Comfrey (symphyyum officinale) has been used for a multitude of conditions over the centuries it has been found to contain a liver toxin called paralyzing alkaloids and was banned from sales for internal use in 2001. It is hard to determine the true safety concerns with this plant as many have consumed it and each patch contains different amounts of the toxic alkaloids. The roots are also said to have 10 times as much as it leaves.
For this reason Comfrey is now not recommended for internal use. Externally however, it has shown to be helpful for all sorts of issues including, ulcers, wounds, joint inflammation, bruises, rheumatoid arthritis, swollen veins, gout and fractures.
When this plant was recommended internally in the past, it was said to be useful for fever, upset stomach ulcers heavy menstrual flow diarrhea, bloody urine, persistent cough painful breathing, bronchitis, cancer, chest pain, sore throat, broken bones and internal hemorrhaging.
Comfrey is a great addition to a first aid kit as it has a long reputation for helping to mend wounds and other emergency situation fast. It is considered a cell proliferation and has been shown to help double the speed at which cells reproduce.
Many old world herbalists healers and people who lived close to land considered this to be an invaluable plant and used it extensively for a wide variety of conditions.
A strong tea of the fresh or dried leaves can be made, then a cloth soaked in it applied to damaged tissues. Alternatively a poultice or compress of crushed foliage can be applied to skin conditions. Including lesions, rashes, poison ivy, blisters scratches. Some experts suggested comfrey is not to be applied open wounds due to the paralyzadine alkaloids, though it has a long history of use in open wound care.
The roots bring up nutrients from the mineral rich subsoils breaking up heavy clay and aerating the land. For this reason permaculturist love this plant. As well the leaves can be cut and buried as a rich compost or turned into a fermented fertilizer farm tea. It is great added to other nutrient dense herbs for these applications.
These are just a few ways that this wonderful plant can be used, there are many more worth exploring.
Hope you get out and connect with this plant in person as it is an invaluable ally to have.
Herbal Blessings,
Yarrow

My great grandmother from the old country brought comfrey with her... years later I was born in 1959 and comfry was where ever I was. I ate it and loved it. take one large leave bend stem in two, whip 2 eggs dip it like French toast and fry fast in a hot iron skillet perfect and I 60 years old... still alive!!!!

Last summer I was boiling water when the pan got knocked over and I received 3rd degree burns all along the inside of my leg. It was horrible. I recommend anyone go to their Doctor right away of course but here is what I did. I dressed it twice a day with the gel of fresh comfrey liberally on the wound itself and on the bandages. I was a wound care nurse for years and I would have documented my wounds as healed in 15 days. No antibiotics, no hospital. Just comfrey. Cleanliness and a good diet. Comfrey is a gift to humans from above!

I grew it for my dairy goats for after they gave birth. And for the nutrition. They loved it so much! I also used it when i sprained my ankle really bad. I sent my kids out to the garden for me to get some comfrey plantain yarrow and lavender and they mashed it up for me and wrapped my ankle. I was so happy for them as they were only 3 and 6 yrs old.

I met an elder who similarly, but not at all the same thing began her medicine teachings at 3yr old. Her teacher, mum was very ill & told her to go get the plants she'd been told about for the issue. The child went alone into the deep dark rainforest to find & pick the plant medicine. Today the medicine woman is the respected as Diane Brown of the Haida Nation & linguistic educator & one of the few fluent Haida speakers.

I LOVE Comfrey, an one of my favorite herbs. As an herbalist for over 30 years and a board certified aesthetician, i recommend comfrey for lots of external wound healing but i do caution on open wounds, due to the fact the comfrey works so well at healing it will assist the skin to grow back together, and if someone uses it on an open infected wound it can cause the skin to grow over the infection causing an internal festering infection. Thank you for this lovely video

Someone else recommended that it not be used on deep wounds for same reason... I’ve dealt with that problem... it IS a real concern ... I am glad you brought this up.... on another note, someone else said it helped with what sounded like a deep brown recluse bite ... do you know anything? I am a budding herbalist and would love to know what other seasoned herbalists have to say... I should say that the person w the brown recluse degeneration was facing potential amputation and so maybe in a case like that, the use of comfrey was worth the last ditch effort

So this may not be pertinent anymore, but I am not loving the music in this video. Not that there is anything wrong with said music, I just find it a distraction while he is explaining things. I hope the other videos don't have too much music, because I really like how this person explains the herbs and how to use them. I think maybe it is the talking with the hands and demonstrations throughout that really help me to understand him better than some other people on youtube I also watch. It is such good information but it can be kind of dry, but I always just like hearing the little birds chirping, it is so peaceful that way and makes me want to go outside and learn about what I have in my back yard. Thanks Herbal dude!!

