Two small cavils. Ira is pronounced "Eye-ruh". And the Ella recording you play is her rendition of the verse Irving Berlin's "Isn't It A Lovely Day To Be Caught In The Rain". (A spectacular song, but not by Gershwin.)
It might sounds exaggerated, but I consider Porgy and Bess as the greatest piece of music ever. Of course Gerhswin has been inspired a lot by Verdi, Wagner, Bizet and probably Puccini but he eventually composed an outstanding opera like absolutely no other (and I am talking about the whole original piece, which lasts at least 195 minutes). George Gershwin is a quite underrated composer for what he brought to music history, especially with his orchestral works and he was surely one of the finest composers ever.
Absolutely, we couldn't agree more! Porgy and Bess is undeniably a masterpiece, showcasing Gershwin's unparalleled talent and creativity. His ability to blend classical influences into a fresh, innovative composition is truly awe-inspiring. It's comments like yours that highlight the enduring impact of Gershwin's work.
