I also wash raw meats, chicken and beef when prepping for cooking. It is what my mom did. Fresh caught fish after cleaned I soak in milk for about 30 minutes before cooking. I enjoy your cooking videos Sonja and I have learned new ideas from you.
Same here! I always wash it and soak it in salt water to get rid of the blood. I know a lot of people might think that gets rid of the flavor, but it's the way I was taught and I think it's much healthier.
Absolutely with you!!! I’m ALWAYS rinsing my meat, chicken even fish. Shalom from Alaska ❤️❄️✡️🇺🇸 PS Cooking rice in the oven is my favorite now, been doing this since your earlier videos from Shabbat prep Thank you for the easiest & brightest ideas👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
From what I've read about washing meat is the main reason not to do it is that it increases the spread of salmonella from the water hitting the raw meat and spraying everywhere. Rinsing something with water doesn't kill bacteria anyways. The heat from cooking the meat is what kills the bacteria, so there is no need to wash it. But I know for a lot of people since this is what they were taught it's a hard habit to break. Just remember to spray down the entire sink area and the area surrounding it to kill any salmonella that may have gotten on the surfaces from the splattering water.
Always wash my chicken but make sure I have the pan I am going to put it in right there or a bowl if I am going to prepare it later. I am not Jewish but keep the Sabbath, and Holy Days, best way to put it is I am a spiritual Jew. I know in Lev 23 says they are God's feasts, not just for the Jews. Got a lot of ideas for meal prep for the Sabbath from your videos. Haven't tried cooking rice in the oven but I never have a problem with cooking on the stovetop. Thanks for sharing, your videos are great!
HI - firstly, I thought your kitchen was always neat :) Second, you cook for the week as though it's Shabbos, really impressive! And... it would take me much longer than 2 hours! Good for you and your energy!
Love your videos!! My grandma always washed raw meat and even soaked it in vinegar before cooking! Hence, I do the same! Or if I have citrus like lemons, I also use that after rinsing!
Love how organized you are, which is important for a busy, working mother. I clear the decks often because I too feel I accomplish more when I am not facing clutter. The Department of Agriculture in both the US and Canada, where I live, say you definitely should not wash your raw meat because you risk cross contamination. They say if you insist, you need to cover all the areas around the sink first and then sanitize immediately afterwards. They point out that the cooking process will get rid of any surface bacteria, which lurks on all the foods and/or packaging. I have done my rice in the oven with great success but my latest way is to do it on top of the stove like I would cook pasta (in a big pot of water) and I always have fluffy rice now no matter what kind. I wish I had been doing it this way for the past 65 years - oh well, better late than never.
Refresh the mess! Yes, to this! Just before the holidays (starting roughly in October), I did a DEEP cleaning in my entire home. Dusted ceiling fans, dusted our walls of cob webs, mopped thoroughly, vacuumed around the edges of the rooms with the pointy vacuum attachments, cleaned my blinds / windows and hung fresh curtains... you get my drift. I did the works to refresh my home. I spent a year recovering from a vulvectomy (I had vulvar cancer) and it felt so good being able to prep my home for the holidays. It's a great feeling, being able to move with ease. Please, never take this for granted. Blessings for all. May 2023 be one of good health and peace. Sonya, I love your channel. :)
I just had family over last night for dinner and my house looks just like this 😅 I watched your video to procrastinate and also to be inspired when I muster up the courage to tackle it! Thank you!
Yes, I wash the meat, chicken, before cooking it too. I can t imagine some are not doing it ! The most difficult chore for me is emptying the dishwasher! I hate that actually….
I always wash all my raw meats before cooking sometimes in white vinegar or lemon juice. I think about who had handled the chicken etc. Thanks for always sharing I love your videos.
