@@vell2994 Have you made any progress on this? Sadly Rocky died of cancer last year, but in his last half a year, he was so cuddly... He started doing that trust throw that you see in the funny dog videos, where they just fall backwards on the owner. I never taught him that, and considering his size and the fact he used to put some muscle into that throw, it could be a bit painful, but I still loved it so much! He came a long way, so there is definitely a way to tach them to be affectionate. I wonder how was your journey?

I wish I had seen this when I rescued my dog 4 years ago. She is so aloof. I gave up on having a loving companion and concluded that gave a homeless dog shelter, food and love. I never thought to train her to be affectionate. This is a remarkable video. Thank you.

Thank you for giving me hope. We adopted my dog at 2.5 years old. We actually got her two hours before my childhood dog of 14 years passed away. I am a very physically affectionate person, and I snuggled my Max all the time. But Lucy doesn’t like to be snuggled. She dramatically jumps away like we’re trying to crush her or something. And when I extended my leg on the couch and accidentally touch her, she gets off the couch and looks at me like I just threw her out in the rain!! I have cried over this dog, and her unwillingness to cuddle. I knew I could train her to do things like DPT and maybe that could be good enough, but I didn’t want to have to ask every time, and reward her every time with food. I want her to want to cuddle me. But after this video, I’m holding onto the hope that it won’t always be like that. I won’t always have to ask, and hopefully, eventually, she’ll just do it because she wants to. And I will be so very happy when that day comes. So thank you. Thank you so much for that hope.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment Emily, it has really inspired me to make another video, talking about out progress, and responding to it properly, but it will take me a couple of weeks, as I need to finish a client project first. In the meantime, what I can say is don't give up. Things have improved for us, and while Rocky is not really a lap dog yet, he no longer walks off when I come for a cuddle! And that is a massive win, as it was breaking my heart! And more and more often he comes and asks for cuddles himself, or just lies at my feet and use me as a pillow. :) So we are moving forward. I know how you feel exactly! It's so hard to feel rejected - even if it is just by a dog. Or even more so if it is by a dog, as they are 'supposed to' love us unconditionally! It sounds like your dog might need a bit of time to settle in and feel safe in the new environment. Even if your home is most loving and caring, Lucy's previous experience might have affected her adversely. Do you know what happened to her before you adopted her? One other thing to check as well is - could she be in pain? If she has some underlying issue that causes pain, cuddling would be unpleasant for her. Other than that just take things slowly and be patient. I firmly believe that once they are shown that affection can be nice, they can learn to enjoy it, in the same way as they learn to play with toys. You have to be patient, if Lucy is not forced into it, but rather gets a lot of praise and reward when she does it, she will develop a positive association and a habit. Maybe Lucy and Rocky will not ever be super cuddly, but we just need them cuddly enough for the bond to develop between us. Good luck, and I promise I will make another video on this topic. :)

Thank you, I am going to try this! My puppy came from a shelter, and his first couple months of life I don’t think he got any human affection. He’s now 4 months old. He likes to be around me, follows me from room to room, but isn’t a fan of pets or cuddles or loving. It makes so munch sense now, that maybe he just needs to learn to enjoy affection. :)

Aww, it has really worked for me. :) Rocky has become so much more cuddly. He now sleeps in bed with us and hangs o it with me on the sofa in the evenings.

I have 2 dogs. My Jack Russel (Brandy) has been a cuddler since she was a puppy. And now at almost 14 she REALLY loves cuddles. However my 2 year old cross terrier (Whisky) sits as far away from family members as possible. Only cuddles with Brandy and the cat (Vino). I’ve tried so many things but your trick seems to offer hope. Im definitely trying this from tomorrow. Thank you for the lovely video. Your dog is so handsome.

I came across these comments and I’m so glad to know that I’m not the only one in this predicament. My Maltese / poodle is 15 years old, never liked to cuddle. If she’s laying on my bed and I walk in the room , she jumps up and leave, yet during the day she follows me from room to room. She’s such a teaser, when I tell her, mommy wants to pick you up, she just runs away 😊. I give up.

My female shepherd hates being touched or petted. She gets up and goes to another room if we try it. I'll be honest, it made me so sad that I began to get depressed.

I know the feeling. But honestly, it gets better. Rocky now, at almost 4 years old comfortably hangs out with me on the sofa, sometimes even for hours. It's hardly ever out of pure love, usually he asks for treats or food in return, but he also has moments when he just forgets that he should be paid and falls asleep next to me. Every now and then he comes and lie down next to me because he feels like it, without asking for anything in return. That is more rare though. :) We have worked out a balance too. I have accepted that he is just not that cuddly. Perhaps it's all that fur getting him too hot. Or perhaps it's just not in his nature. He shows love by lying down somewhere he can see me and staring at me lovingly. He got used to some cuddles, so he meets some of my needs for affection. I think as he gets older the lines will blur even more. Would I love a dog that cuddles? Yeah, 100%, at some point I will probably adopt a dog from a shelter. It will be the cuddliest dog they have ever had. ;p That's my criteria. But for now Rocky is still too much of a handful to get another dog. Do I love the dog I have? Totally. He is a loyal and loving companion and I would not give him up!

