What helped a bit for me with the lip noise is I apply a small amount of lip balm before I record. This helps that my lips do not stick as much together when I talk. I am still however struggling with tongue noise. What helped for that is I moved my mic so I talk past it instead of into it.

Very helpful as always! I started doing voice over stuff for my church, and was told by a few people that it’s something I should consider pursuing. I instantly fell in love with it. I just had my Fiverr account approved today, and have what I feel is a good first commercial demo. Excited to learn more and hopefully be successful in the field!

Great tips Bill! Also, eating a green apple wedge prior to your session or audition, rinsing your mouth with Biotene Dry Mouth Rinse, and of course constantly sipping on water helps a lot. Thanks for all of the great content!

Great advice! Thanks for sharing your immense experience! 2nd line of defense, though, to me seems to be microphone positioning. Get rid of those close-up-noises. From a distance only spoken word projection remains. A few centimeters often make a BIG difference! EQ-ing can balance loss of proximity effect. Get the right mic to not lose voice character (e.g. large diaphragm). And then, still pre-fader, if you're still not 'clean', there's notch filtering. Editing and recording post-production comes laaast. In post-production there's also many ways to mitigate or eliminate noises without really CUTTING them out which can lead to a whole bunch of other issues (you'll at least have to fade all the cuts). Stick to non-destructive editing first to retain all options and be able to compare different solutions.

I was planning on asking about all of this a couple days ago in the chat, but figured you'd already done some videos on this. All great to know!

Thanks for the awesome video. I’ve been practicing this technique, not just for VO but for my livestreams and it works very well.

Just starting out. And, paused recording my reels as I’ve been a little frustrated. My daughter loves the game “hear the mouth noise”, yet there’s still too much and I’ve been working with some of your precious advice, yet I guess old habits die hard🤣1. I’m hearing my “recording voice”as my 8 year old calls it (working on my own voice:)2. Those mouth noises persist! Today, I’ll redo my studio with heavy duty soundproofing/and acoustic treatment and record a bit with all these great ideas! I’m determined to finish my Fiverr account with samples/reels, before end of month:), thanks to you:)))

Thank you Bill for rehashing this vile and vexed by-product of vocal communication (pretty harsh)! Nothing has truly challenged me more (and got in my head) than this issue. Quite frankly, at one time I stopped recording because I was so frustrated with myself. However, you presented the solution! All I had to do was be patient with myself. Through it all there have a few bumps in the road. I continue to push through it and it's easier now. Sincere THANKS!

@lovesvoiceover going really good, actually. A lot has happened in a year, and I am loving my VO journey. I have met a lot of new people and taken a lot of classes and coaching. Dewees had really helped with his videos, and I still keep up with a lot of them. Started making money this year with a few clients and hopefully next year i will go full time!

Unfortunately, you can't purchase Adobe Audition. You have to pay for it monthly.

Thanks for the video Bill! I narrate audiobooks and I also edit audio for audiobooks and most plugins are unable to accurately take care of mouth noise without causing too much destruction to the audio. So, I manually remove mouth noise and can spot it a mile away with the spectral tool in Audition. I love it!
@joewhj
@joewhj 2 года назад
what is the Audition tool?
@learnaudiobasics
@learnaudiobasics 2 года назад
Hi @Joe Bill Within Audition, you have the spectral view that is essentially the “tool.” I worded it as such because it allows you to go in and visually see the portions of the audio where the clicks, pops and other noises occur, just as Bill mentions. Once inside with a file loaded up, you’ll have to select the spectral view in Audition. The view allows you to have a few different selectors for grabbing the bad audio. A simple edit selector, a paint brush style that can be sized up or down, and a rectangular style selector. Once you select the portion of audio you need to adjust, hit the delete key and it’s gone! When I return to my station I’ll post the way to select spectral view.

@@joewhj Ok Joe, when you have Audition open, up in the top menu bar, under the "Favorites" dropdown, select the "Show Spectral Frequency Display (Shift + D)" button on the left. It looks like a waveform image, but more condensed in appearance. Hope this helps you out. Let me know if you have any other questions. I would be happy to help.

Just started podcasting our tabletop roleplaying game, just for fun. Damn man, I make so many weird noises subconsciously. I can hear my lips, my tongue, my cheeks, i smack just before starting a sentence and I scratch my beard. Who knew.

I have pretty good control over my tongue/lip-based mouth noise, but unfortunately the majority of my mouth noise comes from soft-palate-based clicking. It's a pretty rare condition from what I understand, but impossible to prevent - and not even RX8 catches it, so I pretty much can only spectral-edit them out.
@NateBarham

I have this as well. It’s quite frustrating to hear so many “get rid of mouth noise” tricks that simply do not work-and here’s the key-for that particular sound. The advice is great for everything else, but when I first got started with VO, I thought I was losing my mind/hearing things. But no, it’s almost always a soft palate click that cannot be avoided without truly contorting the way I say a word into something that would never EVER work when taking on a character voice.

Try to spectral analyze frequencies, then apply notch filter to mitigate/eliminate.
