Fantastic advice for any business really, and life in general too. Start small. Try and keep debt low or no debt. Add as you grow and you'll grow as you add.

This is the way farmers USED to get started. The "modern" model of borrowing the year's operating costs and then hoping you can pay it off at the end of the year (necessary for high-input chem-dependent agriculture) is what killed my family's farm . . . if you're interested in farming in a way that won't drive you to ruin, start small . . . stay local . . . and make sure you read Eliot Coleman. :o)

A 10k budget for a beginning farmer would likely be a veggie farm on land already owned, or a high tunnel/greenhouse, or on rented land near the farmer's residence. The IRS even treats the land seperately. Have you read 'You Can Farm' by Joel Salatine? Holistic Management Int'l & Acres USA are other good places for info on starting a farming business, if you are interested.

Thanks for posting this because I always wondered how people got the money to start. Didn't know about Agricultural Loans and starting small like all of the people in this video said. I look for videos that tell me how much things cost. Like how much did someone pay to buy a house or how much did someone pay to start there small business, etc. It helps me picture it and know where I have to get to to get there.

Farm Credit caters to agriculture loans. All members own stock in the company.

Tp make a living & pay the taxes, farmers today must 'think outside the box'. Read: 'You Can Farm' by Joel Satatin; 'Restoration Agriculture' by Mark Shepard; 'Sepp Holtzer's Permaculture, A Guide' by Holtzer (read the Preface on Amazon); 'Holistic Management' by Allan Savory. Small & begining farmers groups, Organic farming groups, etc abound- but only you can decide what works for you on your piece of heaven, ur, I mean 'land'. :) These books will give you the basis to do just that.

Also search RU-vid for videos on these people ('Rebel Farmer' on Sepp Holtzer; 'Restoration Agricuture' by Mark Shepard; there are many videos on Joel Salatin; Holistic Management (though most of the video clips feature large-scale grazing operations on big acreges, Holistic Management principles apply to EVERYTHING); etc. Visit AcresUSA (dot) com & read the free articles on eco-agriculture. If you had these farmers, perhaps. But if you know anything about the vast majority of farmers, you know they know next to nothing about economics, even at farm level.

This video has nothing to do with starting a farm and contains completely irrelevant information. Who cares about yearly production costs when LAND is so much more ridiculously expensive? How about learning to establish credit? What loans or subsidies are available for small, first-time farmers? Which states have cheaper agricultural land and which have AG laws more conducive to small family farmers? SO basically you need a huge pile of cash to pay for the land up front (if you have no credit). And even with decent credit banks probably won't loan to you anyways.

This is not a video to watch stand alone, take a look at their other videos too. Then step outside their box. Learning about establishing credit isn't bad advice, but getting into debt is where problems begin and end for people regardless of whether it's a farm, another business or life in general. People are farming on leased land. People are farming on land for just a share of the crops. You don't need a "huge pile of cash." It's a myth. Also, is the myth that you need a hundred acres to farm on. Take a look at the work of Curtis Stone. It's time people think outside the box.