Dear Sonya, thank you 🙏🏻 so much for this video which encouraged me to refresh the mess! Been very low this weekend but watching you get to it made me get to it too! Wiped down the kitchen, dishes put away, floor swept then did food prep. I’ve got lentils and veggies in spiced tomato sauce with cous cous, teriyaki chicken thighs and sweet chilli chicken thighs, potato wedges and salad for lunches to go with quiche I bought for 3 days this week all ready in the fridge. The teriyaki chicken will go with ready made egg fried rice and I’ll stir fry baby corn and mushrooms to add in; the sweet chilli chicken will be accompanied by the wedges and green beans. I can look forward to my week now feeling a bit more in control and with a sense of pride. Now I’m doing some pampering before tackling another load of washing up. You are a wonderful human being ❤️
I agree with you 100%, coming into a neat, tidy room calms me and I try to keep my house organized. I'm not obsessive about cleaning but it is important to me. Your new home is so beautiful and I love the decor. Thank you for sharing. Oops almost forgot "Refresh the mess"
I have worked decades in the food service industry both retail and production. Wash everything, trust me. And what you cannot wash, pray over. The places where food is prepared whether ready-to-eat, cooked to order or produced are not as clean as you may think and employees who handle your food aren't either. Trust and believe at major, well know, name brand restaurants, food production facilities, cafeterias, kitchens everywhere including diners and assisted living facilities;food isn't handled nor stored properly, isn't cooked nor kept at temperature, employees do NOT wash their hands thoroughly, if at all, and the areas are NOT clean.
Me too! Went to a friend’s years ago for Thanksgiving & she had cooked the Turkey without removing the giblet packets, so I know she didn’t clean it. 😫
Getting my life together. Lol. Need that coffee machine Wipes are very convenient I always clean my kitchen begone cooking. In the carribean they wash meat with lemon and lime Unorganized spaces = stress Refresh the mess
Washing meat is healthier. Using multiple stove tops and fully utilising space and doing multiple jobs at once saves more time. I meal preparation too. Saves me lots of time.
I don't wash my meat because you're gonna cook it anyway, plus it tends to spread bacteria around the sink. But I get feeling like you need to wash it.
Great reset....I wash all meats and veggies...even have a special way to cook ground beef to make sure no blood in meat. Excited for new year new videos. SHALOM ALEICHEM SONJA
My mom & grandmother taught me to cook....so I'm also a rinse meat first & measure by eye/hand camp of cooking...but understand those that say temp kills everything...just can't stop rinsing first
Yes, I wash my meat and poultry. My mom taught me to do it. She also taught me to break spaghetti when putting it into the boiling water. I know many chef's cringe, but it's how I was taught. So, I've become my mother. Not a bad thing.
Heart felt thank you! Please help us with prayers of your faith...........oh and your starter sour dough would be great too. I hope it gives you wonderful blessing that you are doing this. Even though you are already blessed I hope and would be happy to see you even more and more blessed. i am greetful to find this channel!!!!!!!!!!!
Refresh the mess 🧡 I get it! I get stir crazy with a mess… once the clutter has been negated, I can breathe again ☺️as far as washing meat, I usually at least pat it down if I don’t outright wash it
THANKS!!!! We appreciate SO MUCH to see real life. I'm tired of mamas saying on social media "my house is a mess" and show a couple toys on the floor.🙄 Moms of many kids know how it really is!!🙏💓
Hi sonya. Shavua tov Would you be able to make a video on how to reduce food wastage? So how you freeze, store, prep and bulk buy! Would be really helpful :)
Yes, I have always washed raw meat. One of my daughters has tried to get me to stop, but I continue to wash all meat then disinfect everything thoroughly. Good for you.😊
Like you I need a clean kitchen when I am getting ready to do some cooking projects. That clean slate gives me good motivation. I do not wash poultry or meat before using. I think that stems from where people were brought up. One less thing I need to clean as well. Lol.
I giggled a little when I sat down with my breakfast to watch . I was eating a fried egg sandwich also, but mine was not as fancy as yours-just egg and bread with Mayo on it. I always wash my chicken, not other meats so much. I make something similar to your deli roll. I use crescent rolls ( the kind that pops out of the can) fill with meat , braid and bake. Some of the meat fillings I use are taco meat; shredded chicken, Mayo and broccoli or celery; Philly cheesesteaks; sloppy Joe meat; etc. The filling choices are endless. Your home is lovely. Have a blessed week!
Happy Sunday Sonya! Your reset for the new year was refreshing! And yes, I always wash ANY meat before cooking with water vigorously then a lemon 🍋 rub. Have a great week with your family!
Hi Sonya! I am from Greece and I see every video you upload! I really admire you because you work you have your kids and you have time to do all these beautiful things! I send you a hug and I wait for your next video!
Some of your cooking and cleaning tips remind me of my dad's folks, who came from south central Russia ( the Volga region). I was also taught to wash raw meat with water, vinegar, or citrus juice before cooking it.
