I'm going to a live stream this week to talk about the guitar tones. I did this video early in the week and I thought doing it live would be better.
Today we are talking about the internal compressor. It is quite cool!

Trying to summarize for myself: Threshold is the input level in dB where the compressor would engage, e.g. compressor off when below this level (or "threshold") and on above it. Ratio is the ratio of how much to compress the signal while the compressor is engaged. 4:1 would mean something like only allow a 1 dB increase for every 4 dB that the input level increases. Attack is the amount of time after the level is reached before the compressor engages. Release is the amount of time after the level falls below the threshold again before the compressor disengages. Gain is additional gain added to the signal after compression which can make up for the resulting reduction.

The only thing I don’t like about the internal compressor is that it doesn’t have a gain reduction meter. That would be useful. However it does train you to really listen to the signal to determine if you’re getting the sound you’re after.

Again your explanation of compression easy to understand... The fact I could hear the differences when you turned the dials. Excellent! I understand more from your tutorials than the others I've watched... Made easy the Threshold , Ratio, Attack & so on to absorb... Tanx Brother...

Love your vids! So I started using the effects and was able to get it for my vocals on my last song giving me that spooky black metal sound 👻( many thanks to you) One challenge I’m having though is this cos I want to also use this on my guitars. Track one I always use for my electronic drums, then two and three for rhythm guitars (I pan one left and one right) So you know how if you eq each track individually it holds that info if, and if you eq another track it holds that info, and if you switch back n forth it maintains it how you eq’d them individually right? Well on the effects, on track 2 of the first guitar I’ll play with the effects and get the reverb I want etc, and then I’ll think, oh well i want my drums to have some reverb as well, but when I switch to track one whatever I did on track two goes away and whatever I had set to track two is applied to track one. So in other words, how can I make the effects custom to each track, and make it stick? Ps thank you again for all your responses you’ve given me your videos have helped a bunch.

If you are using the INSERT EFFECTS button, it will only work on one channel. I'll make a video on how to do a workaround.

Hi. Thanks for your videos! I have a compression question about my dp32. I recorded my vocal with and found out I couldn't adjust compression after, now I'm recorded vocal without compression and I still can't hear the effect. I would appreciate some helpful advice. Thanks

That is one of the drawbacks with the DP24/32 and Model series of consoles by TASCAM. There isn't any track compression, only input compression. The only thing you can do it run the track through the effects look back into the input and re-record to another track to get the compression that you are looking for. I do this in the following video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-obKMD_qfv5c.html

I'm confused. Are you adding dynamic effects on track 6 and 7 and then recording that onto track 21/22?
@MikeFoerster
@MikeFoerster Год назад
I had to watch the video myself to remember what I did. So what I'm doing is playing tracks 6 and 7 through the external effects sends, the sends are coming back into the DP32 into inputs G and H, which have the compression turned on and G and H are assigned to tracks 21 and 22 which is where I am recording the new compressed sound from tracks 6 and 7. Hope that clears it up a bit better.

@I Love Recording thanks for the swift reply! Can you do the same thing with a bounce?
@MikeFoerster

No. It won't pick up the inputs

Here's a question, guru. I recorded a snapping track at 100 bpm with the roland tr8s, then recorded the guitar and bass. When i recorded another drum track, also 100 bpm (kick, snare, hats), it didn't stay synced. Any ideas why this would happen?
@MikeFoerster
@MikeFoerster Год назад
Yes, even though you are doing 100BPM on each device, they can still be slightly off from each other. This is why cameras use a timestamp system and midi guys use sequencers to keep everything on track.
@reardondearborn
@reardondearborn Год назад
@MikeFoerster so this could happen even if i was using the trs8 for both drum tracks?
@MikeFoerster
@MikeFoerster Год назад
@@reardondearborn It can.

Is this a deficiency in portastudio digital recording? Thanks for the quick replies
@MikeFoerster
@MikeFoerster Год назад
@@reardondearbornI don't think it is a deficiency of the portastudio, I think it is just the way electronics work. I have two cameras, both are by the same company but if I record with both of them, one will always end up going slightly faster than the other. It was part of the reason why I record everything into my computer and then edit the video from there. I know that those will be separate. If you have a way to set up a midi sync on a track and use it for what you are doing, that would help.

Are tracks 6 and 7 the only tracks being affected by the compressor?

@MikeFoerster
@MikeFoerster 2 года назад
@@edyebba3414 Ok. So I finally got a chance to re-watch my video. The compressor is on inputs G and H which are assigned to tracks 21/22. So if I were to record, tracks 21/22 would be compressed. Tracks 6 and 7 is where the guitar source is. I'm running them through the effects send and into inputs G and H where I can fiddle with the compression settings to show you. I hope this helps you out, I tried not to make it too confusing. I use re-amping techniques on the DP32 all the time for videos because it is easier to show the things it can do.

I tried to use the dynamics compressor on pre recorded tracks but was unsuccessful. I was told that it could only be used on the inputs.
