PATREON: / tokidokitraveller Here's what I wanted to let you know about in this video!
Many mountain forests in Japan are being devastated these days, with the trees being cut down and not replaced. Tanabe city in Wakayama, which is part of Kumano (famous for the Kumano Kodo!), has been trying to protect the forest as much as they can with their unique efforts.
In Tanabe I met so many people: Nakagawa-san who does “forestry without cutting trees”, Iwami-san who makes and sells objects made from imperfect lumber with worm holes, and chefs at a restaurant that serves “gibier” cuisine (game meat) to protect farms from animal’s whilst not wasting their lives. There was also so much farming we could do in Tanabe, so if you want to learn about green tourism and about this area and activities, please check the link!

Rebuilding forests with a variety of tree species is such HUGE work for sustainability and for protecting the forest itself, in Canada we replanted Ash trees wherever we cut and only Ash trees, then we had a pest infestation that came from China and it killed almost all our Ash, and cleared a lot of area in our forests because we only planted one kind, diversity in forests is so important

I feel like Japan is so well known for Tokyo, Osaka, and other big cities. But the countryside in Japan is so underrated for travelers. Imho, the countryside is where all the good traditional cultures lie untouched. Thanks for introducing the scenaries there, it felt like I was back there!
@TokidokiTraveller

sooo much to see and do in the countryside, I hope more people visiting venture out and can learn more about different areas! The tourism really helps smaller areas too

I went to Gunma my first time in Japan. I did the usual Tokyo, Kyoto but definitely wanted to experience the beautiful countryside. And I'm so glad I did.

I think people cling to bigger cities because they are more accommodating towards foreigners. I would absolutely love to visit the countryside, but I worry that it might be very difficult with my non-existing Japanese skills... On my second visit to Japan I travelled to Okinawa, and as much as I loved the views and the vibes, the language barrier was already very real (even fast food joints like KFC in Naha had no English menu/people seemed stressed about our presence) and honestly, I just didn't feel very welcome (but I realize that Okinawa might have its own reasons for not liking foreigners very much). Learning a couple of phrases and a good attitude might be enough to enjoy Tokyo, but outside of cities things seem to get a bit more complicated :(

Remember when we could go outside? In the before times? Children point and laugh and say to me _"you crazy old man! There's no such thing as outside! 'Outside' is a made-up story our parents told us in order to scare us into behaving ourselves."_ I just shake my weary weathered head, shed a small tear, and wonder if my inside-addled brain did indeed to just make-up the very notion of 'outside' to stop myself from going cosmically bananas.

Forestry is actually a really varied industry. I used to work for a conservation agency in the US and out foresters would go out every day to assess the health of the trees and see if any needed to be brought down for safety reasons alone trails. They did a bunch of other stuff too but man, it was interesting. I also love Thomas and Percy! Grow strong little trees!

I’m a bit confused about something in the video. I was super excited to see someone working to replace the mountains of sugi with a different variety of tree (oak/acorns), but it sounded like just replacing one monoculture with another. Are they planting a good variety of trees in the deforested areas, or is it all the same kind? It would be great to hear that were working to increase the overall biodiversity as part of this effort.

I now am beating myself for not going to Kumano when I was in Japan. It was a crossroad for me that day, either go on with the pre-planed route (Nara) or go to Kumano and watch the fireworks festival and explore the area. It fell on that I didn't find any place to stay that I could book in advance (on short notice) that was cheap enough so I went to Nara instead (LOVED IT TOO!). But now Kumano is right there on my to do-list for the next trip! :D Thanks Emma and Shiori for showing us more of this area! ;)

Oak trees are great (might be saying that because they're endemic to the UK too, lol)! Might be worth getting him to think about other tree variations though - Oak can still cause allergies, and variation helps drive that down.
