----------
A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!

Theologically, I am horrified. This song is complete heresy. Uncertainty or resistance to fulfilling his mission? That's not in Christian scripture. Christs resentment and rebellion against his Father's will, as portrayed in the song, WRONG. Jesus feeling abandoned by God? NO. His freaking out about the necessity of his sacrifice? He's presented as resentful and rebellious, but ultimately acceptful. His will is the Fathers will, this song is horrible in representing the Biblical and historical person of Christ. It's a great song in terms of artistry, I do actually like it, and I'm blown away by the singing. But this song is complete heresy.
@annah.4634

@@dimanosov5393 "That's not in Christian scripture" I doubt you have read those scriptures. Read the Evangelium once more, if you forgot what exactly is written there.
@dimanosov5393
@dimanosov5393 2 месяца назад
@@annah.4634 The song is all "me me me me". It portrays Jesus as a narcissist who doesn't understand Gods plan of the cross, and presenting him as if he's some victim of a capricious diety. Yes, Jesus was troubled. The human body tends to begin freaking out and releasing chemicals when death is imminent. However, not once in scripture did Jesus make any demands for this cup to be taken away from him. He was begging the Father that if there was any other way this could be done, other than what he'd have to go through, if it was possible, but in the end he acknowledged it was the Father's will. His trouble was taking on Gods wrath onto himself, but "I can do nothing on My own initiative As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me." The last few words of the song "Before I change my mind" contradicts this scripture Gods will was his will, as the Son of the Father. If Jesus was to ask the Father of anything, the Father would have immediately saved his life, and therefore there would be no salvation for mankind. I stand with what I said initially. This song is a theological heresy, and it's presenting Christ as if he was a fallen, sinful human rather than the incarnate son of God. Yes, the song is fantastic, and the singer is amazing, but it's heretical

John Legend didn't even try to hit that high G. He knew he couldn't do it. While I was somewhat impressed with John Legend's performance, and I am NOT a John Legend fan, Ted Neeley did a production of Jesus Christ Superstar during 2018-2019 with Corey Glover doing the part of Judas, that hands down buried the John Legend production in the proverbial dust. Ted Neeley at 76 years of age did this song on Broadway on opening night, after not singing the song for years, he didn't even sing it during rehearsals, that will most likely stand the test of time as being the best performance of this song by anyone ever. It was so good I felt as though I had literally been levitated out of my seat.

Jesus I only want to say If there is a way Take this cup away from me For I don't want to taste its poison Feel it burn me I have changed I'm not as sure, as when we started Then, I was inspired Now, I'm sad and tired Listen, surely I've exceeded expectations Tried for three years, seems like thirty Could you ask as much from any other man? But if I die See the saga through and do the things you ask of me, Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God Want to see, I'd want to see, my God Want to see, I'd want to see, my God Why I should die Would I be more noticed than I ever was before? Would the things I've said and done matter any more? I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord If I die what will be my reward? If I die what will be my reward? Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Why should I die? Oh why should I die? Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain? Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain Show me there's a reason for your wanting me to die You're far to keen and where and how, but not so hot on why Alright, I'll die! Just watch me die! See how I die! Then I was inspired Now, I'm sad and tired After all, I've tried for three years, seems like ninety Why then am I scared to finish what I started What you started, I didn't start it God, thy will is hard But you hold every card I will drink your cup of poison Nail me to your cross and break me Bleed me, beat me Kill me Take me, now!
@JuliaMezaIntriago
@JuliaMezaIntriago Год назад

In both this and the 73 version, something is portrayed in this song. Through whatever magical means, Jesus saw his own execution coming, in detail, and it turned him into a mass of depression. If you knew, not thought, but KNEW that in the following days you'd be flogged, tortured, then eventually executed it'd really take the wind out of your sails. Then, as portrayed in this song, Jesus looks to God and says "Why me? Give me one good reason why I gotta go through this crap!"

Ricky M personally? I kind of hate that extra “now etc?” One of the things about this scene I love in the 73 version over most other versions is that, instead of ending on this big epic note, it just sort of...ends? Like Jesus is just so tired and done resisting what for him at that moment has been predetermined. Like he says, he’s just...tired. There’s no grand “yes god I’ll totally do this fuck it watch me!” It’s more a “...fine. Fine I’ll do it.” Not reluctance per say, nor defeat, but like...resignation. He’s steeling himself for the suffering to come. It’s a profoundly human moment that, for me personally, the big note at the end kind of undercuts in order to be a grand ending. Not to say this version is bad, I quite like this one, but little choices like that in the 73 version push it over the top for me.

