In the 1830s they still have more pockets then average modern day ppl
@moringsdaughter
@moringsdaughter Месяц назад
This disproves the myth that the lack of pockets in women's clothes is a historical control tactic by men. It's actually a recent phenomenon resulting from tight fitting clothes with smooth lines that don't give the necessary space for pockets.

That's some original content that we don't see that often. Love it. Keep up the good work

I'm confused why you put the drawers over the chemise. That would make going to the ladies very difficult. The split was there to allow for loo trips, but putting the drawers on that way stops access.
@sewthroughtime
@sewthroughtime 6 месяцев назад
It doesn't but does stop you from being exposed if you end up with your skirts up for some reason, like a fall. If you look at period images they typically are on top unless they are a much later combination underwear

Incredibly beautiful dress! Those pockets are such a good idea as well, wonder why we stopped using them and stuck with the micro pockets we have now lol!

to sell us purses 😭
@EspeonMistress00
@EspeonMistress00 10 месяцев назад
Because our clothes are more fitted to our bodies and pockets ruin the modern day silhouette
@moringsdaughter
@moringsdaughter Месяц назад
@@suzi32 You have the causation backwards. Women started wearing tighter fit garments that don't have space for pockets. They then started carrying purses as a result. The purse industry is not controlling the rest of the fashion industry.

First off you looks amazing and that dress is to die for. But I wanted to ask why is the hem so high up compared to some of the other fashion eras?
@sewthroughtime
@sewthroughtime 9 месяцев назад
Because of fashion. I suspect it was fashionable like that because it balances the proportions of the sleeves better than long hems
@aaronlefay
@aaronlefay 9 месяцев назад
@@sewthroughtime now that you say that it does even more sense. I know that back then the way to show wealth was to use a whole lot of fabric for a garments. Seems like instead of making the skirts longer and fuller. It was just migrated up north to the shoulders and arms lol.
@sewthroughtime

Exactly! They did the long trains for a while and then it shifted again

I just realized what a modern look it gives to just "hang around" with the hands in the pocket. I wonder if girls did this and got chastised (is this the correct word?) by their moms to look more lady like? I would love to see some painting with a woman with her hands in her pockets.

Cor-set? Is that how all Americans pronounce it or is it more regional. Honestly, just curious as I have never in my 68 years heard anyone say cor-set.

What is throwing me off is the split drawers worn OVER the corset and chemise. I'm accustomed to 1860s fashions where I wear my chemise and drawers UNDER the corset. This seems uncomfortable, unless you put them on third for demonstration purposes only for modesty's sake in the video? 💜