In 2017 I fell off my bike and torn my ACL joint in my shoulder (stage 3 tear). Three surgeons told me I’d be out for 5-6 months and my shoulder would never be the same again. I drank comfrey root tea three times a day for 2 months and applied a comfrey root powder poultice in my shoulder with DMSO three times a day. After 2 weeks the pain was gone. After 6 weeks I was doing pull ups and push ups without any pain. Like I said before, doctors told me it would take 5 to 6 months to heal. My liver is perfectly healthy, comfrey is safe to use internally and externally for extended periods of time. To label comfrey is apparently toxic to liver, they purified atrazine alkaloids and injected large doses of it into 2 week baby rats. After several months they found some damage to the liver. That’s like saying “don’t eat grapes, they are toxic to the liver” and then injecting wine into 2 week babies’ liver and saying “see it’s toxic”.

Hi! I´ve been working with comfey for a long time and it is a great tissue-healer. The best results i got so far was from extracting the roots. Therefore the right time is important: you should get the roots after the first frost to get all of the nutrients stored in the plant. For an alcohol-extract let the (chopped) root sit in 30% alcohol for at least 3 weeks. This is great also for skin problems like psoriasis or sunburns. Stay safe and healthy!

The fda doesn't want you to be healthy. Fda and big pharma are in bed together and anything that cures cancer gets demonized by depopulation FDA. They want sick and dead people and they wanna profit off of it so...cant have any miracle cures...gotta demonize it. Anything the fda goes on the bandwagon to demonize...i definitely USE. My great grandmother grew it, and ate it all her life. Died at the ripe old age of 104. Super healthy and never went to an allopathic doctor. She ate it every day...so there's that.

Your sickle is an amazing tool. A scythe has a much longer handle and the blade is not as tight a curve and set on the handle at an angle that allows one to cut a larger amount of plants with one stroke with minimal bending over and typically used in the past for cutting crops like wheat. A skillful user can cut down a field and have it laying down ready to fork up and stack or sheath and the stubble left will look like it has been mowed! I don't have that kind of skill myself. Can't begin to handle a cradle which is a multi bladed scythe and an awesome sight to see a skilled user in action. My sickle has taken down a lot of weeds and can be the tool of choice for harvesting crops like comfrey. Loved your video. Great info about comfrey. Thanks.
@TgWags69
@TgWags69 2 года назад
The long handle of the scythe is called a snath or snede from Old English snǣd . My late father's friend who is close to 90 and grew up in very primitive conditions in the hills of Appalachia calls is a sneeth which is kind of a combination of those two words. It is interesting that the vocabulary they used up in the hills, cut off from outside influences continued with old and archaic words which modern culture no longer use.

If your comfrey has purple/pink/lavender flowers and the leaves have ribs that continue down the stalk of the plants stem, This is a safe edible and medicinal plant. The comfrey that grows wild and has yellow flowers is a more potent version and should be avoided.

I've been using tincture of comfrey on bee stings and spider bites for years. Stings used to last for days, with hot and burning itching, which drove me crazy. Comfrey used right after getting stung will relieve the pain almost immediately, and the sting will disappear. Spider bites can last for days, or weeks even, but with tincture of comfrey they begin healing immediately, and after a few days the bite will be gone. I used it on a hairline fracture of my thumb, and it healed within days! I't was interesting learning about all the other uses - thank you for sharing bro!

