Chickens will naturally take a break from laying eggs in the winter, particularly as daylight hours start to decline. And especially if you live somewhere that has darker winters, like Alaska! I did not supplement light for my chickens this winter, and we haven't gotten an egg in months. It's early April, and we're finally starting to see fresh eggs again...about 2/day right now out of 9 birds (granted, they're also a few years old). If you want to keep your chickens laying strong all year, you just need to supplement light in their coop during the darkness of winter.
