I love this song. The vocal is amazing! But the drum part is pure open fill big groove without cymbals playing heaven! So naked!!
Start at 1:30 if you don’t love the vocal vibe 😀 ... I love it. Then stay with me until the end. It gets bigger!
The drum sound is my drums, not the track! Lots of huge reverb, gated reverb, plate reverb!
Thank you UA! By the end of this track I was playing 16th notes on my high hat with my foot and the groove.
All I can say is ... I guess listening to this song paid off because I did this one in 20 minutes! Having a tempo mapped click helped too thank you Logic Pro X!
It’s not perfect, but I gave it my best!
Give it a real listen to the end!
I would love comments on this one!

Absolutely love Oleta's voice and you couldn't be more right. Only played it once or twice in a Piano bard type joint but it's a non-stop exercise in holding back then hammering down. There really is very little that's easy about this tune to perform it right & with feeling......... and you performed it with both Earl!

Trey B ... thanks Trey! I’m sorry, found this because of someone else’s comment. I appreciate your analysis ... less is more is not easy sometimes. But I have been so fascinated by this groove for years ... I still wonder if it’s programmed. But I proved to myself it’s playable ... I’m just trying to understand the mind of the drummer that did play or program it ... it is filled with glorious space between each note ... I think it’s easier to fill up space then leave it open and uncluttered! Thanks for watching and commenting! 👊✌🏻🤟🏻

3:30...... what an awesome left foot.....one of the best kinda beat I’ve ever seen.... and the song says it all... great lyrics..... you always seem to touch everybody with your song choice and your impeccable drumming skills.... u r the best Earl

Bryan Corey ... the original drummer or programmed drums? And I’m not sure if it’s real or not ... sounded like a hi hat foot sound not a stick so I went for it! It shocked me that I pulled it off! I practice my left foot some, but this groove is about being a one limb groove ... not multi limb, until the feet rule at 3:30. Thanks for catching that one ... thanks for the kind words! 👍🏻🤟🏻✌🏻🥁👊👊👊👊

Bryan Corey ... you know what’s really funny is ... I was going to do it again and my wife had other plans so I stopped. I came back and realized that I nailed the ending except for few optional tom hits instead of snare/tom hits. So I said, well let’s see if it worked ... so this was done in 20 minutes ... only 4 takes ... it was definitely an in the moment thing! Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate it!

Hello Earl, I just saw your video and I am still sitting here with my mouth open and my eyes wide. It is a great art to express a lot of feeling in music and to play little. You can do it.

I honestly love these videos, no overplaying just pure musical drumming the whole way through. Question, would you consider doing video on the stuff like to practice and rudiments? Do you 26 or 40 rudiments etc? I don’t have time to practice them all so I practice 10 core ones (singles, doubles, single paradiddle, double paradiddle, five stroke roll, six stroke roll, flam, flam tap, flam accent and ratamacue). I’d love to hear your take on a practice routine!

Rian Thank for the kind encouragement and feedback. I have done a few videos lessons, they are in my play lists. One thing I do is answer questions by drummers on a show called Ask Earl Anything ... I usually do this show once a month ... I can try to answer your question on my next show? I also do Skype lessons sometimes for people that want a private drum lesson ... but I’ll answer you question in full on my next show ... that will come out in the next few weeks!

You're right the vocals here are beautiful. No way I was skipping straight to 1.30. When you did come in you played with a sparing of the groove that is impossible to get right unless you're totally immersed in the song. I love the hi hat 16ths. Great stuff Earl.
@earldrum
@earldrum 4 года назад
Andrew Nelson drum covers ... thank you Andrew for the feedback ... the original song, where this track came from has a similar sparse groove. I almost think it was programmed because there is not real hi hat pattern until 3:30 when the 16th notes are played with a foot chick sound, not a stick! So I have always wanted to try to play this one because I wasn’t sure it could be done, but I was wrong it’s possible but you have to be deeply immersed in the song! Thanks for the feedback!

This was very different but nice is that reverb that you added to your mix to get that sound its very good
@earldrum
@earldrum 4 года назад
Martin Medrano .... thanks for the feedback! You said it was “very different” ... do you mean the drum part? Or the sound? I know my part was not exact, but I did try to play it very close ... especially the foot driven 16th notes at the end of the song? I’m just interested in what you heard that made it different? Thanks for watching Martin ... I’ll post my other Carpenters video soon!

@@earldrum i meant the sound was different it is not bad its great. I like your playing on the kick drum very nice.

Martin Medrano ...thanks for clarifying! Yes, I used lots of reverb to get the huge drum sound for this sparse groove song! Thanks for watching my friend!
