I started last week, a little late in life at 40. But I am having lots of fun with the trombone. I can see your videos becoming a must watch on fridays for me. Cheers :)

It's never too late! Some things will take longer at 40, but the journey is the best part :) Thanks for the kind words! I'm so glad that you are finding the videos useful and hope you continue to do so with the Friday videos. Cheers!

I started late too. It is hard work. But I am having fun (mostly). I very much enjoy the friends I have made in the music world.

I started trombone as a euphonist in jazz (not planning on staying on it, though). This is really informative and helpful as I struggle with tone on trombone where I don't on euphonium. Thank you!

Interesting roots to your jazz playing. Glad this helped, make sure to also check out the handful of valve trombonists as well as those who can also play euphonium (Michael Dease and Altin Sencalar are a couple of jazz euphonium doubler names that come to mind).

Great sounds like you’re actually practicing! That’s really the main secret ingredient to getting good at trombone. Good luck, hope you keep playing 😎

I'm in 6th grade band and probably one of the better players in my room because most of the kids slack off. This helped my tone get alot better especially on piano and forte and can only thank you.

Wow, getting serious in 6th grade 😎 I’m glad this helped. I learned about most of these concepts in college and have revisited them several times throughout my career. It would be great to hear you play sometime! Keep going 🎶

@@melting5883 I’ll have to make a video on my thoughts on high range development. In general, okay softly without moving embouchure and let the tongue do the work (see my videos on lip trills and embouchure). Play softly for sure and do this at the end of your playing day; it’s okay if note doesn’t come out or if it sounds really bad. Just keep doing it every day and don’t push! LET the air resonate the horn 😗💨 🎶

Do you got any tips on sight reading? I'm in highschool band and after quarantine I'm pretty rusty
@jazzbonept
@jazzbonept 2 года назад
The biggest things I'd say are 1) Do it EVERY DAY, 2) get through the entire thing despite mistakes, and 3) prioritize rhythm over everything else (notes, pitch, style, etc.). Of course find a way to get your hands on material to read, including from school (if any), online, local library, music stores, etc. I hope this helps, let me know if you had any other questions about this.

how would you recommend working on keeping a good tone while changing partials? i feel like i can play the notes well individually but when i change like during lip slurs it gets a little harsh and airy and not as resonant
@jazzbonept
@jazzbonept Год назад
doing a chromatic glissando starting from the middle of your range and going to the top of your range, as well as from the middle to bottom of your range, can help; focus on maintaining that rich, resonant tone (with ease) throughout!

Just always do the warm up and lip slurs as you do it with proper practice and patience ur lips will eventually get used in upper registers

Hi Kevin, I was for the longest time (in WA), but have been in the Midwest finishing grad school, performing, and teaching. I'm guessing you're asking because you are on the West coast?
