Great video man, I am wondering when bouncing a cob light for the book light, will you use a soft box to bounce it to the bounce board, or will you just use the reflector dish to bounce it to the bounce board?

Thanks, Brady, the point about facing the light AWAY from the set seems so obvious once you say it... spent a lot of time flagging and draping duv over the setup because that didn't occur to me! :-) By the way, one tip that you might want to share for someone that is stuck wanting to booklight but there's no room, is using a mafer clamp on a C stand and using two arms on one C stand, for a super small and compact book light for small spaces... you basically have two 4x6 sheets and then a small light. I use unbleached to bounce into, and grid to shoot through.

Hey man great video, I had a question. To me the softbox looks like the smoother rolloff because the contrast between shadows and highlights looks less pronounced in this image. In the booklight image the shadows look stronger. Have I misinterpreted rolloff. The booklight image seems more appealling because it appears less flat but wanted to check my understanding of rolloff

Professor Brady can you please conduct a lesson on proper exposure using the Blackmagic system? I'd be very willing to buy a course (Provided it's under 100$). If you could make a genre specific(preferably horror) set of tutorials which includes all that an independent filmmaker would need (lighting. exposure, color grading etc) to make their first indie film, that would be amazing. I said horror because there's actual money to be made in that genre. Money isn't everything but we need a source of income to finance our passion. I'm still saving up to buy a BMPCC4k, I'll hopefully save enough in a couple of years. Thank you, a reply would be much appreciated!

Useful video. Just want to point out that if you have a big enough space you don’t really need to use a book light with that second diffusion layer. Simply use a very matte surface to bounce off (like muslin fabric). Give it enough distance and there will be no hot spot on the muslin - hence no real need to soften further. The other advantage of using a straight bounce is you don’t have light spilling around the edges of your front diffusion layer which can be a pain for wider shots. Personally I use 9 metres of muslin wrapped into a giant cove around my subject… if you are able to fill it evenly with 2 or 3 wide spread panel lights it’s magic.
