My name is Alec Newland, and I am an experimental archaeologist specialising in the Anglo-Saxon Period. This project aims to recreate the Anglo-Saxon culture of southern Britain between 650 and 700 A.D., from domestic crafts to the weapons and regalia of the warrior class, and, eventually, the development of an Anglo-Saxon farmstead and estate.
Gesiþas Gewissa means ‘warriors of the Gewissæ’. During the 5th and 6th centuries, Gesiþs were warrior companions or retainers to a king or chieftain, who offered their loyalty in exchange for gifts of gold. During the 7th century, kings and nobles began to give land as well as gold, and Gesiþs became the landed aristocratic warrior class.
The Gewissæ were an Anglo-Saxon tribe, with their heartland situated in the Upper Thames Valley and the Vale of the White Horse. During the 7th century, the Gewissæ expanded their territories south-west into the British lands of Wiltshire and Somerset, although they lost their northern-most territories to the powerful Mercian Iclingas. The Kings of the Gewissæ became known as the Kings of the Saxons and would eventually form the kingdom of Wessex itself.
I was born and grew up in the same wooded valleys that the Gewissæ called home. Their legacy remains today, in the form of lonely burial mounds set upon hillsides, and ancient remnants of great border forests. These ancient places inspired the project and its name.
With thanks to:
Herknungr, Musician, playing 'The Wolf Chieftan'.
Hector Cole, Blacksmith, for forging the Saxon T-shaped Axe.
Grzegorz Kulig, Silversmith, for making the pattern-welded knife.

@@gesithasgewissa Well looking forward to the Anglo saxon house episodes. TA Outdoors did one but I'm sure you could do just as good a job if not better. Be nice to hear you talk through them too. Maybe 20-30 mins episodes, we don't all have goldfish levels of attention for this sort of stuff. As I said very impressed.

I just discovered your channel. I binged the videos you have and will wait expectantly for more. I love History/archaeology, but since I am an Australian, we only have a little to study since we have had a very short history so far. I live vicariously through other countries' History and find it all fascinating. I love to watch videos of Guédelon Castle in France being built by traditional methods. Your work is covering my favourite period also, so I’m doubly happy to have found you! I shall look forward to binge watching your videos over the next few days! Hail from the South Saxon shores! @@gesithasgewissawere the Anglo-Saxons Christian before arriving in Britain, or did they pick that up from the Romano-Britons?
@gesithasgewissa
@gesithasgewissa 10 месяцев назад
@@stoutyyyy The Anglo-Saxons were pagan upon their arrival in Britain, and slowly adopted Christianity with influence from both the Celtic Romano-British church and Roman Catholic missionaries from the continent. By the 7th century, many, but not all, elite leaders had adopted Christianity politically, but paganism was still widespread amongst the lower classes.

Would love to know if "Gewissa" is related to the German "Gewissen" (conscience). Do you know more about this?
@gesithasgewissa
@gesithasgewissa 3 месяца назад
I believe they are related! With Old English being very close to the old Germanic languages. The "Gewisse" may have meant the "wise" or even the "certain", the "true", or the "trusted ones", which is quite fitting given their likely origin as a 'comitatus' war-band; a group of loyal warriors in service to a warrior king.

I find this kind of stuff fascinating! I love watching the creation of hand made things created entirely from non industrialized stuffs you can just find in bushes. And even more so as these were some of my ancestors. That being said there are a lot of folks out there who are interested in content that shows ancient European cultures (particularly, Nordic and Germanic ones) because of their nativist and xenophobic sentiments. I would love to get your perspective on this.
@gesithasgewissa
@gesithasgewissa 2 месяца назад
Glad to hear it! I am very interested in the Anglo-Saxons, Romano-British and Northern European cultures because they are my heritage, but I think xenophobia is pointless, to give one example, Anglo-Saxon and Germanic tribes travelled as far as Byzantium and back, picking up cultural influences all along the way as did Byzantine travellers and others from all over the known world. The Sutton Hoo burial is a great example of this; the helmet is a Late-Roman ridge helmet, the hanging bowl is Celtic, the shield and armaments may have Swedish and continental influences, there is a Byzantine bronze bucket and small items from as far away as Syria. Even the red garnets in the cloisonné travelled all along the silk road from as far away as Sri Lanka. Finding something that is 'purely Anglo-Saxon' in there is actually quite difficult 😄 This wouldn't happen if people didn't move around and share cultures. The world is and always has been dynamic and ever-fluid. I think it's important to celebrate indigenous cultural heritage, and that includes European culture, but we don't need to lock it away in a fortress. Culture has always developed through the sharing and intermingling of new ideas, I say let's embrace that rather than trying to stagnate and hold things in one place. Thanks for the great question!
