Get Rid Of Multiflora Rose FOREVER!!!! 

I had to get rid of a colony of multiflora rose about as big as what you have there, had to be about 8-10 feet tall in some spots. I used a grass whip to get rid of the smaller stems, then when I was able to reach them, I used either a pair of loppers or the chainsaw to cut the main stems. I then pulled out the main stems and that got rid of most of the plant. Finally, I sparyed the stumps just as you did here. Even so, I still ended up with dozens of splinters and a sliced, profusely bleeding ear coming from a hanging sprout I wasn't paying attention to. There just isn't a fun way to kill those evil plants. We have a lot of that crap here in Virginia.

Good video but a couple things. I've been using a vine and stump killer that has a little brush in the cap. It's worked 100% and the brush is good because you don't have overspray from a spray bottle. The second thing is, unless you're throwing those nice gloves away after you're done with them (Which I can't believe you are) the leather will soak up the weed killer and the next time you use the gloves for something else, the sweat on hands will transfer the chemical to your hands. The multi-flora roses are just crazy where I live.

I used Crossbow (2-4-d ester + Triclopyr) to eliminate the problem weeds. With Honeysuckles growing near a fence, I used a basal treatment much like you show but in an oil suspension, it also stopped stumps from sprouting back. I'm with you on the responsible use of herbicides and not blanket spraying the entire planet. My newest nightmare is cocklebur encroaching from adjoing land. .

Hey John and Beth, I could tell the opening was put on because you didn't have blood running from everywhere. That stuff is nasty. We went 4 wheeling one time and one of those alien demons hooked into my arm and ripped me open good. it took a couple months to recover from that wound. I mow ours with the brush hog and tear it apart as best I can. I can't drive on those spots again for a couple years for fear of running a stub through a tire. Great job on the video John.

I use this same method to get rid of Oriental Bittersweet and especially Tree Of Heaven and it works absolute wonders. I especially like this method to get rid of Tree Of Heaven, which as you probably know is an absolute pain in the ass after you cut down one of those trees. I kept getting dozens and dozens of sprouts along the root lines from those damn things until I found out about concentrated glyphosate from a different youtube video. Anyway, I did a fresh cut on all of the stumps, sprayed that stuff on the fresh cut areas, and also any of the remaining sprouts I could spot and I have not seen any of those awful trees coming back (aside from the fact that they smell terrible as well). Did the same with some huge oriental bittersweet stumps and got the same results. So for anyone reading this and watching this video, this method also works brilliantly in getting rid of woody vines and Tree Of Heaven. The problem I have now is that Garlic Mustard and Japanese Stiltgrass have taken over after getting rid of those vines including a massive colony of multiflora rose that left me with dozens of thorn splinters and cuts. I guess the only good thing here is that garlic mustard and stiltgrass do not have thorns and they are much easier to manage. I hate multifora rose with a passion, but nothing comes close to how much I hate oriental bittersweet. Cheers mate!

It's climbing up inside my bushes. I am disabled and can't get it out. And wild raspberry is also sprouting in my flower beds everywhere.

I caught a thorn from one of them through the side of my shoe while zero turn mowing a fence line. Took 3 months for me to realise thorn was in me under scar. Dug it out and finaly lost the tender spot under my shoe lace area of my foot.

I have 3 acres of woods and I'd say 20-30% is infested with multiflora rose. I hate it so much... it keeps choking my Paw Paw trees and choking out all kinds of other beneficial plants and trees. I'm gonna give this a try and try some spot application of fire from a propane torch too.

Another effective approach is to basal bark spray those huge rose plants in the winter when the leaves are off. Usually you can stick a backpack-sprayer wand in far enough to hit them. Then once those big ones are dead switch to foliar spraying the leaves of the smaller ones during the growing season as you note. There is definitely some "waste" of spray doing basal bark, but if you have a big area to do its much faster than trying to cut your way into numerous big plants to sever the main stems and do cut-stump treatments. Also re garlic mustard, some of the latest research suggests not wasting time pulling it. Apparently over a long period, 12-20 years, it creates a hostile soil microbial environment against itself and strong declines on its own. See presentation on the NY Invasives youtube channel. OMG we have 38 acres of this stuff. Years ago hubby and I did cut and dab the stumps in a 2acre area and it did a good job now we're in are 80s and can't do that any longer so do you know if anyone in SW PA that hires out to help us???
