In case you’re still young and your lower back is great: it takes years to ruin your lower back through bad posture and bad/no exercise. But once accomplished, your life is hell. You lose your job, your hobbies, your joy, everything you love doing. And it might take double or triple that time to recover, even with pristine movement habits and suitable exercise. Take good care of yourself. If you’re older and your back is already ruined: hope dies last. Always keep looking for ways to improve. Mistakes are a natural part of learning. Setbacks happen. Keep learning, discovering, improving. Learn from mistakes. Find your pain triggers and injury mechanisms, replace them with better choices. There’s people who got it worse, e.g. multiple vertebrae fusion surgery gone wrong, but they are making progress towards recovery too. You’re not alone.

I sit and slouch a lot and am in my 60’s, I feel I’ve kept my back pain free by regular stretching sessions, intuitive stretching.

That's right, Grow Everyday! Sounds like Tony performs some Recess Breaks. I tried replacing our couch with beanbags for a month. We loved it but problem was so did the pets.

At age five, they start putting you in chairs (public schools) and from that point on the muscles in the back of your legs start shortening. By the time you are an adult, you can no longer squat with your heels on the ground. Countries without chairs have old folks who can still do this with ease, and their incidence of back pain and degeneration is small. You see ads for ergonomic chairs, but there is no such animal. There are simply bad chairs and worse chairs.

I'm in high school and I tell everyone this... few people listen and those who agree can't do anything about it... then I'm weird for taking my shoes off and sitting on the floor during class. Our "ergonomic chairs" are just curvier chairs than normal which no natural human spine can conform to. Insanity!

@@ohnree4110 The insanity doesn't stop there, and it's important to point it out each time you are aware of it. Constructive changes can happen when awareness spreads. The real challenge arises when we consider what to throw away, and what to keep.

You have to keep the bowl of water on your head from spilling. This straighten your neck & throws shoulders back. (?)

You've got the whole weight of your body on the bottom of your feet for hours, then you have a nice sit down on a seat in a single position that you can't change very much once it gets uncomfortable, and reduce the weight pressing on the bottom of your feet to only being the weight of your legs. Then move your feet around awkwardly trying to get them comfortable...

Honestly, that's such a simple solution, just don't have any chairs in your home! So many unhealthy habits can be treated similarly. I.e. When you furnish your house, or e.g. when you buy your food, you can easily make that conscious decision. Whereas during the day you decide most things subconsciously, like sitting down.

Bang on chairs are real hazard. Trust me! My SI joints are out place from too much night shift. I can’t sit any more. It’s over. I can stand and Lie down. I’m pretty fit too. I now stand at work or pace, sit no more than 10 to 15 mins for essential computer work. I’m chucking in my job in... no shit!

I love the irony of a man espousing the hunter gatherer lifestyle doing a Santander Assett Management training course. And raving about the back benefits of hunter gatherer life. Easy to know this man has never worked in a manual job for a long period.

Did you even listen to the full conversation? He used to be in the army and was a PT at a high level for many years (not to mention the fact that he's currently running the length of Great Britain barefoot). I would say he knows plenty about physical movement and exertion. He explains in the conversation that when he used to work as a pilates instructor he would help to heal people of their back injuries but that was not getting to the root cause of what was giving them the back injuries in the first place (sitting at desks for prolonged periods, sedentary lifestyle). That's why he got into workplace practices to minimise these issues. His ethos is that the closer we can get to the movements / resting positions of our ancestors (ground-living, squatting, avoiding compromising footwear) the less likely we will be to get these all too common injuries. The reality of the modern world is that we cannot go back to being hunter-gatherers but if we can live in a more natural way it would benefit us all

@@SanTelmo1981 You equate running the length of GB barefoot with a manual job, I dont. Imagine a world where all the people who did do manual jobs gave them up to go running barefoot across the land and see how that works out.
@domzbu

Mick Hurley victim mentality. You’re essentially saying those with manual jobs can’t benefit from any of this content. And btw running 30 marathons in 30 days barefoot is probably somewhat tougher than the vast majority of manual labour jobs. Come back with another argument if you must. Or listen to the interview with an open mind.

Having kids is natural. Supersonic jets and skyscrapers, not so much. If you want to complain about wrecking the planet you need to find a better target than babies.