My GSD girl was not affectionate as a puppy, at all. She hated being held and would prefer to bite than to be petted. I thought she would never like people like that. As she got older, though, especially after we taught her not to puppy bite, she began enjoying belly rubs. Then head scratches. Then she would hop up on the lounge and lay with you, without trying to bite and play like she used to. Literally as I write this she ran into the room, jumped up next to me and shoved her head behind my back. Now she's licking my feet (gross, but it's the thought that counts) while she enjoys a cuddle. Puppies are way more likely to want to play than to cuddle, as it turns out. Don't give up on them, keep making cuddle time a good experience. Catch them while they're sleeping and pet them. Don't force them to cuddle, it will have the opposite effect.

this is such a great piece of advice! I wish I knew all that to start with, it would have saved me a lot of heartaches. I can see a massive improvement in Rocky too. He loves scratches now. :)

Thank you so much! Our first dog is very affectionate. We got her a sister, little 2 month old Pomeranian. This Pom HATES affection. Needless to say I was devastated, I thought she really was going to hate us forever until I saw your video. We have started training her with affection and we have started to notice a slight change in her behavior now. I understand now if we want her to be affectionate then we have to teach her

Aww, we can’t get Rocky out of our bed at night those days. :) which is kind of what I wanted, but not really, as he takes up a lot of space! :) :) The sofa cuddles are amazing though, he is like a little teddy bear those days. Keeps us really warm in winter.

THANK YOU i feel like this was the first effective training solution that ive come across so far!! ive wanted a dog for so long and when we finally got one (hes 7 months now) he does not enjoy cuddles. It really made me sad and almost desperate to get his affection lol I will definitely be trying this. My only question is will my dog want to rest his chin if the cloth is not there/will the cloth delay the cuddling process? is there a way to do this without the cloth?

Thank uou so much! I was sure I was not the only one. It is so disheartening! And really upsetting. I don't think the cloth will slow ot down. I only used it for a little bit - I think it just helped him to have a target spot. Once he has learnt the command the towel went away Nd he knew to generalise it.

Thank You so much for this video.. We just rescued a puppy from a shelter who was found on someone's yard with her siblings. She is with us only for a week but she is not cuddly. The very first 2 days she did not even come to us. I showed her our bed and she backed up. I figured out she was scared. Now she goes up on our bed sometimes and plays there. She bites a lot(we are working on it), but licks us sometimes and wages her tail sometimes. Does not like to cuddle or sleep with us but I think you made a great point that no animal is born to learn how to cuddle. My baby never was fostered and who knows what she went thru and got from humans. I def feel sad when she doesn't cuddle with us but we have to try.. We gotta give her time and build trust slowly.. Hopefully soon my baby will cuddle with us and stay with us a lot more... Thank you again for your time and effort to make this video...

@@KatandDogs She is a German Shepheard mix. but her other half is border collie and hanging tree. Needless to say she has a very active and independent personality. I have found that it has been difficult to get her to respond affectively. After watching your video, we have made some progress. For the first time she nudged me with her nose instead of trying to gab my hand with her mouth. Thank you so much for your helpful video!!!

Maybe it's weather related? Rocky gets quite hot in the summer and I generally give him a bit of space then. Has this collected with a heatwave?

i always had dogs and they were naturally affectionate. My dog of 16 died. He was my baby and very affectionate. I adopted a rescue puppy mill dog and she is not affectionate and scared of everything i have her over 6 weeks now and shes still not affectionalte. when i try to kiss her she wants to run away. its very depressing. i will try your methods. I know it takes time for a puppy mill dog to learn to be a dog. Its hard though

Haha, it sounds like this)) But basically, all dogs have different temperaments, so some of them need more time to discover what can be pleasant for them and we need to take some steps to show it :) even if that involves treats)

Hahaha, yeah, I agree, not my finest moment. Learning speaking to the camera was a long journey. Initially I could not airing a sentence together when the camera was on, I would completely freeze. At the time of this video I was following toastmasters programme. Which i later realised is more suited to stage than to camera, but it helped me break down some barriers. Not proud of this video delivery, but from the comments I can see that the content helped plenty of people, so I decided not to take it down. Still in very early stages of my RU-vid journey, so it might be years before I'm good, but you have to start somewhere. ☺️
