Emilia went to get assessed for dyslexia and dyscalculia, We booked this back in May so if you are thinking about getting your child assessed consider how long it might take.. I know Emilia was really worried about doing this and what it might mean afterward but she left the center feeling good about it.. i wish i had been assessed as a child and therefore i wouldn't have spent most of my life thinking i was stupid because i couldn't read words without them changing but then at university i was assessed and suddenly a lot made sense to me!
here is a link if you want to get my ebook which is currently on offer for only 99p or just search amazon for All my friends our invisible and lets go on a journey together - www.amazon.co.uk/All-My-Frien...

So glad amelia got assessed sooner rather than later because it makes things so much easier in school to know because you can get one-to-one help from the school. I am dyslexic and am so glad i got assessed when i was amelia's age, it made things easier because i got the help i needed when i was still young. Well done amelia for doing the assessment, i remember being very nervous for my assessment as well!

It's a beautiful thing when a parent doesn't dismiss your learning challenges and pays attention to a child's struggles. My cousin has a daughter who struggled through school, and I suspected it may be ADHD (which I struggle with) but she would not have her tested, even though her daughter asked to be tested. She continues to call her lazy and will not admit her daughter struggles. It is extremely frustrating, as I'm a family member and cannot directly step on my cousin's toes. Emilia is very lucky to have Jonathan and Anna as parents!!

Can I just say how refreshing and positive this video is. I have both of these conditions and have suffered with them badly since childhood and it still affects my confidence terribly today. I was made to feel nothing but stupid at school (despite going to a private school), and my parents never really told me the diagnosis till I was at university on the basis that disabilities aren’t really something to be spoken about. Im in a top profession now, and it’s not been without it’s struggles and I have learnt to be open with employers but if I can be as positive and open with my own children (when I have them) that their condition is nothing to be ashamed of, like you and Emilia, then I know I’m going about it the right way. Xxx

Same, I'm mid 30s! It's a relief to think there's maybe an actual THING that I have had all this time. Getting into 'maths' situations with work or in daily life been a secret terror for me and a humiliating burden. Having this could lift so much shame from my shoulders (not that it should be shameful, but of course it feels that way when you're faced with something you can't do especially as an adult).

I have dyslexia dyspraxia and autism. And have just got my first teaching job. It amazing that you are going and making sure that she gets the help she need as with it she will be able to do anything that she wants. Tell Emelia that she can do what ever she want and to never let anyone say or do anything to get in her way. This don't stop it just makes her the amazing person that she is

Terrific news! I wish to God this learning disability was known when I was your daughter's age. At age 63 I still tell time (5 mins till a quarter of 3).What I will tell you is that she will develop visual skills to compensate for most things that involve math. Thanks for letting young parents know about this!

I now work a full time job doing something I love and have never regretted having any of these challenges. (Well perhaps anxiety and depression) but the educational issues have never held me back! My daughter was diagnosed with both early this year. She also has dysgraphia. It may be worth looking into an assessment for adhd as they tend to go hand in hand. My daughter has inattentive adhd so not hyperactive which is really easy to go unnoticed especially at school. I home school my daughter so that’s when I started seeing it and got her a private assessment.

@@emilygrace5676 yeah. I was so lucky that I went to a private school for primary school and they picked up on it when I was in year 3. I really have to applaud you both Anna and Jonathan cos more parents need to be aware and more kids need to be assessed for things like this. Don’t leave it too long. And I’m also autistic and didn’t get that diagnosis till I was 24. So yeah parents don’t leave it too long.

She doesn’t get extra time because your school has to do exam access we’re the students have to do a test 1 to 1 and send it in to the exam board they work with and that’s who makes the decision of it it depends what is is the exam access tests when that happens they will also look at other things she might need the report will make it more Easier to get extra time.

You probably know, but pretty sure you need to have an exam with the school to allow extra time? You need a special plan with the team at school. Just because you registered with something, doesn't just gives you it. You have to now put it in place. I had 30 minute extra time, plus spare room for exams (27) and I had to do tests at school to be aloud.

Having been a school psychologist and then a dyslexia specialist, I always suspected that Jonathan most likely had ADHD/Dyslexia. It is highly heritable. I always thought Edie was the most likely to have it. I commented several years ago about it, and the crowd here really ripped into me. And Anna, I always thought you didn't have it. You are always correcting Jonathan's spelling, etc. I'll be curious to know what you find out. Dyscalculia and dyslexia are not one in the same. I am glad they teased that out. I'm awaiting assessments for Autism, ADHD and Dyspraxia, I'm 29 now and wish I'd been assessed earlier as I've grown up feeling depressed and like I was a failure

I'm saying this before watching so I don't know if you got the results or not but Emilia might like the Disney show Andi Mack. There is a character on it with dyscalculia!
