We may hate Mrs Bennett all we want, but her trick of sending Jane on horseback in heavy rain did indeed make Mr Bingley fall in love with her. Moreover, it also helped Lizzy when she visited Jane, since Mr Darcy also fell for her when she was staying with them.

@@maddiesenator5491 I think you sympathize with her more when you remember the context. I loved the line in the 2005 version when Lizzie says in exasperation, “Is marrying off your daughters all you think about” and Mrs. Bennet turns to Lizzie and says, “When you have 5 daughters, tell me what else will occupy your thoughts.” You can almost hear Mrs. Bennet think, “I may sound crazy, but we have no sons, no one to inherit the house and very little savings. I am right to be anxious about this.”
@krdiaz8026
@krdiaz8026 Год назад
Well, she had also almost ruined their chances by her display of presumption at Mr. Bingley's ball, by not disciplining Lydia, and by encouraging Mr. Collins to marry Lizzie. So, really it was more luck than Mrs. Bennett's doing which makes her character all the more ridiculous (but in a funny way) because we just know how she'll brag about how she had planned it all. Hence I've always thought of P&P as a romantic comedy.

@OdeInWessex
@OdeInWessex Год назад
In those days not that many people made 'old bones' so to speak, so as she had her first child very early she would have been considered senior at 41 in the period, she'd had five daughters, that would have put her in the 'soon to be granny' category.

@@OdeInWessex I actually lived in an impoverished neighborhood where, by the time I moved out at age 32, it wouldn’t have been unusual for me to be a grandmother. When the actor who played Mr. Wickham in 1995, Adrian Lukas, entered his 60s, he created and performed a one-man-show from the perspective of Mr. Wickham in his 60s. It was fascinating how the actor mentioned that while he couldn’t play a handsome rouge anymore, he still had many years to live life. However, Mr. Wickham might be heading towards the end of his life at that age. Crazy to think about.
@laurenconrad1799

I also have to imagine that with the number of children Mrs. Bennet had and the way her husband married her despite not being in tune with her intellectually, she was probably hot stuff at age 18. But it does make you wonder if she’d be a Kate Beckinsale-look alike at age 40 or more like a grandma type. Humans come in many forms. Lol

Yes, but 41 by their standards wasn't 41 by mine. (Holy cow, I'm old enough to have grown up kids by now!) Nutrition and medical care, even in richer families, wasn't as good as it is now, having five viable pregnancies would have taken its toll on her.

The romance of fashion collides with the romance of the Jane Austen era. It's always the detail in fashion that is overlooked; the embroidery; the cut and style; how dresses can be so elegant and eye-catching. In this mini-series, the costumes will no doubt enchant whilst making a social statement that suitors' cannot fail to miss.

It's fascinating how in the text, Mrs. Bennet goes on the "hang Kitty" rant on one day but the proposal doesn't happen until Mr. Bingley has been there for a full day and then comes back the second day. But it just wouldn't make sense to for a filmmaker to film those 2 whole days, which is why both you and the directors of the 1995 version made it one day. And by making it all in one day, it makes Mrs. Bennett seem way more effective than she is in that moment. 😂

What a wonderful video!!! I can almost feel like I’m there at Longbourn! For anyone who hasn’t read Pride and Prejudice, READ IT NOW! I’m ashamed to say that because I’m a man from the Southern US, I was always told Pride and Prejudice was “just a romance book for women” and I didn’t have the courage to challenge that sexist nonsense when I was younger. It took me decades before I decided to read it while bored during lockdown last year. It is now my favorite book of all time and I am PROUD to say that I have binge-watched the 1995 series too many times to count. So for anyone putting off reading Austen and particularly P&P (especially the men out there), the sooner you read it, the sooner you will be able to fall in love with this masterpiece and the genius that is Jane Austen. @sheleavitt06
@sheleavitt06 Год назад
Um early 18th century would have been before Mrs Bennett was even born😬 If we are saying that the story is “supposed” to be 1790 and Mrs Bennett is 41 years old that means she would have been born in 1749 which puts her birth MID 18th century. When she was a young woman that would be late 1760s early 1770s. So also not early 18th century. Also the Bennett’s are landed gentry so this idea that a wealthy family isn’t staying up to date on fashion is ridicules. Mrs Bennett has a clothing allowance and is expected to be fashionably dressed for her station as the mistress of Longbourn. But can we please talk about their hair. The actress hair are all way too long in the front. They would need to have shorter haircuts in the front for the rag curls to do their job. This looks way too sloppy for what I usually see on this channel. Man they let their standards slip because they wanted to do a seen from the book more then doing accurate fashion history 😓

In the 2005 version, you had a 19 year old playing a 20 year old (Keira Knightley), a 19 year old playing an 18 or 19 year old (Talulah Riley as Mary), a 19 year old playing a 17 year old (Carey Mulligan as Kitty) a 20 year old playing a 15 year old (Jena Malone as Lydia), a 25 year old playing a 22 year old (Rosamund Pike as Jane), a 30 year old playing a 28 year old (Mathew Mcfadgen as Darcy), a 30 year old playing a 27 year old (Claudie Blakey as Charlotte), and a 17 year old playing a 16 year old (Tamzin Merchant as Georgiana). Awesome video! I love most adaptations of P&P, but I do think it'd be cool to have a full movie actually set properly in the 1790s and with the 1790s fashion and hair. Most productions either choose the date it was actually published (1813) or just some nebulous date from 1795- 1815, and then they mix up all the fashions from that era (ahem 2005 P&P). So you have characters that look like they're dressed in clothes from 1796 and characters dressed in clothes from 1812. Which is a bit silly.

I’ve also heard that the French Revolution made people want garments that were looser with less structure to symbolize how they were trying to dismantle structures of oppression (also rich women could afford more structured gowns in the 1700s). Rewatching the BBC/A&E Pride and Prejudice made me wonder that tif in the scene where Lydia is moving through the crowd at the Phillip's waiving a ribbon with another girl following her trying to get it if she's run off with that girl's stocking garter?!?

Love these videos. I’d love to see more of men clothing and other time periods like ancient times, medieval times, native dress ware, Victorian, renaissance, and one and on. So many possibilities. I’m obsessed.
