I actually think Bernardo Faria is the marketing GOAT. He reeled in Danaher and so many Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and wrestling guys, it is absurd. Other than that, good run down from Craig.
The thing that's so crazy about Bernardo, is how quickly he just pivoted from being an absolute world class competitor, to becoming the face of BJJ instruction! People these days forget just how dominant Bernardo was. He could very easily of continued that, through to today. Someone on r/BJJ put together an ELO ranking list of BJJ competitors recently. And Bernardo is still in the top-10, despite not having actively competed for nearly 10 years!
I think the reason that Craig is great at marketing himself/Bteam is because he is so well spoken and funny. Literally anything thing he decides to do, people will want to watch him. I hope he continues to make content and/or commentate after he stops competing.
My biggest thing about Gordon is in his video interviews at roka he talks about his training partners as being rest rounds and not as good as others. Which just isnt how you should build up a team, even if its true. You dont put people down like that
The number record in BJJ is less prominent than boxing or MMA where it is a cornerstone of any fighters identity. B-Team could start highlighting athlete records in a new format, Billy Brajuji 62% or Billy Brajuji 4-21 (17) where the record is what % of bouts end in submission victory or flipping the format from W-L to L-W-of which were subs. The best 'format' for new BJJ records would probably be whichever statistic shows Gordon Ryan in the worst light.
I've always thought about that when Danaher Death Squad was coexisting within renzo gracie Manhattan. Seemed cliquey as opposed to a team which I'm sure doesn't feel great if you're on the outside
One thing to remember with John is that he has just improved Renzo’s game/teaching. Renzo taught Roger, the true GOAT. So John has more just taken on the lineage rather than changed BJJ
idk what kind of dogshit jj you're doing but anyone with more than ants in their head knows the game is always evolving. Past goats wouldn't even place finals in modern evolved jj.
Reminds me of Rorion Gracie, who, after Royce secured his first two UFC Championships was asked about an upcoming fight Ralph Gracie was scheduled for…he responded, "If he wins, he’s a Gracie, but if he loses, he’s just another family member from Brazil.”
Its just so shitty that its come to this. I know a couple of BJJ athletes who used to be friendly with DDS and are close with people from both sides. I cant imagine having to choose one side and sacrificing opportunities with the other...
Unfortunately it’s like that in a lot of towns with at least two “big” jiu jitsu schools. My gym goes through it with another local gym and it’s fucking stupid haha.
Craig has a serious point I can only name 2 people on new wave. But I could name alot on dds. Moreso I can name the majority of b team cause they were on dds or they have amazing character and chemistry with their team.
There's a garbage school in my local area. We'll have guys come train with us at an open mat or something and be like "whoa whoa, I can't be in the group picture" because if the psycho owner finds out, they can't be part of his inner circle (aka the only people allowed to spar) anymore. Genuinely embarrassing.
Happens around here too. We don't play like that but there's a Renzo gym and another few gyms that can't handle their guys coming over to cross train. Some cult shit
John has always talked about how controversy brings views, now his team splits in 2 and there's controversy with an unknown reason why. He is a genius truly
As someone who's been doing BJJ as long as John has (though not as well, obviously), you get to a point where you just tune-out the gym drama, ignore the who-hates-who and who's sleeping with what girl, and focus on yourself.
I swear I still think the entire split is a troll to drum up what we have today! The only real thing driving BJJ outside of practitioners is this crazy ass fued lol
I spent over 5 years living with hate from a past business partner who stole 400K+ from me and there was really nothing for me to do. I really feel that its so hard to move on. Craig seems to be in the boat where I was. My advice is to try hard to move on and leave it alone. The pain of being deceived will get better. My perspective of BJJ and Craig’s experience seems to be completely different. Good luck Craig because you are being consumed by negativity. Namaste 🙏
And this is why I always share my #1 complaint about jiu jitsu at every opportunity - the gym culture. Judo does it much better....you just don't see this gym vs. gym telenovela BS. People say if you turn jiu jitsu into an Olympic sport, it will water it down. Nonsense. Wrestlers seem to have no problem on the mats. If you want to solve this, make jiu jitsu an Olympic sport and creat a national amateur organization answerable to the athletic commissions. Standardize everything across the board and take the power away from those that are abusing it. I'd rather deal with corrupt IOC officials raking in money and not caring about promotions than every Tom, Dick, and Harry local gym owner with a God-complex that uses the belt system against their students to their own personal benefit.
