Start forging right now, today! You can do it. You have the skill. You have the tools... really!
This video takes you step by step through the process of transforming a backyard fire ring into a perfectly capable forge--no special tools needed--and making a fire poker/coal spreader from rebar. The whole process should take about 2 hours, start to finish, and will cost only a few dollars. (It might even be free).
Have you ever wanted to forge metal, but couldn't figure out how or where to start. Look no further, this video is for you. I'll walk you through it and explain everything you need to know along the way. I'll give you alternative ways to do each of the things I show you, just in case you don't have some of the tools or materials I have. For example, I used stones to build up a fire ring forge in my yard, but you could used bricks or even just dig a small trench with a shovel.
At the end, you'll have not only built a forge with common tools, buy you'll also be the proud owner of a rebar coal spreader that you forged yourself!
Follow along and become a smith, or just watch and enjoy the show. Either way, thanks for joining me and I hope you have a wonderful day. Cheers!
Also, just to let you know I recently opened a Patreon account for those who want to support the channel directly, while (hopefully) getting some great additional value...

I saw a guy doing traditional metal work at a living history thing several years ago... the guy had at least fifty different hammers, I asked where he bought them. He said he made them, he said best way to learn is starting by making some of the tools you need and if you need a different size or shape hammer later on, make it..... I asked what he used as his first hammer, he said his neighbor8s ball peen hammer......

I always say “People did this in the 16th century, so why is it that you can’t?”

By the way, the 16th century started on the year 1501 Incase you didn’t know. And yes, I’m aware they forged many years before as well; although the 16th century is when I believe blades truly began to become works of art.

Look into forges made from old truck brake drums, and car wheels. Works great, I know a couple of professional knife makers that use a brake drum forge, and an anvil made from a piece of rail road track.
@tango-bravo
@tango-bravo 7 месяцев назад
I think the number one improvement I could suggest to anyone watching this is to secure the anvil on an even wooden surface, a log or a stump or a big block of wood. That will all you to transfer more of the hammers energy to the metal as you strike it

Blud man, sorry, must’ve been an imposter. The weird thing is I started this channel before I heard about the Fargo TV show on FX... I’m guessing there are a few screen names out there based off of that show. Mine happens to be entirely coincidental… Although if I had known about it, it would have been a good way to get publicity back in 2012. Lol.

I made a forge out of a barrel style grille. I put a hand blower attached to the side blowing under a charcoal bed. No matter how much I crank the blower I can't get the heat I want. Any suggestions? Or should I just get a hair dryer?
@FargoFX
@FargoFX 6 лет назад
Sir Mister I’ve often wondered about those handcranked blowers, it looks so cool when you see a blacksmith using one… Unfortunately I have no expertise in that area. It might have to do with the design of the Forge, in any case I’m guessing a blow dryer would do the trick… Just doesn’t look quite as cool. LOL.

Do you know anything about using a propane tank connected to a chamber that spins with air or something?
@FargoFX
@FargoFX 6 лет назад
Northern Sailor The only propane forge I have any experience with is one I built last winter. That one uses a Venturi style burner, basically just a pipe with a propane nozzle at one end and a few other modifications. It works, but I might need a second burner to get it hot enough for things like Forge welding. What you described sounds interesting though. Let me know if you learn more about it. I’m always interested in the design aspect of this hobby. Especially DIY stuff.

Funny. I also use an 80lb elevator weight. Before using it as an anvil I attached a vice to it so I could easily ground/hold oddly shaped pieces for welding. Only disadvantage is that it has no round edges. Hope to fix that with the next large brushfire I've got to get rid of.....

FYI if youre going to do open pit "forging" like this, just dig a bowl shape into the ground and the wind will naturally funnel down into it, negating the need for any kind of forced airflow. not that it matters really, this ISNT forging, or anything even close to it. go buy a 10$ bag of coal, then you can start actually forging.
