Get DIMEBAGS Rhythm Tone - Tutorial 

I know tone is subjective, but I don't understand how anyone could dislike Dime's tone.

If Dime was alive he would be Ola's biggest fan...you would bet your ass Dime would spend a lot of time playing with you my friend

I knew Dime when he was 16 or 17 (met him in Arnold and Morgan music Garland TX; sat next to him and said who the f$%@ is this little skinny guy making monstrous tone with his fingers flying across the fretboard) and watched him play in clubs from the beginning of Pantera. I would talk to him frequently about his tone to the point he called me the "tone guy". I was not "friends" with him but playing in clubs and recording around the same time and we talked some. Before he played Randall's (he bought at Spear Music in Mesquite TX) he played a Yamaha solid state. I bought the same amp to mimic his tone and I/It sounded like sh#$. Yes, so much is in the fingers. I did incorporate a Randall RG100ES into my rig paired with a 50w JCM 800 (his advice on two amps one cleanish and one nasty; the Randall was my nasty one). It sounded wonderful; very different from his but his advice worked. Dime was always so nice at sharing whatever he could to help other musicians. He really lived for the music. I also saw Randy Rhoads live (my guitar hero) about month before his death. So many good ones go way to early.

Never realized how in depth these musicians have to go to obtain their own signature tones, especially growing up listening to a variety of metal

I read all his guitar magazine interviews. He was pretty open about what he used. Ola is very close, but don't forget a tweaked Crybaby, a Whammy pedal set to pitch up with the rocker, and his secret, that he didn't completely reveal, some sort of rackmount flanger set to a very minimal amount of depth and speed. He said it was a "very tight" flange on "almost all the time" and "the one secret he wanted to keep". Also, some of those riffs are supposed to be in drop-D and the "harmonics" on 'Mouth for War' was actually done by pressing the strings against the neck pickup, as least in the studio.

Dime would have sounded like Dime on a 3/4 scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles guitar.

To me, Dime was very unique. His approach to playing was very unusual. His choice of solid state, I think, played a huge role in his absolutely supreme metal sound. To my ears, nothing is heavier than Dime. NOTHING.

Sounds weird but thanks to Ola I started listening to Pantera and I can't believe that so many years have passed and I didn't realize how amazing Dimebag is ... now every day I try to play his solos and I hope to upload one of them

Dime's tone was one of the best I've ever heard. It stood out so much, that I couldn't imagine Pantera without that sound of Dime's rhythm guitar.

Anyone who doesn't like Dimes tone should listen to something more in tune to idiots who don't know what true dedication and greatness is.Thank you Ola for keeping it real and his legacy alive. Loved Dimes playing! His use of Texas Swing was insane. It was like taking a portion of Stevi Ray Vaughan's style and turning it to 11 then putting overdrive on top of that.

the editing at 6:15 made me laugh hahahaha. I heard the first artificial harmonic and thought "hmmm note quite. But close." and was given a buzzer sound with a red X to back me up lol. You nailed it the second time though. Love the tone. \m/

I can hear how ISP Decimator cuts noise, leaving a "tail" that sounds like reverb.

I just got an isp decimator g string for my boss for Christmas. He loves it. It puts the hush on his soldano 100 tube head and doesn't suck tone.

I love the old RG100. I have a fuzzy carpet onel and used it for my band's last album. It's just a killer and still gives up the goods for current metal.

Well for me it was still not close. Dime's drive had amazing overtones (almost like octaver before drive) when played squeals or higher notes. I remember when I tried Boss MT-2 (I know what you are thinking about it) it had amazing overtones and reminded Dime's tone. Knowing that MT-2 have pre-distortion EQ built in with bass & hi-mid peaks give me idea that Dime used those EQ with boosting Highs and maybe bass too (or cutting mids). So there's some food for thought.

His tuning to C# is the biggest thing people overlook. That really helps you nail the sound

I heard an interview he did in which he was insistent that solid state overdrive tone sounded better than tube based overdrive, and I agree with him on that. There were some rumors I'd read that he was trialing out a Wizard tube amp in some of his work. By the way, "A New Level" sounded great.

I am learning guitar right now one day I will get a electric guitar and I am dying for the exact cowboys from hell tone thats My favourite guitar tone I prefer it over the later albums guitar tone their good but the cowboys from hell tone just has something special about it

I've been watching your videos for like 10 years now. You somehow make a crushing tone with any amplifier or pedal. I am sure you can get a fucking crushing distortion even out of a single reverb pedal lol.