Judo by far has way more pussys and gym drama. I think it’s great you haven’t seen it but when a competitive judo comes into a gym the old men and pussys who think they are black belts criticize and typically don’t like the younger competitors
And therein lies the problem with your solution. A decentralized system will always fare better than a tightly regulated and centralized one. It may be the wild west for bjj but it is growing faster than judo, in terms of technique and students, and is a more viable career since you can open up a gym to support yourself. People have the freedom to do their research and search out the best gym for them. No one is forcing them to stay at a bad gym.
@@0b3ryn29 I didn't see a problem you stated other than growth and money, nor did I see anything addressing my specific examples. Again, wrestlers are doing just fine. So are boxers and boxing gym owners....Mayweather seems to be doing just fine financially. Freddy Roach, too. "Research" doesn't really do anything. Lloyd Irvin's gyms had a great reputation. Cyborg is still going strong. Part of my USA Boxing coach cert? Mandatory background check and SafeSport training. You can't rid the world of shenanigans, but you can minimize it with a big flashlight. All I am basically saying: jiu jitsu's flashlight is too small. What am I missing?
@@n.a.g.5679 the problem is centralized control doesnt work long-term. Read some thomas sowell or milton friedman. What do you mean research doesnt do anything? Adults are responsible for their actions and should do the research before committing to a gym. How is bjj's issues not getting the coverage it deserves? Instances of sexual abuse is reported in instagram and bjj news channels. Bjj athletes speak out about it. It is the members who choose to remain with those gyms. Cant force them to leave. Cant force their closure. Its up to the law. Making a governing body wont help significantly. Just look at the sexual abuse scandal that plagued gymnastics. The institutions and the heads of those orgs helped cover them up. Look at ibjjf. It is a goveening body that isnt run well. Why create another one? Boxing is doing fine because gambling gives it a wider audience and top athletes are paid well. Wrestling is doing fine because it is heavily subsidized by school programs and orgs connected with the olympics. Bjj will never be a spectator.sport like boxing and is unlikely to become a school program because the general population sees it as too violent. More violent than boxing, even, coz of the subs.
@@0b3ryn29 lol bro be careful that you don't assume the political leanings or education level of the person you're replying to on YT.....I've probably forgotten more Thomas Sowell than you'll ever read (I love his work).....with the amount of grad level econ I've had to do - and my real-world job in the actual industry - I think I'm good on no longer needing economics lectures from the average jiu jitsu practitioner lol. Harping on about personal responsibility doesn't rid the world of personal irresponsibility, nor does blind ideology - only leading to hip-pocket advice - solve real-world problems. (I'm sure 1930s European Jews would've loved to tell the Nazis that they're just being irresponsible....problem solved, right?) I've given you ample real-world examples, none of which you've addressed. If "just do it, bro" is all you got, then you got a long comment thread ahead of you, my guy, because I'm just gonna keep bringing you right back to said examples. (EDIT: And on that note, related - quit with the "what do you mean....?" act lol. You can't 1) conveniently skip over everything else I say (and/or just assert stuff like "these sports are different because....."....not a spectator sport? We literally have streaming services lol....wrestling and judo are literally indistinguishable from BJJ to the untrained eye )..... then ask a dumb question, and expect me to take your opinion seriously lol. Don't be the "BJJ is a special snowflake" guy. MMA would say differently lol....and that's coming from someone who's closing in on seven years on the mats.)
