retrieve his guitar at the studio....he realized he left it at home.....he grabbed his sax and asked Kenny if he could play it instead.......Kenny was a bit hesitant wanting it to be a guitar finally said yes.....and one of the most beautiful ( romantic) sax parts was born! Thank you sirs!
