This evening I walked outside and watched one bumble bee pollinate almost every flower on 6 cucumber and 3 cantaloupe plants. And the flowers it skipped it went back for. Super cool.

I love bees as long as they are not flying around me. I once was stung by an entire nest of honey bees. So glad I was not allergic. You should look into the mason bees as well. We have them in Texas too. I have heard it is really easy to make nesting areas for them. They are big but then so are the bumble bees I have seen. I still remember the first bumble bee I spotted in Texas over 20 years ago - it was at least one inch long and seemed so heavy it had to fly low to the ground. - Heidi

The majority of the pollinators I see in our yard and garden are bumble bees. They are a very welcomed addition to our garden! They are incredibly calm, we have never been stung by one before (unlike honey bees and yellow jackets in our area, that are more apt to sting if you get too close to them). They often are happy to allow you to be right next to them as they are visiting the flowers in our garden, even sometimes landing on you for a moment of rest before happily buzzing away. I love the idea of having an actual hive to help protect them and will now add this to my bucket list. One reason I've never gone to the point of having bee hives is because I'm not interested in bothering the bees for honey, but this non-invasive idea for these pollinators sounds great. Thanks John!

Another reason I plant many flowers all around my land is to keep beneficial insects such as bees happy, my way of giving back for all the good things they're giving us.

INTRUDER ALERT, INTRUDER ALERT, lol! Wow John, you just gave me a flashback down memory lane! The arcade game you were referring to was, BERZERK. It was manufactured by Stern in 1980. I was only 10 at the time, and living in the Miami suburbs. I remember the 7-Eleven corner store in my neighborhood had one, and I was hopelessly addicted to it. We used to cruise the neighborhood construction sites on our BMX bikes, searching for soda bottles just to play this game.

I guess this creates a whole new spin on Shakespeare’s old adage “To Bee or not to Bee” and now we will really get things buzzing by adding in “Oh but what kind of Bee to be?, what kind of Bee, be me?” Also, there is a way to make mismatched workers and Queen bees become friends. I believe it is by adding a drop of foreign material on their backs and putting them together...they will lick it off each other and become friends....I am not sure if this exactly right and will verify when I get a chance...I saw it on the documentary “More Than Honey”. Now, back to watching your awesome videos.

JudkinsJourney You're right. I cringe when John makes sweeping generalizations. I think it hurts his message which basically is: Grow your own food. Grow it to be as healthy as it can be. With as little impact as possible.
@TheMusachioedBrony
@TheMusachioedBrony 9 лет назад
I can rewind and listen again, but that is not what I heard him say at all. The message I got was that in traditional corporate type beekeeping, the idea was to maximize profits and take all the honey, sell it commercially and feed the bees sugar water. I live in northern Chicagoland (ie the northern suburbs). When I was little it was my mothers mission to show us kids as much as she could of where our food really came from. She was always finding these tours-don't know how-and I remember once going to a big bee farming area. I must have been about seven, and I got so upset when I found out all the honey was taken out of the hive and processed and sold. The farmer told me not to worry-he said they fed the bees sugar water over the winter, and the bees loved it. So it did used to happen-I saw it with my own eyes!! I think now things are changing, and small bee keepers handle things differently. So don't be too hard on John-he has done a lot of good, and he has been such a huge inspiration for me.
@JJourney1
@JJourney1 9 лет назад
Yeah, still don't like sweeping generalizations like that. Commercial beekeepers are one thing, but that's not who he's talking to, he's talking to the average "Grown Your Own Greens" backyard-growers.

I didn't realize those were different varieties of bees...I guess we have quite a number of the same types out here in the mid west. I thought that the green one and the carpenter bees were flies! If they are being fed sugar, are they being fed fructose sugar (fruit sugar, corn syrup sugar ) .... and corn (BIG CORN video) shows that corn and corn sugar depletes trace minerals in the body, and that it is used in softening lean muscle, and putting more fat into the muscles, for juicier cows, but literally is killing the animal with weakness (starvation). Bees are in a sugar-high (sugar is cousin to cocaine, one molecule difference, same for hops is same genus cousin to marijuana). Bees need diverse pollen food, not single orchard fruit trees. They are getting protein, enzyme, amino acids, sugars deficiencies. The bees need to be rotated amongst various crops, not planted on a single harvest product.

@freedomdove
@freedomdove 8 лет назад
John, did you really order your hive box and the bees from the UK link in the description? I wouldn't think that it would be easy or even possible to have bees shipped from overseas to an individual. Where did you get all of that and how much did it cost to get it shipped to where you live? Also, if that front door on the bee box is a one-way-out-only door, how do the bees get back in themselves? Tonight I accidentally disturbed/unburied several hibernating bumblebees (it's not time for them to come out yet here). They are in one of my unused container beds in the back corner of my lot. It's one of those big black fabric beds that you've showcased in another video. I had no idea they were in there or I would obviously had *not* disturbed them! I hadn't done anything with the bed for a couple years since trying to grow sunflowers (in a place that didn't get enough sun), and there were ground-cover plants (weeds to most people) growing in there since that time. I was digging them out today and transplanting them elsewhere so that I could have a space for some shade-loving wildflower seeds (for the bees--lol). I slowly got about halfway through this bed with my weeding tool and I looked down and saw a big bee crawling around on the dirt. I was shocked. At first glance I thought it might be a carpenter bee since I've had them in my eaves for several years until I fixed the problem and they had seemingly moved on to better wood opportunities. I was looking around to see where it might have fallen from. Lol. But I also see bumblebees once in a while so I knew they were around the area. It didn't take me long to realize they were bumblebees, but at that point I had no idea that bumblebees will burrow into soil to hibernate. It was undeniable because I stood there watching 3 more bees emerge from the potting soil. I guess I never really thought about where they go in the winter (zone 4 here). I came inside to do some research and realized that they had picked a perfect spot to hibernate. My neighbor's shed is causing the bed to be on a north side, which is where bees hibernate in the ground. They chose my big fabric bed because it was filled with potting soil instead of the clay soil that the bed sits on. It's a perfect place for their hibernation. And I disturbed it. Doh!!! Anyways, I don't suppose they need any kind of box since they've obviously been doing this for a few years and may have some kind of summer-time hive elsewhere, but since there are so few of them I thought it might be nice to set up a summer home for them back at that corner of the property. Do those hive boxes sell in the US or would we need to order from the UK site?

@mannylenz5288 9 лет назад
Yeah, it's Mittleider, but you can use organic ferts. In the long run though, I think it's better to concentrate on building rich soil. I think that long term Mittleider is pushing salts into the ground under the beds, and you end up still having to import fresh sawdust. OTOH, growing anything at all is a positive, so starting using Mittleider, building compost, and upgrading beds as compost becomes available is a viable option.

While John does a GREAT job in presentation, he does tend to talk TOO much! I would suggest getting to the point and do the demonstrations, be CAREFUL how you handle the bumblebee nest, and cut back on the excessive talking. Too much extra talking going on. My opinion.
