Hey all, I have had quite a few people interested in hearing about what I do at Duke University to get a PhD in Environmental Engineering. Above I have outlined: what are environmental engineers, the typical requirements to obtain a PhD in environmental engineering, a day in the life of an environmental engineer, and the focus areas of my research. If you have any questions about this please post a comment below and I would be happy to do another video if there is interest in this topic again.

What surprised you the most about getting an Environmental Engineering PhD?
@zachydrogeo
@zachydrogeo 4 года назад
What’s interesting to me is how broad EE is. I was surprised to hear your background is in marine science. I’m currently studying civil and environmental engineering at NJIT. The focus seems to be mostly on environmental engineering in construction, highway noise, zoning, urban sound pollution, hydrology, hydraulics & WRE. Totally different than the biology/ chemistry focus you described. Granted it’s still undergrad but I wanna do grad school for EE- pollution fate and transport.

Zach Tinawi that’s amazing! EE is quite diverse and it especially depends on what department you apply to. They can have many different tracks. I got accepted into most of the TOP EE PhD programs with a Marine Science Background (Stanford, UC Berkeley, GTech, etc). And I got all A’s in my coursework at Duke. If you want I can make a video on preparing your application,ways to stand out, and how to succeed when your in? I also recommend you check out my video on research I just posted. Best of luck in your studies!

I actually already got accepted into the bs/ms program at NJIT. My school has Civil and Environmental in the same department, we don’t have an EE bachelors program yet so I feel like my focus is much more tied to the civil scope, which is light on chemistry and requires no undergrad bio. I want to make sure I’m prepared to study pollution fate/ transport/ detection methods, I’d like to work in a lab. Maybe a video on the key prerequisites/ science background one might not get from civil... should I take orgo? Or more generally, discuss the science and different topics in EE. Thanks!! And btw Dr. Becky the astrophysicist sent me here and I’m glad she did!

Zach Tinawi Dr. Becky is amazing! I’m so thankful for both of your support! I can totally add in a video sometime on general fundamental science courses that might help with transport. And there are so many different types of EE it’s so easy to get lost in the details. I could even do a video with short clips of different Env. Eng. in my department. We all do very different things. That’s really nice that the BS/MS program is tied together.

Exceptional and comprehensive view into your work, thank you for taking the time to educate us! Do you use R because it's open source or do you find it to be genuinely better? Drop a tutorial on it if you find some spare time. xx
@imariwalker
@imariwalker 4 года назад
Thanks for the question. I used R because its what most of my institutions used to train us in doing statistics and making figures. I appreciate the video suggestion. I will definitely speak on it sometime.

Good day, I really enjoyed your video. I’m intend going for a PhD in the UK. Wanna study energy engineering and environmental management. Please I really your advice. Which softwares should I really learn to make things east during my research? And would also want to discuss my topic with you if you don’t mind.

Congrats! I can definitely make a video on this but I would recommend you stay in the habit of reading literature and methods sections and doing lab work often. Make sure to keep accurate notes as well.

Hi! I am currently looking at the phd program at duke. I have received my masters from Virginia Tech in environmental engineering, and focused in wastewater treatment. I am currently working as an environmental engineer consultant, but am really interested in going back to get a PhD. Any advice would be greatly appreciated:)
@imariwalker
@imariwalker 3 года назад
Hey Allison! Thank you for reaching out! I think you are gonna be in great shape to complete your PhD at Duke. There are quite a few folks in the program that did consulting work prior to the PhD. I would recommend thinking about what is your ultimate research passion and what advisor will best help you get there. Also check in with the graduate students in the lab you are interested in because sometimes these websites are not properly updated. For example, its close to impossible to propose any new nanoparticle research in my Duke CEE department because the interest and funding is gone.

I would like to know more about modelling. What sort of programs or software do you use in your modelling? I just want to know the whole process of modelling.
@imariwalker
@imariwalker 3 года назад
I can totally make a video on modeling! Most of what I do is either statistical modeling or transport modeling of chemicals. For both I usually use R software but I know other colleagues that use other modeling programs.

Hi! My PhD isn’t necessarily water resources engineering but I’m sure the steps are very similar to finishing the degree. I will be making a video on advice for new PhDs in this field soon.

Absolutely! Lots of people switch fields in engineering. You just have to be prepared to take some extra classes to get caught up on the fundamentals

HI! What made you choose Duke University? I am interested in Environmental Engineering. Can we connect?
@imariwalker

That’s an awesome question! I honestly should make a video about it because it’s actually wasn’t too straightforward. But the financial offer at duke was much better than any other school plus they had all my research interests there.
