Thanks for this video. It was quite enlightening to watch. Just a fee questions. What advise will u give to an IMG like me plans on working in the nhs and is very interested in research but has little to no research opportunity in his home country to test the waters. Would an academic training pathway be possible?

How would you market yourself to a consultant as an incoming 2nd year student? Because all my summer plans were cancelled due to COVID, I literally have no relevant experience or skills I can bring🥴

Louise W You don’t need to have any prior skills to approach a consultant for research - you’re a 2nd year, there are no expectations! There are trainees who don’t know much about research and are just getting started (much later than you). Just tell them you’re keen to get involved, you can always say that you haven’t done any research before so that they know you’ll need closer supervision and more help. As long as you’re enthusiastic and willing to learn then lack of experience is no deterrent; and anyone can do things like data collection easily.

Are meta analysis and systematic reviews count as original research? If not, what kind of research are deemed as original? (all I can think is web lab research, but it can last for years...)

Yes - original research articles include (from lowest level of evidence to highest): - Case reports - Case series - Cohort studies (prospective or retrospective) - Case-control studies - Population / epidemiology / ecological studies - Randomised controlled trials - Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