Why is Glenn Carter so unpopular as Jesus. I know that a couple of times throughout the film he was a bit too calm and quiet but I still thought that he performed this well. I know that his "WHYYYYYYYYY" wasn't exactly up to the standard of Ted Neely but at least he tried, and he was much better at it than some people like John Legend, or Michael ball's one-off Gethsemane performance. I personally think that Glenn Carter's quite good as Jesus.
@LittleBloodbeat
@LittleBloodbeat 3 года назад
I don't get it either. I think Glenn was perfectly fine in the role. In fact, there were aspects of Glenn's performance--particularly during the crucifixion scene--that I think surpassed Neeley's, and that's coming from someone whose favorite in the role is Neeley.

Look it's the same reason that many people dislike this version. Since ted neely and carl Anderson and pretty much the whole 1973 were amazing they'd et the bar to high. So everyone who is mediocre is automatically thought to be a failure, in their eyes atleast

I will give Glenn the credit for giving his all and clearly showing a lot of emotion in a very emotional moment. But his voice wasn't rockstar enough for Jesus. Jesus never has a moment to himself until now and he's supposed to blow you away with not only with his incredible acting but with a powerhouse rock voice

Gethsemane is my favourite song in Jesus Christ Superstar
@helenakoerner5536
@helenakoerner5536 5 лет назад
Honestly this song isn’t supposed to be a rockstar song. It’s a prayer. According to the Bible, this song is based on Jesus’s prayer at Gethseme when he asked why God chose him to die. This is the moment where Jesus is at his most vulnerable state and Glenn in my opinion portrayed Jesus’ vulnerability very beautifully. He may not be up to the same standards of other portrayals of Jesus in terms of his voice, but the fact that he showcases this level of emotion within his performance makes Glenn my favorite portrayal of Jesus. Because having a good voice in musical theater is only half the battle.

Helena Koerner this is a rock portrayal of the Bible, so this song is supposed to be a rockstar
@helenakoerner5536
@helenakoerner5536 5 лет назад
Owen Myers okay. Maybe through this musical alone but I feel like that this movie wanted to see portray Jesus as realistic as possible and not go for that rockstar angle with him. And to that extent he did well with this song.
@owenmyers7

Helena Koerner The musical is written to be a rock opera, hence why most other actors in this portrayal have more rock style voices

D.D.S.E.N.A.S posturing. Anytime a later version of something comes out you have people having to be negative and pretentious because it makes them look like "real fans". Especially when you have a crossover of fans of a musical genre who prefer the version with their rock singer fave. I personally enjoy this version along with the others.
@remnants9974
@remnants9974 6 лет назад
yeah... if they simply don't like it at all that's one thing, but why is it necessary to compare it to ted neely? why not judge it on its own terms since it's obviously going for something different and this guy has his own interpretation of how to play the part? (I actually wrote a rant about this earlier, but think I lost it) basically if the only take on this they're able to appreciate is neely's, then that version is still there for them to listen to forever. personally I prefer this version because it's a lot more engaging to me, and I "connect" to it better, even if it has its flaws

@Kibetha

It's not a struggle. This musical is very deeply critical of the entire sacrifice of Christ - which is the centre of the Christian religion, and according to them, the best thing God has ever done for "us". So you could say this song makes it easier to hate one religion in particular, at least.

+ImpTom95 Speaking as a Christian as well, you hit the nail right on the head. I would be called blasphemous by my peers at my church, for I'm always questioning my religion. Like, I do believe in God, but doubt sometimes creeps in. But, ironically enough, it's this doubt that actually strengthens my faith. Weird, right? But, it's like you said, doubt is often required for believing in something. And yes, modern Christians can be a bit... much to deal with at times. But, like most religions, it's really your extremists that give the religion it's bad name, the ones that constantly preach about the Lord/Bible/Quran/ect. that are, ironically enough, the ones that deviate the most from what they teach and are the most hateful and spiteful. I've always said it, but really, the moderates are the ones that are better at following their respective religion's teachings than the so called "most devout." Again, the irony isn't lost on me.
