It's Day 2 of our Fish Room Makeover series, and it looks like a tornado has been through the building. Cory and Mike of ‪@AQUAPROS‬ have at least another 8-10 hours of work ahead of them, as they try to install an underwater "waterfall," change out the sand substrate, and sneak into the Aquarium Co-Op store and warehouse late at night to get some much needed supplies. As a born cynic and a generally pessimistic person I'm grateful for Cory expressing his doubts and despairing moments. It's too rare that we get to see them on youtube so thanks for the representation.

Agreed. Although I'd like to think I'm ever the optimist, living life long enough will make anyone a cynic and RU-vid and social media in general is "everything is GREAT!" Which we all know is definitely very far from the truth. Some honesty is always good, even if it's not always positive.

The one tank with the sandy bottom but yet was still unexpectedly clear also had more of those grasslike plants growing in it than the other sanded tanks. I think those grasslike plants had an extensive tight network of roots underneath the sand that held the sand together and prevented little sand particles from floating into the water, "dirtying" it.

Maybe try an underground filter in the tank like the old days with just a tube sticking out of the substrate an inch to help with the cloudy water. Just a thought.

I used to have one those sandfalls things and I noticed that it works better if you pre-soak the sand. Yes, eventually all the sand does fall off but since my aquarium had a top layer of sand, I'd literally just scoop up some sand from beside it and toss it in and it took a few months to run out as well

Hopefully you don't have fish with chinchilla tendencies that would fling the sand from the pit every chance they get.

We have also done a 300% water change on problem tanks. Never been a fan of sand more than likely the problem is stemming from that but not the only reason seeing how your other tanks are doing well.

I love the amount of room in the store. there are too many fish stores that are just so packed that you cant walk past people or see what's on the bottom racks. also I wish more stores would show their quarantine room/have a quarantine room

Looking good, I just rescaped my tank and helped reignite the love for the hobby. After numerous years its easy to lose some love for the hobby. Something about new scape, fish,substrate seiryu stone and cool drift wood reignited my love again. Happy every time I walk by now vs thinking about maintenance and dreading it. Love these videos, reminds me of the daily dose videos, and I've seen every, yes every one over the years 😂

I was planning on breaking down most of my tanks this weekend after a couple of big setbacks and general meh. Watching this video has re-ignited my excitement, so I'm going to re-do rather than remove those tanks. Thanks for sharing!

I like the small round rocks as substrate. They are small enough and smooth enough for my corydoras.

This is why military people have a difficult time adjusting, you can't get that kind of cohesion outside of the military and it is stressful to keep trying to seek it out and be discouraged when it doesn't pan out.

5:14 It acts like the air-lift that treasure hunting divers use to clear out the sand, but are using only water instead of the easier to use air system (using air means not having to use hydrolic pumps). You could do the same with air, but would have to split out the air and have it travel out of view for aesthetics. You could also tilt the waterfall backwards slightly to allow more gravity/contact time to collect the sand in the reservoir and also be observant of where your other tank water flows so it doesn't contribute to the snowdrifing of the sand.

Did you rinse the sand before adding it? Its the fine powder of the sand. It takes a few waterchanges/gravelvaccs to get that powder put. Once you have it out it will be really clear

Yes, the sand has been in the tank for nearly 2 years, lots of 100% water changes and gravel vacs.

Years ago in when I work in a local tropical fish store when we get a cloudy tank we get out a diatomaceous filter and run it for a couple of days and the clarity would be unbelievable. We today say a water change I say filter first then change the water. Things that cloud water is so fine it can filter out all the particles. I found a diatomaceous filters is that tool to have especially if you are a large multi tank keeper of fish. I am surprised you don't have one all ready.

2:30 Tripping is bad. I tripped yesterday with a cup of adult brine shrimp in my hand and lost 1/4 cup to my hand/arm/floor. I felt the creepy crawling of the brine shrimp wiggling on my arm and now have the aroma of spilled shrimp until I can spill something else to cover the smell. 🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐

I prefer sand, run Aquarium Co-op sponges in all my tanks. I combat the cloudiness with internal filter filled with quilt batting along with API ACCU Clear, remove filter the next day.

I am a little confused. Patience is frequently recommended when dealing with aquarium issues. So, when some tanks are clear and others (with sand substrate) are pretty good but not totally clear, why are you wanting to immediately do something? Why not let it have time to settle down? Second, in your tour of the retail site, I got the impression you are no longer associated with it. What is your involvement with the company now?

I wouldn't say immediately. The tank has been cloudy for 2 years? I've been trying to fix it for those 2 years without success. As for involvement. I own the company. A few videos ago you see me building the expansion. What is shown in videos and what happens daily isn't the same. 10 years ago, I was at the retail store open to close every day. Now I don't work in the retail store. I show up to help build, do walk throughs etc. But I am more busy with content, product R&D, running the online store, expanding RPP and more.

Am I not remembering correctly or did Corey always say that the flag Tails were too big a fish even for the 800 gallon at full grown. Maybe I miss remembering.

I don't believe they get too big for the 800g. The problem with my last one is it would "mouth" my mbu puffer and it spooked Hank. Also I have the 1500 gallon now, to upgrade the flagtail if needed.

i would rather put a uv sterilizer on a hospital tank, and/or only use one on a main when needed, not worth the cost of added electrical, cleaning and maintenance really

I've bought several waterfall systems from different companies. Not worth it imo but the fish i own enjoy it as cave dwelling at least 😅 But stay away from those underwater waterfalls systems You have been warned Save your money Save your time
