You have the most innovative uses of the gel plate on RU-vid. Those of us who have watched you from the beginning recognize your techniques when other artists use them. I always mutter, “You got that from Mark!”
@yeatesmakes

That's very kind, and thanks for sticking with me and supporting. If others are using the techniques, then all good. I only ever started this to channel a bit of energy following a tough time, stumbled on a gel plate then it all took a turn! Strikes me the gel plate is a bit of an untapped resource with no real 'tradition' in it's use, so it's a great tool to investigate. if my investigations spur others to do their spin on it then great, what RU-vid was always intended for I think : )

I look forward to each one of your videos, Mark. Your experimentation is ALWAYS fascinating and inspiring. I’ve done some encaustic work before and am going to pull out the equipment again after seeing this. Tiny note on studio safety practises: when heating wax, 0:09 0:09 make sure it’s in a well ventilated area. The fumes from very hot wax are carcinogenic.

It's really inspiring and your videos are amazing. I have made quite a few candles with different kinds of wax, however, and it tends to have a slightly greasy surface, which can also collect dust etc. So I would definitely frame it. Otherwise, it would look pretty cool if you could seal it as it is with that collage and hang it without a frame directly on the wall :-) But then it would probably have to be varnish.

Stunning and brilliant, as usual! The idea of coating in wax, in general, was not new to me. But this technique for achieving the result is SO much tidier and quicker than melting a whole pot of wax and brushing it on ! ! ! I LOVE this! The technique is so very well-suited to your layering methods and style, but totally adaptable to others, as well (rather like more-traditional encaustic technique has always been). I already have ideas for modding this approach, and I can hardly wait to see what else you do with it. The product is gorgeous! I love the subtle interplay of the layers, and I can imagine that IRL the wax adds some amazing depth and surface richness, too. You never did mention or focus on how the NeoColor behaved in the wax. Did it spread? Meld with the surface? I'm really curious to know about that! Thanks again, as always, for sharing your brilliance with the rest of us. You advance the progress of all of us in making art! (Sorry about all the ! ! ! . But I am exceptionally enthusiastic about your last two videos. You continue to raise your own bar, and then neatly clear it with room to spare. Keep doing what you do!)
