If you ask anyone in the Bay Area about the hyphy movement, chances are their eyes will light up, their heads will start bobbing, and their bodies will start moving uncontrollably to whatever Mac Dre or E40 song begins playing in their imaginations at the mention of the word. Coined by artist Keak the Sneak to mean hyperactive, "hyphy" is a lifestyle that integrates the Bay Area style, dance, music, and slang of the late 1990s through the early 2000s. As a culture that prides itself on ignorance and having a good time, most people associate this movement with partying and paraphernalia. What’s often forgotten is the oppressive atmosphere that led these Baydestrians to resort to “going dumb.”
