If you're a weekend warrior who is struggling to get more gigs and turn a profit, today's interview is for you.
Today we sit down with Cameron Magee, owner of avad3 Event Production. He started with a single axle trailer and a few speakers and now his company of 28 does over 200 shows a year nationwide.
Not only is he a great production tech, but he has a sharp business mind. He's navigated how to scale from small weekend gigs to shows with Fortune 500 companies and A list artists, has survived the pandemic when production houses were going under left and right, and does it all with "Honda Civic" level gear.
You'll learn:
- What you need to learn instead of reading more technical manuals
- How to level up WITH your clients (and say not to the bad ones)
- Cameron's two favorite business learning resources
- Why profit matters above everything else

An excellent discussion. Every audio technician running a business should watch this video. As I listened to the discussion, I flashed back to a 1980s course led by the late business consultant, Larry Wilson, who shared this quote: “People buy our product or service, not so much because they understand our product or service, but because they believe that we understand them.”

Thanks a ton, Mike! What was the biggest takeaway from this interview? And as I'm thinking about other guests, what subject matter would be best to cover?

@@MichaelCurtisAudio I personally enjoyed the business talk. Explaining how to make money doing what you love, keeping the customer happy, setting prices and that kinda stuff. But I also just love the idea of sharing experiences (good and bad) for others to learn from as they navigate the same space that we are.

This was a great conversation. I recently made the investment into some wireless, and because it's not Shure or Sennheiser, I'm certainly up against the wall in terms of "sale-ability." I knew this going in, so this was great to listen to other's takes on business models.

Thanks to both you, Michael, and Cameron for the insightful information about business. I could relate to everything discussed. Q: At what point does a business hire a person to be help, either just to bust gear or serve as an A2? IOW, I owe for equipment I’ve purchased to align with customers I’m shooting for, and now there seems to be no money left to hire. I’m also working with my wife and household money.

Do you have someone locally who could "apprentice" under you? Find someone with promising talent, then they get paid to learn. So, they're doing the gig for free, but getting valuable experience? If someone is already a professional, they definitely need to get paid like one, so I'm not asking you to get some who is qualified to work for free. But if money is tight, there are other ways of exchanging value than just cash!

Can you have him back please?...Soon. To talk about more business concepts, gear, and redundancy/things or process to have in place to ensure a smooth (or "flawless") show.
