Getta Loada Toad | A Year With Frog and Toad Animatic 

I want to share a experience because I feel like I have a lot in common with toad. Since this art is going to be interpreted differently by each person, how I took this is seeing myself as toad. I was always a big person growing up and I had a couple experiences like this and I was not really pleasant to be around because I was pretty angry or sad a lot of the time. The specific experience that I’m thinking of is when I was dropped in a river during a cult(was forced to be in it) hiking trip. In the cult I was in, they have a ritual of making a huge hike and at the end people carry you across the river. I was a young tween at the time, and I was paired with people who could not carry me. They dropped me in the river and everyone was staring at me. They were all watching around the river. This reminds me of that experience.

This song is certainly a bit infuriating. It seems like the musical made a much bigger deal out of Toad’s insecurities than the book did. I still have a copy of the books, so I reread the chapter, “Swim,” this song is based on, and I have to say, it seems way less like bullying in the book. Toad acts pretty indifferent to the animals laughing at him, and all he really says after Frog tells him he does look kind of funny is “Of course I do!” Paired with an illustration of him walking away with his chin up. So it’s obvious the original writer wanted to make a lesson out of not being insecure about your body, or not letting people take away your dignity, something like that. But the musical version makes it seem a lot worse, especially considering how almost all the lyrics are Turtle, Mouse, and Lizard making fun of Toad and making a huge spectacle out of it, meanwhile Toad is acting a lot more insecure/embarrassed about it than he does in the books. In fact, in the book, he only stays in the water for a minute or two before giving in, and the animals waiting for him to come out don’t say anything mean (although they’re still being jerks by not respecting his privacy). Overall, IMO, the musical just makes this whole scene seem a lot like they’re trying to make a joke out of bullying. But I don’t think it was intentional. In the actual productions I’ve seen on RU-vid, Toad saying “I know” At the end seems more like he’s laughing at himself as well. So it’s more like bad writing than anything if you ask me.

I played Turtle in my theater’s production of A Year With Frog and Toad, and let me tell you, this brought back some serious nostalgia. Our hats even look similar!

I grew up with frog and toad, and Getta Loada Toad was amazing, and this is amazing!
