Thanks for being honest telling future tourists prior visiting Cambodia. Just remember! regarding safety it not only Cambodia that crimes and other criminal behaviors that you need to aware. Sometime the safest place that you live can hit you as hard as what being said about Cambodia. Be vigilant and safe travel.

Thanks for the video, I lived in PP a few years. I actually never had anything stolen in 4 years, so it's not that bad but better be careful. Regarding the $ notes in PP nowadays you don't need to have a fresh out of the bank notes, they will take any dollar notes. But not in the countryside they still want almost perfect notes. Best.
Most stores here still do not take torn notes or old worn out notes. I currently live here and they will not take any that even have a small tear in them.
Yes that’s true. The one’s tend to get worn the most and I’ve had a couple that I thought might not pass and they were OK. But you’re right, never have I seen anyone accept a torn bill.
I was hesitant about visiting Cambodia, but then I saw a number of videos on kampot, kep & SIEM Reap & thought it was worth a visit. Haven't seen much on Phnom Penh, but after seeing this I'm gonna scratch it from my list. Too many options out there to settle for less. DaNang, Saigon, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, the islands, K.L...not to imply that there is no crime in these places, but less so. 👍
I have lived in phnom penh for over 5 years. I have a system of how I pay for things. For Places that accept credit cards I use Credit cards. Places that advertise 1.00 =4100 riels I use dollars. Markets, restaurants, and street vendors I use riels. If I get bill larger then 20.00 I will exchange so that I have less worry about being stuck with damaged bills. Most money changers give an average of 4070 riels per dollar. If I take out 1000 US dollars I will pay 17.00 USD in fees but My bank reimburses 10.00. If I exchange my US dollars for riels I will end up with a 10.50 profit
I've moved to Canada for a while. some of the things you have mentioned, I didn't even notice them. However, I have been practicing them since I was young. Yes, everything you have brought up is correct about Cambodia, in my opinion.
I think you’re missing one point with the money - it’s better to exchange your dollar notes into Khmer riels to get full exchange rate ($1 = 4100 or 4200 riels). If you spend your dollar note in a normal market place/shops, they will not give you changes according to exchange rate so $1 equals 4000 riels instead (so for $10 you’re already losing $0.25). If you want to get full exchange rate for your dollar bills I suggest go to marts or shops those are not family owned. Thanks for the appreciation you’ve shown during the visit! Great video!
I've been working between Cambodia and Vietnam since 1999 & you hit all the key points,.. except one. Many expats like to rent 250 cc motorcycles (and above) to get around, which I've done myself for many years. If you do this, always make sure to have a good supply of $1.00 bills with you. If you are stopped by the police in PNH for anything; the main thing they want is a pay-off. Don't argue with them and don't make a scene as more police will come (who also want payoffs). They are happy with just a $1-2 dollar "Tip",.. but they don't give change if you only have $20's or a $50's!
@@iamjohnsaboe No problem & it comes from gaining experience, in the expensive way. Doesn't really matter if you're on a 50 cc or a 650 cc; while your are in PNH: you're still a "Barang" (foreigner/white person) on a motorcycle and a means of some extra income for them. Best advice that I can give is to obey the traffic laws very rigidly (even though everyone else around you is not) and don't give them any reason to stop you.
I first went to Cambodia in 1996 on an official trip. The water front in those days was filthy with piles of stinking rubbish and beggars. The electricity supply was terrible. Everyone had generators banging away. Going to the seaside involved going in a convoy because the Khmer Rouge were still active. In 1998 I returned to Cambodia and stayed and worked till 2018. The country has developed, still has problems, but is on the way up.
I was here in 2017. I was bothered by the double pricing in the city and it took up a lot of energy. This is not mentioned in the video. Thanks anyway for a good video.