They are such a beautiful plant, and stunning flower! And believe it of not, they also get rid of warts! I burnt my forearm on a very hot pot that I was using to make my pine sap salve. It burnt very badly and was blistering, I broke one of the large leaf stems, and squeezed the "aloe like" mucilage, gel substance out and applied it all over the burn. The pain stopped almost instantly! And by the next morning, the blister was gone! And the burn was no longer red or even pink, anywhere! It had actually already formed a brownish, flat, thin, completely healed scab on top. Completely healed, over night! And for the wart that I had on my finger, I applied chopped up leaves, balled up and held in place with a band aid for approximately 5 days. (Changing it everyday and removing the dead tissue) and by the 5th day it was all soft healed tissue, no more wart! It is even said, to never use this as a poultice on a deep wound, because it heals the cells at such a rapid rate, that the outside of the wound will heal completely before the inside is healed. This could cause boils and infection to form because the outside would be completely healed, while the inside of the wound would still be damaged. This truly is an amazing plant! I have been collecting seeds this whole season, to plant all around my property. I also have a jar of chopped leaves that I've poured very hot olive oil over (because you never want the Comfrey to boil, as this can cause it to lose some of its medical properties) and sealed. It then sits for around 5 weeks, at this time, you strain it, heat it, (never to boiling) and mix a bit of bees wax to it, in order to make a salve! The only downside is that it will be very smelly when you open the jar. Which is why, it's suggested to mix a few drops of pure lavender oil with it. The last slight downside, is that the Comfrey plant will, for sure, stain your skin and possibly clothing as well, it takes some time to wear off the skin. All in all, these small issues can very easily be overlooked, for it's beyond wonderful healing properties! Comfrey truly is a very special gift given to us all! Thank you once again, for such a wonderful video! You are also a gift to us all!

@Rob haha! I think he's doing a wonderfully amazing job at making these videos! I am beyond grateful for each and every one! If someone is, for some reason, having a hard time hearing him (which I don't get, because I hear him just fine) they can simply put on the captioning, this way they can read every word he is saying! Not a problem! Certainly not a reason to EVER complain about any of these AMAZING videos that he CHOOSES to share his knowledge with us in.

@@justme-np9io It's certainly not all about you. Thankfully there are many different people that make this globe function. No one said they weren't amazing videos. No one said they weren't appreciative. But there are people who have attention issues or HEARING CHALLENGED. It's sweet that you felt the need to defend but get a life... YOUR preferences are not everyone's. IF I were taking the time to make these videos I'd want honest feedback. Who are you to snuff that process?

To all the people on here, who are complaining about the music on this video. I found no problem with the music at all! If it's too loud for you, maybe consider turning the volume down and putting the captions on. He is amazing and so full of positive energetic vibe, the music only adds to his upbeat attitude. No one should ever complain or try to critique ANY of his videos. This man is gifting us all with his amazing wealth of knowledge, and unbelievably, it is all for free! Imagine that.. we don't have to pay a penny for his teachings! We all need to be, WAY beyond thankful for whatever he shares with us, in whatever way he chooses! I will never understand people, who will still find something to complain about, or something to critique, about a gift that is freely given. 🤦

Excellent. I started some Bocking 14 this spring from root cuttings and set them out in my heavy Georgia clay soil. The plants are beautiful. I planted it primarily to enhance soil fertility. I'm glad to know more about harvesting and other uses as well.

Twelve year old inguinal hernia. 65 yrs old. A guy in California makes a blend of comfrey and other stuff and freezes narrow sheets of it and sends it out to the sufferers. Yes he charges for it. He said it was not safe just using the straight dried and wet poultice on the hernia.

You can safely make infusions of the leaves or eat as a pot herb but never eat the roots. Also, some of the issues with the liver damage was related to another variety of comfrey that has yellow flowers. We use the roots smashed up as the most powerful fresh poultice for injuries/sprains. It's crazy how people are still scared of using this plant. Comfrey and nettles are two of my favorite go-to plants....well, lance leaf plantain too.

Might want to check your information there has never been liver damage found in humans, only one study that could not be repeated that supposedly was found in rats and the amount that they used was absurd and even then could not be duplicated. It was never comfrey that was used in the study, just the alkaloid extract in absurd amounts and even then it hasn't been repeated. Great video and great job.

It is such a joy to learn and share .