Danaher has such a great mind can't believe his top student is one of the biggest steroid abusers in history it's crazy I wouldn't think John would be cool with that but I guess winning is all that matters
In a battle of humor (not wit) Craig owns everyone…but where is the humor in this video? Why complain about Danahers business tactics that are standard in the industry (not training at 2 comp gyms)? The new wave guys pretty much only talk publicly about the B team in regards to beating them in competition. To me this is fair. on the other hand, the B team seems obsessed with Danaher/Gordon and it’s crazy, because the B team guys are skilled enough and marketable enough to do their own thing and be successful
@@glennmahoney3911 isn't it legal to use PEDS? I thought it was common knowledge 99.9% of competitors are using including galvao, felipe, nicky, craig, etc.
You guys are stalking New Wave. Move on dude. Just go win championships and prove yourselves. Nobody believes JD isn't a great coach because he is. Sure, he crafts his image, he doesn't invent the techniques he teaches. Are you honestly picking that apart, Craig? They don't talk about B Team. How long are you going to live in reference to them? You have an interesting new model of comedy videos, jiu jitsu, and a training/hangout room. You should try to convince Eddie Cummings to come coach you guys. Nicky Ryan isn't going to be able to hold that spot firm.
No one said JD wasn’t a great coach. Gordon talks about B team everyday. Craig isn’t talking shit just saying what’s happening and the truth. New Wave is the best team doesn’t mean everything they do is perfect.
You also have to understand this is great for both teams as far as marketing. Which is what Craig’s really after. Shit talking rivalry between 2 of the best teams means lots of attention and a lot more money. Whether you like it or not it’s good for the sport.
Latching onto Gordon is the only thing B Team have, they don't win anything. Thing about Gordon he backs up what he says, the fact that they put up a video of one of their members getting his ACL popped kinda showed their true colours
Simple explanation, actions speak louder than words. No matter how articulate or witty someone is, if they get beat on the mats, the person that beat them owns a little piece of them. Gordon owns a little piece of Craig that can't be taken back with words.
They have a singular moment over you, sure, they "own" a few minutes of your time. But a piece of you? Def white belt mentality. I guess anyone who has ever had a second of success in practices over you "owns" you as well?
@@Abettergrappler I'm a purple belt. I'm talking strictly from a competitive perspective. If Craig didn't care, why does he spend so much time talking about Gordon? If someone runs their mouth, and they don't have any sort of hold over you, you ignore them. Answer me this. Is there nobody at your gym that you have very competitive rolls with? The skill level and weight are just about equal. Whenever they catch you or beat you, don't you have the desire to get them back next time? I'm not talking about malicious or vindictive motivation, just a competitive drive.
@@RJwarriorpoet He spends time talking about Gordon cuz the dude shit posts people all day and says some creepy shit about people's children having nice asses. If Gordon just trained and didn't say dumb shit then he wouldn't care. He's both marketing his personality and talking about relevant topics for profit. He's being smart. Second half is obvious. Source: I'm a black belt, if that matters.
@@Abettergrappler I mean that's what it boils down to. Craig is a great marketer and Gordon is the GOAT No Gi grappler. I don't even like Gordon's personality, but his skills are undeniable. I judge my training partners on their skill level. Their personalities are irrelevant on the mat. Off the mat it's a different story. I'm also a huge fan of Craig, but every time he talks about Gordon he seems butthurt.
@@RJwarriorpoet Don't see any butthurt from Craig but if there is it pales compared to Gordon. Which leads to more clicks. And he's right, he will outlive Gordon so what does being the goat matter of you're too miserable to enjoy it?
Although I agree with the idea New Wave cherry picks their talent now. it doesn't really matter, you guys named yourselves B Team because at the end of the day you're atleast 1 step behind. New Wave does a lot better job of scouting talent and developing talent.