My father had been chasing Stevie Ray Vaughan’s tone since he was still alive... my dad’s got one of the first 5 Fender SRV Signature Stratocaster which Fender made, the serial number on the neck is from 1981, & it’s fretboard isn’t Pau Ferro like they are now, the neck on his SRV has a rosewood board & now he has specially modified TS9 Tube Screamers, a Vox King Wah, Boss Blues Driver, and one of the Cesar Modded Fender ‘64 Vibroverbs...he finally got SRV’s tone...

Thanks Ola for resurrecting Dime for a couple of minutes, this was pretty refreshing !

dimes tone can be harsh in earphones but through big speakers backed by a heavy bass and huge drum sound its immense, its an assault.

After the noise gate was introduced there was also a very weird metallic fizz at the end of sound when the gate closes. Would be nice to hear a workaround for that. Other than that, wow! You got a really ballsy sound. Ballsier than Dimebag's tone was on record (I think you had more punch and low end than he used) and I preferred your tone for those riffs. Maybe I'm thinking too much of the first records though. Well done Ola. The gain structure was definitely right but I think Dime's tone was a lot thinner on the first albums. That's probably why I prefer your approach to his sound. Good video.

Ola did you flip the Bill Lawrence pickup upside down? Dime always flipped his Bill Lawrence upside down to put the hot rail further away from the bridge..I did it on my Dean From Hell and it had a noticeable change in tone and made it "growl" more.

Dude, you should totally make a video comparison between the Bill Lawrence, Bill & Becky and SD Dumebucker tones with that rig!!! Awesome as always!!!

Another thing about Dime's tone was he didn't scoop the mids like most metal players do. He didn't exactly boost his mids but definitely didn't scoop them. It's funny how most metal players avoid mids like it's the plague. Like if it has any mids then it's not metal. Haha silly! Dime's tone was brutal.

I've got the Randall RG3003 (300 watt version) and let it be noted that baby has a built in noise gate. These current Randall solid state heads are underrated. That was a secret to dimes tone. That cold, yet brutal staccato distortion of those ss amps. Love it or hate it, it changed the world of metal. One of these days I'll spring for an all tube Randall like the Thrasher or, gasp* the Satan. Run them both at the same time and level the neighborhood. You tha man Ola, keep up the good work

I tried the overdrive technique, but I felt using an actual MXR EQ like Dime did was much more accurate. Gave the tone that buzzsaw sound he's known for, while the OD pedal made it a bit too smooth.

When I met Dime, and took a pic with him, he put his arm around me, and had his right hand on my shoulder...I was just thinking.. " HIS PICKING HAND, IS TOUCHING ME!!! " =P...so HAPPY I met him.and he signed, and held my Charvel in his left hand...in the pic!!!!.FAR BEYOND DRIVEN TOUR........and he was with Grover Jackson,...promoting the NEW Washburn Dimebolts, .my buddy bought one, and Dime signed that too.......

Does anybody know what Dime used on the Far Beyond Driven album ? My favorite Pantera record (both musically and tonaly)

he used the mxr in front to boost the mids and scooped the mids in the fx loop, or after the amp. he used gates in the front and back of his amps, and for every amp he had scooped, he had another without any coloring. he didn't record with the Century 200 until Far Beyond Driven. with damageplan, he used a Randall Titan, then a Krank Revolution with a Zakk Wylde O.D.

i'd also like to add that if possible, get a guitar with a 24.75 inch scale neck with 22 frets. The sound really does get warmer and beefier with these necks and will get you even closer.

You just forgot one thing: how he tuned a microtone flat. That is what makes his tone unique and most recognizable.

No idea why people who hate his tone, watch a step by step tutorial on how to make it. Maybe secretly likes it without anyone knowing. And btw his mids weren't so much as scooped as what you think. If you scoop the mids, then there will be a ton of bass and the treble will seem like a very quiet guitar played through a small practice amp that is way too tight. He used like a six band or ten band eq. Kinda like on a stereo or on an older radio amplifier. That's why every note was so clear. Tube screamer, 0 distortion with level maxed and tone to your liking. Band eq pedal to adjust the slightest thing. Noise gate adjusted to level needed. Mic'd straight into a simple 4 channel mixer, like a Mackie or behringer, to the sound emediatly on the board instead of wasting time on your daw and then the final mix on the daw. You can hear the mids are actually fairly present but with the band eq it seems like you still have that, "waspy" sound that seems like a popular term. Listen to any dimebag riff. Easy to hear the notes. Directly sync with the bass creating a unison like tone, kick nicely fills in the thump. I know it's all about "opinion", but come on. ITS A TUTORIAL, WHY ARE YOU HATERS HERE. like honestly you're wasting your own time really. People still will continue to like their desired tone🤷‍♂️
