I call it “falling forward enough for the body to take over.” I learned it on my own when an autoimmune disorder attacked the nerves in my legs and made them pretty useless. This method also works best when I don’t sit in a place where my knees end up being higher than the seat of the chair (or maybe better stated as higher than the midpoint my hips?). So low chairs, deep sofas, short benches, etc. can take a lot more power than this move can generate.
@HT-Physio
@HT-Physio 3 месяца назад
I agree - the dimensions of the seat is an important factor, it completely changes the movement needed to get up

have been using the getting up portion for quite awhile and try to teach my wife who is having a lot of difficulty with pain post knee replacement surgery 11 months ago. Now I can use it for sitting down. I had a different technique for my wedding folks when photographing. Because most people are "floppers" and I wanted to keep the head forward of the tummy I used my normal standing pose of one for forward (which depends on the direction of the body being posed) and weight on the opposite leg/foot. So I found that by asking the subject to stand with the rear leg touching the chair and then to sit "straight" down, the problem was solved. Not quite as good as this method but something anyone could do when shown.

I'm 62, with arthritis in both knees, both hips and my neck and this demonstration is using the type of chair I can usually manage. My problem is getting out of much lower seating, like a settee. I also can no longer reach my toes to cut my nails and I struggle with bottom wiping too. Any tips here would be very helpful as I'm fiercely independent and would really like to remain so for as long as is possible. Dignity is important to we older folk.
@lienbijs1205

It is for arthritis very important to keep moving, it will keep your joint more souple and you need to strenghten your muscles in order to support the jonts. Without moving a lot and gain muscle strength your perspective will be much less good. For cleaning your bottom you can buy a bidet what you can connect to the toilet, or a simple toilet shower can do the job. Keep moving, make a schedule, you are much too young to live like an elderly!
@DavidSmith3750
@DavidSmith3750 3 месяца назад
Get yourself a bidet you need elec ran to by your toilet look at many on u tube. As you scroll look they will come to you huge discounts. Some flush automatically. Have heated seats warm water filters and self cleaning blue light for disinfectant. Worth every cent Costco has handicapped toilet bidet built in. 1/2 Price that I paid. Save. $$$$$$$. No toilet paper. Save power not use heated blow dryer comes with bidet. Have. Men’s cotton handkerchiefs to pat dry.

Two things at 4:25. One, use the chair in front for balance only. Touch it with your fingertips, not with your claw hands. Two: when you go down and slow down, you’re adding resistance. I have learned that resistance is key. If you do everything in extremely slow motion, you are tensing the muscle and adding to what you were doing very much. The longer you take easing back down to the chair the more you’re getting from that exercise.

Right! You have to make sure that the chair is behind you before you sit back down. It wasn't, and I fell to the floor in the restaurant last year. I now reach behind me first to make sure it's there in place. Your moves are for thinner people. Not for larger people like myself, or seniors with balance or mobility issues.

Happened to watch this with the sound off. Because of that, I saw what you were doing in a unique way. I took screenshots of the arrows you show, makes all the sense in the world. Now I’ll watch again with the sound engaged. I’m sending this to others who I hope will subscribe too. Hope we can all get to the place where furniture design will be assistive. It’s okay to modify furniture placement. Big substantial furniture is up against the wall. Doing what? Move the couch to the center of the room. Take a photo of your living room. Diddle with moving things, safety and comfort, and assistive placement. How can we do this better? In your room, the white table to your left could be placed chair side to be used as an assistive lift. I have a few walkers, one has wheels. I have a piece of attractive wood used to make a shelf. Use small plant pots, but if needed, I can remove easily. Change it around often. I may get more because it’s a substantial grip which helps me return to a standing position. The shelf is heavy enough to stay in place, but I give it some grip with rubbery shelf paper. When I need a walker, just lift the shelf off. Walkers are actually a thing of beauty, well-balanced and rugged. Not useful in a closet, bring them out to re-purpose.
