This video is the first in a series looking at the modelling 'black arts'.
I talk you through a typical airbrushing setup, how to use it and most importantly, two ways to clean it. All the kit used in the video is somewhere near budget range, so very much affordable to most people new to the hobby.

A very timely video (for me) as I'm considering the purchase of an airbrush. Thanks for the detailed instructions, especially the teardown and clean at the end and yes cleaning the outside is an important part of looking after your tools as any craftsman knows. Great video many thanks.

Really useful video George thank you! I have just recently started using an airbrush and my cleaning pot/holder came with a rather useful tool for cleaning out the nozzle on the airbrush, it’s a needle with a flat cut on it so when you push it into the nozzle and turn it it scrapes the paint and debris out of the nozzle completely. I find it very useful. It also came with a selection of cleaning brushes for the airbrush. Very useful! I would put a link but i don’t think i can, it was on amazon and seems to be the first one that comes up when you search ‘airbrush cleaning pot’, has the extra bits in the main photo. Sorry for long comment but thought you might be interested

I worked for DeVilbiss where we made airbrushes such as the Super 63 and the Sprite. I personally wouldn't recommend using the needle to clean the nozzle out. It only takes a slight bend or "hook" to the tip of the needle to wreck it and the nozzle too. Many a time we had airbrushes sent back to us to repair all because the owner removed the needle and either put it down carelessly or accidentally manhandled it in some way. I remember we had a batch of needles returned to us all because someone had stored them upright in a tube upon which someone else had placed a sheet of paper on the tips of the needles. Every single needle - there was about a hundred of them - was "hooked" all because a sheet of paper was placed on top of them. The whole lot had to be sent over to our factory in Germany to be re-ground. So it's best to take great care when handling the needle and nozzele. I recommend using soft fuse-wire or a sliver of a cocktail stick to clean the nozzle out.

My new cheap airbrush and compressor will be here in a couple of days, but I've also got a Sprite that I haven't used for many years. I've read that they don't work well with modern paints, but does that apply to long established model railway paints like Humbrol, and is it worth, or practical, to start using it again?

Thank you George, I have been thinking about purchasing an airbrush for a while now but have hesitated due to not knowing which would be best. Also never really known how use it or maintain it, so this video has been very useful and I will be purchasing one very soon. 👍

Great video introduction taking away some of the mystery of airbrushes and how simple they can be. The filter in the spray booth is to catch the overspray paint. Have you looked at the fan and motor in the extractor and the build-up of paint on them? Also try putting a little bit of thinners in the airbrush before the paint. I find it helps to get the mixing started.
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, yes to be fair, I usually add thinners first. I think I did it this way around because I was showing the paint before hand. I’ll check the fan when I get home 😅

Well George……. I am pleased you made this video first one reason only!! It has convinced me I don’t need or want an airbrush. I totally agree the results speak for themselves, but I haven’t got the patience to clean it properly and would lose or drop those tiny pieces. So thank you. I will carry on with my paint brushes and convince myself it looks as good. Even if it doesn’t really!
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels 5 месяцев назад
I agree, it does require the time dedication, so it depends what part of the hobby you value the most. For me, it’s getting as good a model as I can, so I take the hit with the time!

If the airbrush was used with acrylics could all the components just be dunked in a bowl of soapy water and given a good scrub? Thanks for such a great, informative video. I'll watch it again if I ever use an airbrush but it certainly shows the advantage of rattle cans.
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels 5 месяцев назад
Yes quite right, but you need to act fast with acrylics, because once it’s dry and set, it’s more work to remove. But I agree with rattle cans, I actually use Humbrol 220 in a can now, but I guess you can’t get every colour in a can
@HenrikLaurell
@HenrikLaurell 5 месяцев назад
Great video! Just don't use tap water as thinner for acrylics. At least use destilled one, or even better real acrylic thinner like tamiya's. I am not sure what's in it, but always works better than water
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for that, I’ve always found water works fine, but ill get some acrylic thinners to compare

What setting do you have the compressor set to? It’s just so much faff cleaning them. I think I’ll stick to airbrushing when I have a set of coaches to do, but otherwise rattle cans or brushes will remain key. Someone needs to invent a much easier to clean airbrush design!
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels 5 месяцев назад
I think I use it at about 30 psi, I keep mine pretty high. But yes, it is a faff cleaning them. I personally feel like the finish outweighs the faff though. Too be fair, I’ve found Humbrol 220 is available in a rattle can, and I use that for the red now!
@NathanielKempson
@NathanielKempson 5 месяцев назад
Comparing your airbrush with mine, I think i need a better compressor. Mine fits in my coat pocket.......
@GWilliamsonModels
@GWilliamsonModels 5 месяцев назад
Wow I’ve not seen them that small, but if it holds enough pressure for a spray, then I guess that’s not an issue