Your videos are so inspirational, Sonya. You maintain a beautiful, organized home. Your posting item suggestions for home maintenance on your Amazon page makes it so easy to purchase your wonderful finds. Thank you. ...and regarding the meat -- yes, I always wash the meat. I soak my chicken in salt water to draw out the blood. Soaking chicken breasts and thighs in salt water before breading them makes them so tender.
If soaking enough breasts for a family (I like to use boneless), I soak in a bowl in water and two teaspoons of salt in the refrigerator overnight. Before breading and baking, i place the breasts on paper towels and pat dry. the result is very tender. Adjust to your own liking.
Oh I was raised to clean as you go but if your going to cook in a kitchen before you get started you must have a clean kitchen and no dishes in the sink and always clean your meats as well as washing vegetables and fruits 🤓🤷 Thank you for your videos Shalom
Definite yes on washing food - it’s a personal preference, but if you are sanitizing the prep area after you cook it makes sense to me to just wash the raw food! I absolutely cannot work in a mess whether at home, my office desk, etc. - even my car. I was still a little sick watching this, Sonya, but your chicken soup inspired me to make some, too! All better now! Happy New Year Prep family!
I always wash not only my meat but all of my veggies and fruits ever since covid19. I used to just rinse it but once I started washing it I am going to continue. I can't believe how dirty the bottom of my sink is afterwards. I too must clean the kitchen before cooking. Now that my husband is retired he often makes sure the dishes are done for me when he's feeling well enough. Your house is beautiful. You must be so happy to have so much space now
I am so glad to see your house a mess. Mine is crazy now. Post holidays, kid with an early January birthday last night and lunar new year in three weeks followed by Valentine’s Day. It will be crazy.
I absolutely adore your videos, Sonya, and thank you for making them! Your prepping, cooking and holiday observance is really inspiring, and I'm happy to have learnt from you. Regarding the meat washing - I have never done this, and I have been told I should not, because of cross contamination risk. I've observed over time that it seems quite common in North America, almost a custom in many families?
There is bacterial growth on meats as they lay on the counters in supermarkets. I can’t bring myself to just dump it into foods. I feel that as long as it is washed mindfully it’s ok.
My rice cooker just recently broke, and I’ve been having such a hard time trying to cook rice in a pot. I’m definitely trying your method of cooking rice! Your house looks lovely ❤
Oh Sonja, I missed you today!!! I'm so sorry. The time just got away from me. But I will watch the video now! I want to let you know that I have now learned hot to make a 7-strand Challah! I am so impressed with myself!! 😂😂😂😂 Well on to watching the video. Have a very blessed day and week with your little family, Sonja. Tevorakh.
@@SonyasPrep Me too, look how long it took me just to do a 6-strand braid! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Love your channel, Sonja - I want you to hit 100K soon! SHAVUA TOV, and as always do,May HASHEM bless you and all your loved ones every day of your lives AMEN ve AMEN!!!💗🤗😘😍🥰💖
I agree about the kitchen. Mine is so small, that if I don't make space, I have no place to work! You've inspired me to get my holiday decorations away too. LoL
I wash all food before cooking. There’s no comment by the butcher that he dropped the meat on the floor and then packaged the food therefore I clean it thoroughly
Hi Sonya, you have beautiful bathrooms. Can you please make a video of the whole house sometime?... As for meat, I also always wash it in water before baking (mainly for hygiene reasons - salmonella, etc.) and then disinfect the sink. I usually make the broth by either boiling pieces of vegetables with meat and cutting everything after cooking (in a papin pot for about 30 minutes). Or I cut the vegetables, fry them in butter, then add the meat, add salt and spices, cover with water and cook. I usually add some pasta or rice before serving... Happy New Year 2023 to you and your family!🍀
I did some cleaning/decluttering recently and it made a huge difference in my overall well-being. I watch your videos, along with others, to stay motivated in my efforts to be more organized.
Sonya I love your videos.. your food prep is so simple and maybe I can do it lol . I got it said this cleaning video motivates me 😊 Thank you for sharing
Refresh the mess! Tomorrow I need to tackle taking down the Christmas decorations. I'm very inspired after watching your video. I LOVE Native deodorant, the lavender scent is my favorite.
