In this video you will get to know Alcântara, a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of São Luís, in the state of Maranhão. A city full of ruins, beautiful walks, breathes a lot of history, wonderful cuisine. We show you what we did in 2 days in Alcântara, where we stayed, where we ate and the tours we did with our guide Caroline from @alcantaraturismooficial. Its estimated population in 2014 was 2,652 inhabitants. It has an area of 1457.96 square kilometers, part of the territory of the municipality is located on the island of Livramento, where the seat of the municipality is located.
The area of the current municipality was inhabited by Tupinambá Indians, in a village called Tapuitapera. The French settled in the early 17th century and were later expelled by the Portuguese. The village was elevated to the town of Santo António de Alcântara in 1648, having been the seat of the Captaincy of Cumã. During the colonial period, it was an important agricultural and commercial center. In the 19th century, the city entered a period of decadence, and the architectural collection of its Historic Center, listed by IPHAN, in 1948, remains as a testament to its golden period.
The city is also well known for its sweets. The feast of the Divino Espírito Santo ("Feast of the Divine") is quite widespread in the state, as there are approximately 15 days of feast during which liqueurs and sweets are served free of charge.
Access to the city can also be done by ferry system, which connects the city of São Luís to the port of Cujupe, in Alcântara, as well as by smaller boats and catamarans departing from Praia Grande Pier, in downtown São Luís. .
