The unison ghost strokes with the kick is what really made me take notice to the sound of those drums.

I really love the snare sound from Baruk Khazad

To me, Gavin Harrison has an amazing sound overall, but the sound of the snare, man... That's out of this world.

Ive always done tuning by ear. And studio guys would do all this crap to my sound but live settings the front of house would always give me props on the kits sound.

There have been a few times I had to stop an overzealous sound engineer from gaff taping my drums. lol

Bonham's tuning is the one for me.

There's a guy on Instagram right now using that larger than life Bonham sound right now. I can't think of his name at the moment, but I really like what he's doing over there.

There are many characteristics that key you into knowing when you’re listening to Max Roach, but something about the way his toms sound (rather than his playing) are always a dead giveaway.

I know what you mean. There was a time when he was using that Zildjian "mini bell" ride and when you hear it you can tell. Also Jazz drummers tune typically high but sometimes his toms were just sky high.

Bill Bruford’s drums on his self titled album( One of a kind) are it for me.

Very tight and punchy on that one.

i love the challenge of tuning by ear ....since the drums usually need to be tuned before every session- and sometimes my hearing is off due to sinus- etc- .... it's like riding a wild mustang- every single time for me trying to get back in the sonic pocket

I find that it is something that needs practice. When I made this video it had been a while since I had to detune the drums all the way and start from scratch. It was easier when I had a steady gig outside the studio where I played harder and had to tune more often. All excuses aside, it was a good exercise.

Tom Petty, Damn the Torpedoes ... Stan Lynch playing Tama Imperialstars (I believe), with a 6.5" black beauty snare. Listen to "Don't Do Me Like That" - phenomenal drum sound / recording on this song (and that whole album). The toms in the first part of that song/recording are just perfect.

Nice fat snare and you can hear detail of what's happening in the drum part. It's a good sound, but the character of the sound of the snare on the track You Don't Know How It Feels (different album of course) is one of my favorites ever.

Thanks for the insights. Appreciate the ""keep'n it real" tuning technique. Forget the dials, use your ears. Also, where'd you get that Matruvian Man shirt?

I'm glad you like it. As far as the shirt, it was a Xmas gift, I'm not sure where it was purchased.

I love Dejohnette's tuning on the live from Japan with Dave Liebman , Wayne Shorter, Eddy Gomez and Richie Beirach...I had it on DVD back in the day, but you can find it on this here site now.

He always seems to have a snare sound that cracks like a rock back beat and a kick sound that blends better with the upright bass than most. Thank you for the comment. I just took a break to listen to some Jack, it was nice.

Nice tom tuning tutorial, mate. (tongue twister, ha!) I've used a very similar technique for years. QUESTION: Was your lavalier mic the only microphone used to record the audio in this video? If so, do you mind me asking which brand and model it is? I'm looking to buy a decent lav mic to record my dialogue. Cheers! (Subscribed) EDIT: Jim Keltner's drum tuning is always on point.
@DrumTipTuesday
@DrumTipTuesday 20 дней назад
That lav mic is the TASCAM DR-10L and yes, every time you see me out in front of the drums that's the only mic I'm using. And not that you asked but, when I'm on the drums I really enjoy the Xvive T9 in ear monitors. I made a whole video about them HERE: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CrhvOuhypwQ.html

Thank you for posting this :) do you apply lectric shave to the head while it is on the tom or do you apply when the head is off the tom?
@DrumTipTuesday
@DrumTipTuesday 19 дней назад
I just leave it on the drum. I think it's mostly alcohol that evaporates quickly and doesn't damage anything on the drum
@ccoutdoors590

@DrumTipTuesday specifically i didn't know if it works while the head is under tension to take out those divots. To me it makes sense for the head to be loose but I don't know.
