Before this even starts, i got my first job, walking the docks fishing with my plastics, got on a line fishing boat, decided to get my coxswain grade 1, skippers license, got 10 days commercial work left, going on a trawler to do that. Will then move onto a job barramundi guiding, which is my passion.

Any advice for someone trying to find a deckhand job with no experience and in a different state? I live in the mid/southwest and want to fish in the New England area.
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 года назад
The same rules apply anywhere for fishing jobs. Go find the docks where the fishing boats are, walk those docks when the fishermen are getting ready for a new fishing season, and hope someone takes you. If you look up the department of fish and game for your desired state and you find the commercial fishing regulations, that will tell you historically when Fish and Game opens the season up. Let the people know you're there to work hard and learn fast. If you're fit and healthy and sober someone will take you. Being green is often desireable for captains because experiecned hands can often be hard to coach. Each boat is different and each captain handles their crew differently. Fresh recruits are easy to train, so don't feel less valuable because you're new. You will start off with a smaller crewshare than a vetted crew member tho, thats a part of the game

Man, I hsve been out of the game for a little getting some other things straight - so I don't know anyone right now, but best thing to do is get on the docks and ask around! If you try, I wish you fair winds and full nets.

How much money did you make?
@Wesley0493
@Wesley0493 4 года назад
@@Offsure i didnt make very much we didnt get alot of fish it was 2016 and 2018 i was up there but i was also spending alot trying to kill time between openers. but if you were to save what you make and not go out drinking like i did you can get 10 to 15k in your pocket by the end of the season. Everything is really expensive there but the canneries will give you a place to stay and 3 meals a day so you really dont need to go out and spend anything its just hard to not get caught up in the partying when you start making friends.

I don't intend to be a jerk, as I love the effort but find it funny that someone who had never worked as a deckhand by his own admission is trying to explain how to "successfully" get hired as a deckhand...lol.

Do most commercial fishing leave for a couple of weeks or do they come back at the end of the day? And what are the fishing jobs that do leave out to sea for awhile called? Also this is an even dumber question what is the average salary? I’m trying to give my family a better life so I’m wondering if I should relocate for this.

How do I get one of those "Most Dangerous Jobs" type gigs?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 5 лет назад
Fishing is one of the most dangerous jobs you can work, but each fishery manages a different level and kind of danger. I’m betting you’re asking about the Alaskan King Crab vessels though eh? For those boats, like any fishing boat, the best way is to walk the docks where those boats make harbor, donit before the crabbing season starts because there is ore season work to be done. You can also work on a tender in Alaska in the summer time and then if it fishes crab in the winter you can stay onboard and fish in he winter too
