The clients i approach have beautiful resorts / properties / amazing looking hospitals etc. half their competitors have one, yet they dont believe they need it. They are like oblivious to the value a video will bring to their establishment. They dont want to spend $400 on a professional video production. Their first reply is we dont have money for all this. The resort clients ask why they should spend on a video when their customers are shooting selfie videos in the resort and posting it free on RU-vid channels and getting 7 figure views. How do you counter this when he says there free videos made by customers (he agrees its amateur quality) but with so many views. Actually there's also the dangerous group of amateurs who call themselves "film production houses" [in reality a homemade mobile phone based YT channel] and barter a free stay to enjoy themselves and in return they will shoot their live experience and post it online (8 figure views !!!). Now what do we do ?
@danielsagona8568
@danielsagona8568 3 года назад
Video production has largely become a commodity business. You have to find clients that NEED high quality work, and want a personal touch. These days anybody can shoot a basic video. This is not easy.

Great video, thank you! Question: If not a website, would not a RU-vid video do in terms of showcasing work?
@garrettsammons

You should absolutely use YT to show your work. A website gives you an extra level of perceived credibility. It’ll help you stand out and attract batter/bigger clients.

How do you go about going from one niche to another? I want to do commercial work, but all I have are wedding films. I also don't necessarily have the time to do free work though, so what's a good suggestion for that so I'm not wasting my time and I'm working towards my goals?
@garrettsammons
@garrettsammons 4 года назад
You have to shoot the work you want. If you want to get commercial work, you need commercial work to show potential clients. Very few people are willing to pay for a service site unseen. The ones that are, are rarely good clients. I always suggest shooting spec work for companies you’d like to get real work from. While it’s still in the category of “free”, there is a chance they’ll buy it or use it. In any case, you get on their radar and showcase the work you can do. Free work in a field you don’t have experience in is the fastest way to getting paid work in that field.

How do you get a wedding reel for a wedding gig if you don't have wedding gigs to get for your wedding reel?
@garrettsammons
@garrettsammons 4 года назад
That’s a great question! I know a lot of photographers that have run into that same issue. They will photograph a fake wedding with models. The models want/get the photos for their portfolios and the photographer gets them for theirs. I’d imagine that’s the kind of thing you can coordinate with other creatives in your area. The nice thing about fake weddings too is that you get all the control. You can setup shots, retake things, etc.

Hey Garrett, sorry for asking you another question -- I'm sure that you're busy and a 1 line response would make my day. After watching your video about making technical and creative proposals and then watching this video, I'm curious how you would approach sending the creative proposal when you're the one who cold emailed a potential client. I understand that if a client were to approach, you the creative proposal would be something that you would do after the RFT is signed. But if you're the one cold emailing potential clients would you show them a creative proposal on the first meeting before the RFT? What would you include in the pitch for a first meeting?
@garrettsammons
@garrettsammons 3 года назад
I wouldn’t put together a creative proposal for a cold emailed client. I may think through a creative idea that you explain in a sentence or two, but cold emailing isn’t as high a return as RFPs.

Good video! Totally agree with the part where you say how companies reach out months later because they remember you. Don't underestimate that and think your time was wasted talking to these people a while ago. That's how I got my best paying work to date (including lasting relationships with important people). Build a high quality portfolio and then send your work out there. Contact companies who might be interested in your work. If you send 50 emails you might get ignored 45 times, get 4 rejections but eventually there will be 1 offer. That's where it all kicks off.

What advice do you have for scheduling shoots when you also have a full time job? How do you balance this?
@garrettsammons
@garrettsammons 4 года назад
Great question, Morgan! It starts with long nights and weekends. A lot of folks juggling FT work schedule their shoots on weekends and edit after work at nights. Same for pre-pro... it’s a slog in the beginning. The more you do, the faster you get at it. The more efficient you are with it, the sooner the balance will shift. You’ve got this!
@MorganKJohnston
@MorganKJohnston 4 года назад
@@garrettsammons thank you SO much for replying! This is so helpful! Do you find that clients are reluctant to shoot on weekends?
@garrettsammons
@garrettsammons 4 года назад
It really depends. Sometimes the client prefers not to be on set, sometimes the creative team likes to take the overtime, and sometimes they don’t want to shift their schedules. Usually, I’ve found it isn’t a big deal.

The worst clients (and these are the ones who are abundant) are the ones who will never say HEY WE AREN'T INTERESTED NOW ETC. I respect the guys who say NO straight away and save me the time. Instead they will ask you for an email. Then they will say they are interested and you should call them a month later. Then a month later they say there's renovation on their property and to wait 2 months. I give him an option to say NO and that its perfectly OK for us. He refuses to say NO, ignores that message and says he is looking at doing it and i should call after 2 months. Then after 2 months, when you call, he asks who you are,,,, and that he lost your email and could you send it again. Then to tell you he received the email he wants 1 month with several calls from your side. Then after he sees the email he says we can do it after a month. Then after a month he gets pissed that your behind his back. I am still perplexed and dont understand what might be the motive behind this behavior. Are they are bottom feeders looking to see how far you will go or....... probably dont have the money for it. Has anyone faced this issue.

Great video and helpful tips, I have one question for you though. How do you reach out to a company or client offering work while also expecting to make a profit off of it? I’ve often reached out and the potential client gets the impression that I’m offering to do free work forever. Any tips on preventing that situation?
@garrettsammons
@garrettsammons 5 лет назад
Solid question. This is where sending an email from a professional address is key! Also, having a website with your reel, completed works and contact information helps a lot. These alone make a big difference in being seen as a professional instead of a hobbyist. Lastly, state your rates of if you are willing to work with a wide range of budgets to meet their needs. This will tell them that they can get what they want, at a price they can afford... which isn’t free.
