Julia don't worry, getting laid off is not the same as getting fired! There's no negative connotation for future employers and they normally give you an exit package, like a couple months of pay....might have to go on unemployment briefly... you seem like a knowledge worker though so you should be fine 🙂 12:21 oh you live in Silicon Valley eh? I live here and grew up here, since 1984 when I was six 🙂

@@SaMa-sq3mu omg no worries. Being fired means you did something that was a fireable offense (like you did something inappropriate or messed up at your job in a major way). It goes on your record and if a future interviewer does a background check with your previous company they will learn you were fired and probably not want to hire you unless you explain it. HR also has to document the reason you were fired etc. because if you’re fired for an unlawful reason (like they were being sexist or something) you can sue them. For example, if Julia mentioned some confidential stuff about her job on YT that she had signed an NDA about then she could get fired. Being laid off just means the company is letting you go - not because you did something wrong - but because they don’t have enough $$ to pay all their employees and are cutting costs. In any case (firing or lay off), the company has to pay you severance, I believe. (Never been fired nor laid off so this is just my understanding, I’m not a lawyer) It’s way more preferable to be laid off than fired because then it’s not YOUR fault

FYI I’m sure Julia knows by now what’s up since she films these in advance and is just giving us suspense 🤭. Based on her managers words (org change), it highly implies lay off rather than firing her, but it could also (unlikely) mean that she’s getting a role change (company reorg). Her manager probably would not give her this sus of a meeting invite if it were good/neutral news though…
