About the place of the stress in „quần“: there is an explicit orthographic rule, I think, that says that the tone mark should be attached to circumflex sign if there is any in the word (and to the last vowel, if there is no circumflex, I think). That is considered to be „new orthography“, and the previous one tended to mark first vowel (so it was probably qu^`an back then, but I can't be sure).
